  1. Does anybody know the make of the tandem rig? I'm not saying that this is a good idea, but one should find out who the manufacturer is before accusing someone of violating the manufacturer's rules and calling for revocation of their rating. The jumpers are European and the jump did not take place in the US... perhaps they didn't do anything against the rules. Again, I'm NOT saying that this is a good idea Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  2. ^ I know! That type of car didn't sell all that well 15 years ago because nobody cared very much about fuel economy when gas cost $1 a gallon. As a result it seems like cars have just gotten heavier, less efficient, more complex and a lot less durable than they could be. You just can't buy a car that's light, simple, durable, efficient and affordable anymore. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  3. The EPA tests are done in a lab and then the numbers they come up with are reduced by 10-22% to make up for the gap between lab conditions and what actually happens out on the road. The driver has much more to do with fuel economy than any other factor. My personal best tank average is 29mpg for my 1997 Jeep Cherokee and 79mpg for my 2000 Honda Insight. My fiance and I bought the Insight a few years ago & there was a definite learning curve to get the car to match the EPA's 49 city/ 61 hwy rating. Once you've got a few thousand miles under your belt, you can easily exceed these numbers by a significant margin, especially if the conditions are right. On a flat road in the heat of the summer with a moderate tailwind I've been able to sustain 80-100mpg at about 58-65mph. The only hybrid car that has been built for no-compromise fuel economy was the first generation Insight. It was the first hybrid car to hit the market & for some reason nobody has even come close in performance in the 10 years since it was introduced. It boasts a 60hp 1.0L three cylinder, aluminum frame and body, had the lowest drag coefficient of any production car, and weighs 1850lb (10 years later the current model Insight weighs 900lb more... WTF?). Even at a superlight 1850lb, it's still a very well built car. We've been lucky enough to avoid most really costly maintenance and we're about to turn over 250K miles. I don't understand why car companies are now trying to sell everybody on bloated four door hybrids that are lucky to get 40mpg. Back in the mid 90's Honda made the Civic VX two door hatch with four seats & it was capable of breaking 50mpg without being a hybrid. What the hell happened? Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  4. ^Right, but collisions between aircraft and balloons are extremely uncommon because you'd have to be blind to run into a balloon. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  5. That is very unlikely a pilot rig as there seems to be a smoldering airplane attached to it. It is most likely a Whole Airframe Parachute system attached to a Cirrus. Cirrus' are fast airplanes that are marketed towards new pilots. If any individual was wearing a bailout rig, it would likely be the pilot of the glider, who was able to release the tow line, avoid the collision and land normally. An aircraft towing a glider has right of way over everything else as they are not very fast or maneuverable. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  6. This morning the forecast was looking good, but now it 's calling for 22 gusting 26 for Sat & I'm assuming the meet is going to get pushed to sunday. So far the Sunday forecast is calling for good winds. I was going to carpool down the Dave Jennings, but it looks like he won't be able to make it down for a sunday comp. Does anybody else from the NC area want to share a ride? Raefordites? If I don't make it down to the meet, safe swoops everybody! Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  7. You tell 'em! Every blue-blooded American knows that this will only show the people of Tampa that the Prez is weak and willing to bend over to their every demand! The previous administration reserved this kind of ass kissing only for Princes of certain oil rich nations in which the US has great financial interest. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.

  9. Matt, What you want is an RV. Trust me. I bought an RV-4 because I wanted a two seater that was fun/nimble, aerobatic, efficient & well proven. My RV has 150hp Lycoming from a C-172 & it can out climb most jump planes and cruise at 180+mph at 7gph. It's all aluminum & good to +6 -4 G, so it's good for most sport acro maneuvers. It's a VERY responsive and fun airplane to fly as you're sitting right on the longitudinal and lateral axes, plus the visibility out of the canopy is excellent. A RV-4 isn't the best choice for IFR because of limited panel space and a pretty tight cockpit (especially for somebody your size). RV-6, -7, -9'es with side by side seating make much better IFR platforms, but you lose the centerline seating. There are almost 7000 RV's flying now (roughly one sixth of all registered experimental aircraft) and there is a very active worldwide RV community. VansAirforce.com is home of the RV forums where you can turn for info and advice from other RV builders and pilots. Every question that I've ever had has been answered immediately by searching the forums. Next time you're in Raleigh, let me know! You might maaaaaybe just barely fit in the back of my -4, as long as you weight less than 180 we'll be within CG too! If not, I know somebody with an -8 that you'd fit in. 10. What are the rules for camping out? I have some friends coming down from NY who are wondering if they can stay at the airport & I'm sure there are lots of others here on DZ.com who would like to know so that they can plan accordingly. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  11. I have about 1500ish jumps on an all ZP JVX-80 & I'm a big fan of it as an everyday/work canopy. It floats very well in brakes or risers coming back from a long spot (compared to my Velo 75) and the openings are very good. Now that the sail material has been on the market for a few years, how is it holding up? I'd really like to fly one to feel the difference, but I don't know if I could justify the extra cost and the pain in the ass packing when on a short call. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  12. I made my first trip to SVNH last week to do some freeflying & I was very impressed with the place. The facilities are squeaky clean, the owners and staff are super cool, the prices are competitive, and most importantly the airflow is super strong! Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  13. Quick question for the DeLand/ Orlando crew... Are any of you good people heading back after the comp on Saturday or early in the day on Sunday who'd have room for one more in the carpool? I'll try to keep my rig dry so that your car doesn't end up smelling like pond water Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  14. I'm down for a flock after the FLCPA meet at The Farm I haven't gotten a chance to do any flocking on the Velo yet. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  15. That's the thing about skydiving in this day and age... If you're moderately athletic you can be that good! All it takes is $600-$1000/hour and a good coach. The real trick is finding a way to have that kind of expendable income. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  16. Nothing that they're doing is too terribly advanced. Aside from the basic head down stuff, all of that can be learned in just a few hours with a good coach... or a few hundred skyjumps. That video is really old & the Tinuccis have gotten way better since. Here is a more recent video of some top notch tunnel flying. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.

    Tunnel in nj?

Well, it's good to know that they haven't completely scrapped the project. I'd think that in the current economic climate, the NYC area would be one of the safest places to put a tunnel. In case anybody's interested, here's the website for the sports complex that this thing is supposed to be a part of. CLICKY Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.

    Tunnel in nj?

The last post in this thread was 3.5 years ago. Is there any new news about the NJ tunnel? Skyventure still lists the project in their "Districts Reserved" section. According to their website, Xanadu is slated to open this summer. Does anybody know the status of the project? It seems like a tunnel in the NYC area would thrive. 20. Only if you're a complete tool. The vast majority of BASE jumpers don't want the whuffo population to have any idea who they are. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  21. Disclaimer: I am in no way sponsored by or associated with PD or the PD Team other than being one of the 15 candidates who was chosen for the X-Project. This is my opinion... This couldn't be further from the truth. If PD wanted to create tension and a sense of competition between the candidates to create a "unique extreme reality show", they easily could have. The "true reality of the event" was absent of competitive scheming, alliances, backstabbing or whatever drama you might be imagining. I walked away, having not been selected for the team, with no negative feelings and heaps of respect for all who were involved. In actuality, the PD guys were out to get to the core of all of the candidates, away from the DZ environment that we're used to, and decide who would be the best fit for the future of the PD Team. Expressing the depth of that part of the process on video is all but impossible. That being said, I think that Ian's article was a very accurate and uncensored account of the events that took place & I'm awfully glad that I was lucky enough to be a part of it all. Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  22. Thanks for a very well written summary of the event through your eyes Ian! All of the candidates had some really amazing stories about their lives, skydiving careers, and what it would mean to them to make it on to the team. I think that Harry and Alex did an awesome job of capturing it all and editing such a huge amount of raw footage together into a short YouTube-able piece... especially considering the time constraint that they were under to get them posted to the PD Blog. I'm not sure how the general public would receive a "reality show" about something like the X-Project, but it certainly would be nice to see Canopy Piloting get some more positive exposure in the mainstream media. 23. I'll be missing the first comp too But I'll be thinking about you guys while I'm up in Chicago. How many meets do you have to go to in order to place in the season points? Happy Swooping! Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  24. ^Not too shabby! I'll be up there setting up the swoop course tomorrow! Egad, A BASE life defiles a bad age.
  25. Just a reminder... If you want to have boogie shirts or other merch before the boogie, you need to order it soon!
