  1. I've had DirecTV for about 5 years now and I actually really like the service. I use it to watch TV (I have an Ipod or can listen to the radio for music) and as for the stations and broadcasting getting stale... one can't really blame the distributer of the channels for the lack of quality... I am a bit disappointed that DirecTV lost the ability to distribute the VS-HD channel as it has the Tour de France on it... however I will say they do have a large selection of HD channels. I am conserned about relocating however... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  2. Personally I think there isn't/shouldn't be any difference between a Go Pro camera versus any other camera that one might take on a skydive. whether they believe it or not it has been shown that even people with much more experience that putting a camera on their head (no matter what kind) is a distraction. The problems of camera flying aren't merely associated with the additional weight on your head, additional snag hazards on the helment, but are more due to the additional distraction of having a camera... even if one claims they aren't going to pay attention to the camera... it will cause a distraction... and DiverMike Sorry I didn't get to talk to you on safety day (there were soooo many people there)... hopefully I get a chance to see you sometime this spring/summer. 3. Yep... Norman Kent met my wife and I a last summer... that was pretty cool too... http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2470820&op=7&o=global&view=global&subj=1069783587&id=601038197 I don't mean to say anything bad about either Jay or Norman... they're both great skydivers and tremendous ambassadors for our sport. and frankly I hope that I'll get the chance to jump with Norman Kent again.
  4. I never said I didn't find or have peace in the air... just that I was usually occupied in the air... I don't mind being occupied... in fact I quite enjoy it... I would rather be busy then not (in general)... I don't generally very much enjoy just sitting around doing nothing on the ground... why should it be any different in the air... I find enjoyment and peace in analysis and such... having said that sometimes it is nice to get out... pull high and enjoy a skydive... or leave the GPS at home on a bike ride or run... and just go get lost and not analize every little thing... but just because one persons idea of a peaceful skydive is one thing... it doesn't mean it's the same for everyone... 5. That sounds downright boring... and quite cold this time of year to boot... which doesn't sound at all relaxing... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  6. I'm obviously doing something wrong then... I'm usually thinking about things during most of my skydives... making sure I'm in the right place to get the shot... that the sun is where I want it to be (relative to me)... listening/observing for signs that it's time to break off... any number of things are going through my head throughout the skydive... There is often a moment when I first leave the step that is relaxing... but alas if I let it last too long I might lose my subject... of course I enjoy what I do in skydiving... but it is by no means peaceful... in the direct sense that you're speaking of... I suppose in another 1000 or so jumps it might become second nature and the peacefulness will return but until then I'm going to enjoy the activity I have when I skydive... 7. FWIW: I'm not going to have time to enter... my issue with issue/consern with the no compositing is that things like focus stacking/HDR are viable tools in the digital world to create pictures... Focus stacking for example is not just an image editing technique it's a creative tool that is comonly employed in macrophotography... I guess I just don't understand the need for imposing the limitation of no compositing... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  8. OOO a game!!! I like games... I think Breakoff.jpg and 4-way.jpg were shot with the 10-22 whereas meeker.jpg and tandem_exit.jpg were shot with the kit lens... I'm probably wrong but that would be my guess if I had to guess... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  9. I figured that is what he meant as well and it would be nice to get some clarification... not allowing something like focus stacking, HDR, etc does... shall we say... limit a few avenues of creativity... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  10. That's a bit of a stretch. Kennedy was in the Army, too. As for retired career military, as Matt is, Murtha was retired career military, too (albeit Marines). I guess Matt has just never struck me as overly political and turning his comment into something that didn't seem appropiate of his personality seemed wrong somehow... (and from his response to Kallend I'm not proven wrong...) Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  11. is that anything like that old style long underwear with the buttons in the back so that one can expose their rear without removing their pants? Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  12. Can't say that I noticed your righteous lecture to the right wingers when they were trashing Kennedy and Murtha. Just sayin'. Does that make his comment less applicable in those cases? Because from my interpretation of his comment is just as applicable to any other thread... perhaps he has chosen to make the post in this thread on the basis that he feels more of a connection/kinship with Haig then he did with Sen Kennedy or Rep Murtha since Haig was in the Army... His motivitations may not be political in nature... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  13. Yes, my parents know... I first told my mom about it the day that I did my first jump (an AFF Level 1) when she called me about something unrelated shortly after landing. I spoke to them additionally when my parents came to visit me a few weeks later and discovered that my dad had once gone up with some friends many years before for an observer ride while they jumped out... a few years ago when my parents were out at the dz for an afternoon... I bought him an observer ride and he watched me and my then girlfriend (now wife) jump... which he enjoyed it... I gave him one of my cameras and he took a couple of pictures of us getting out of the plane... alas... the most annoying thing (sometimes although other times it's awesome) is that the Rents spend their winters in Casa Grande, AZ and regularly call during the winter (while I'm stuck in Ohio) to tell me about going out to Eloy to watch skydiving... but it is nice because it means my wife and I can go visit them and run off to the dz for some fun ourselves occasionally... 14. The problem lies in that the historical note doesn't support the arguement that Gen Haig was promoted over more qualified officers just that he was promoted over more senior officers... Unless someone is in a Union... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  15. Uh, you wrote that he was promoted to 4 star status over qualified candidates. That's as clear an attack as it gets. (and in typical fashion for you, not supported by any facts) Historical note: http://www.startribune.com/templates/fdcp?1266862722583 I have no real stake in this but... just because the other senior officers had greater seniority it doesn't mean he wasn't just as qualified as them to hold the position he was placed into... at the GO level very often the Position and the Rank go hand in hand... Gen Haig could have been easily just as qualified or more qualified for the position as the other 2/3 star Generals that were more "senior" then him... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  16. I certainly hope I don't fit into that category... Edited to add: I realize this wasn't 6 years ago... but Those passes to the P-51 Fly-in outside of Columbus were Awesome... and actually meeting you was pretty cool too... Scott Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...

    Rubik's Cube

I usually have one or two lying around the house... I also have one sitting on my desk in my office... They're usually solved in my house becaue when I see an unsolved Cube I have an uncontrolable urge to solve it... I learned how to do it when I was a freshman in High School on a night when I was sitting at home bored... I actually modified a cube in college to make it possible for me to do it blindfolded... (without ever seeing the cube I added raised stickers to each side which allowed me to solve it by touch...) Alas... I do admit to being a complete dork... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  18. True it isn't something YOU would volunteer for... but that doesn't mean someone else wouldn't consider it... besides I have a great deal of respect for most of the NCO's I've come across (they're not a common sight in my carreer field) so loss of respect isn't necessarily a given... having said that... becoming an NCO/enlisted wouldn't be something I'd be interested in myself either... but that doesn't mean I'm so closed minded to think that it isn't a viable choice for others... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  19. I was kind of figuring you were interested in a zoom telephoto that can also be used as a macro lens... unfortunately as Saskia said you really don't get a true macro with your typical zoom telephoto as the "enlargement" capabilities are limited to less then 1 to 1. One of the more popular lens choices for a zoom telephoto is the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L with or w/o IS. It does have "macro" capabilities but it is limited (and I'm not sure what the maximum magnificaiton is...) Technically speaking most dedicated macro lenses can be used as capable fixed focal length telephoto lenses. (Canon's MP-E 65mm f2.8 1-5x Macro is an example of an exception) A great resource for all things Canon is the Photography on the net forum: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ I lurk there and have posted occasionally... under the same monkier I post under here... 20. You work for them. no offense meant to the original poster but this would be my opinion as well... or you are at the very least are sponsored by them... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  21. So whos to say this individual didn't seperate from active service then enlist in the army reserves as an enlisted member... it's probably not common but it's not impossible. and to be honest... I think the "mistaken" rank problem occurs far less often then you might think... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  22. As others have suggested the Canon 100mm Macro is a great lens. A cheaper alternative that is the Tamron 90mm Macro lens... and still produces a great photo... I have the later lens and I like it... however if I was to do it again... I would probably consider the Canon only because it mates with the Canon's Twin light more easily then the Tamron does... Snow

It's been pretty heavy here in south/central OH as well... Beth's drive to work has been scary... as she is often out before the plows and other drivers have had a chance to get the roads cleaned... Yesterday morning was particularly bad... her company also implied that they were still required to show up to work even if it required them to pass through/drive in a level 3 snow emergency area or similar... which is really a poor company policy... 25. I haven't watched the game in about 4 years... so I would say I don't particularly care much about it either... I don't have nearly as much animosity as you do about it however... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
