  1. What makes you think that Skyhook is an exception ? "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  2. You are right Terry and I was wrong. I knew that 2 seconds delay after cutaway is allowed, but I was not aware that you can add those seconds to the total time when using RSL. "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  3. 4.3.6 Functional Test (Normal Pack All Types): For all 4.3.6 tests the maximum allowable opening time for parachute canopies with a maximum operating weight of 250 lb (113.4 kg) or less, is 3 s from the moment of pack opening. 4. watch this video and you will change your mind again !!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_MsYQ3GtAg&feature=related "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  5. Fact is they are not... And how are they supposed to learn about it if no one mentions it? The first thing they have to do is read and understand the manuals. Unfortunately 99 % of the jumpers are way too lazy to do that. I know a guy who can tell you 20 ways to mount a GoPro, but he didn't know that a square reserve is packed in a freebag "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  6. Declare the real value of the rig and have it shipped with UPS/DHL. When they see a "backpack" declared for more than 5K, they will be extremely happy to get their 20 % VAT + 3 to 5 % import taxes ASAP. 7. D-6/4 RS-8, RS-9, RS-10, UP-9M ( but they have sleeves instead of D-bags) "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  8. This is the key....12000 lbs divided by 4 risers gives 3000 lbs per Slink. 3000 divided by 75 is only 40 lbs or about 18 kg at 75 G's It's useless to argue about how much G's you can put on them since the human body in a harness will take no more than 20 before body parts start flying around. Only Chuck Norris can take 75 G's, but he doesn't need a parachute at first "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  9. I'm not going to comment the student's actions , but that rig need some really close look from a rigger. ~ 2 seconds delay from pulling the ripcord to the PC launch is a problem! "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  10. Which rubber bands you have used for the test? Mil Spec. will break at no more than 40 lbs every time ,but once I've tested rubber bands that stayed in one piece even after my fish scale ( 55 lbs) made a full circle "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  11. My best guess will be because the designers want their "babies" to look cool. By using stiffeners they reduce the tension from one point ( the grommet) to the whole flap, making it less likely to wrinkle . The down side from this is that if a line half hitches the flap, you are in really deep st. John should correct me if I'm wrong, but the only "stiffener" used in Racer is Type 4 square weave. But I guess that the purpose is to give a little bit more flesh so the container fabric is not going to be pulled from the grommet. I asked myself the same question when I had to replace 6 broken stiffeners in one rig "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  12. Don't roll the lines ( risers ) under the reserve container. You might end up with some nasty burn marks on the container . It will be an expensive repair. "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  13. I need a material you can see trough and it will not get damaged from the hoot knife. I saw some kind of folio in the local store, but it was expensive and they couldn't tell if it's heat resistant. Any ideas? "S-links" are routed twice , but "Wrap it" links must be routed 3 times. If you think that the "Slinks"are stronger, I'm sure that Mr. George Galloway will disagree with you Blue skies "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen

[reply Approved for Precision's Reserve ONLY & for Precision's Main canopies. Hi Shlomo, Are you sure that "Wrap it" links are approved for reserve different than "R-Max" ? Blue skies "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen

What makes PD Slinks better than this "Wrap-it" link? If you don't tack PD "Slink", you might end up with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sAr8PiJiVI "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  17. But the question is : "If it's approved by the FAA, but not from the manufacturer, is it ILLEGAL" Blue skies "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  18. The down side of the articulated harness is that if you don't tighten your chest strap (legstraps as well) , the whole harness can shift quite a lot and in case of a spinning mal, you might not find your handles on the place you expect them to be. That's why is really important to have a harness that fit good. "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  19. Step 1: Take all body measurements according to the manufacturer of the rig you are looking at. Step 2: Send them to the manufacturer together with the serial # of the rig. Step 3: Wait for an answer . Step 4: Buy a beer for your first rig "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  20. It's not only about the body size. I think that every manufacturer can make you a small rig, if you have small canopies to put in. With that said, I'm 5'5" and my Mirage G4 mxs1/2 is only 16 inches long. I know that the Power Racer is 15 inches long and only 9 inches wide. And that's SMALL Finding the right rig for you can be pain in the ass "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  21. I haven't seen yet a Skyhook saving somebodies life. Have you?! And that means chop, Skyhook worked as a MARD = < 5 seconds canopy ride. Why 5 seconds?! Because the difference between MARD and RSL is 100 ft which is about 5 seconds under open reserve. ( I expect somebody to point out the canopy collision incident from a few years back where the jumper with the Skyhook survived and the one with the RSL died. But until this moment nobody said that they chopped at the same altitude,. So I can't take this as a example) Me too. I'd like to hear how 120sq. ft canopy produced less drag than a meshless PC with 7 inch hole. Maybe is something new I'm not aware of, so I'd like to know. Unlike some people, I'm willing to learn. The truth is that we don't know why Skyhook disconnects. The funny thing is that even Mr. Booth doesn't know why. What we know so far is that it disconnects more often than the company will ever admit. And about the "jealousy" comment from the user under....C'mon dude. Do you really believe that I'm jealous? 22. Hi Chuck, Let me explain better. What we see on these videos are not skyhook deployments. We see normal RSL deployments on Skyhook equipped rigs. Or if I have to say it otherwise , we see Skyhook failing to do it's job. Now, If I have to be honest I'm not really surprised by the Skyhook failures. We know that they happen quite often. What I'm surprised is that those guys paid 250 $ for a safety system, had a failure on that system and didn't even noticed it . Not only that, but assuming that they had the system performing its best, they've made a comment how great the system was. The Skyhook failures are about 10 %. But those 10 % are estimate on situations where the jumper saw it fail. I'm wondering now based on the videos if this percentage isn't much higher. Or even if I'm wrong, even if those 10 % failures are only in my head and the real percentage is let say 5 % (because I don't believe the factory .2 % estimation ) , the question remain. "How is possible to have a safety system with such a high malfunction ratio, and people still go crazy about it ?" The power of marketing! That's how "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
