  1. As tought by every instructor I know in the UK on a FJC for a two out situation: ALWAYS use GENTLE input or NONE AT ALL. Dont flare for landing and plf. For biplane (ie. one canopy infront of another) steer with the front canopy. For side-by-side: stear with the main AWAY from the reserve. This prevents people with little/no experience overdoing the turn and entangling the two. If you steer away the worst you can do is induce a downplane. There is a rule in the UK that student Kit must use different coloured main and reserve toggles, usually yellow and red respectivly so students know which is which. Downplane: chop the main. Never chop the main unless in a downplane. I have never seen a two out. The two Ive heard of at my DZ were two experienced jumpers who lost altitude awareness and their cypres's fired as they deployed their mains. Just make sure you keep altitude aware, handles and pads covered in the aircraft and check them after deployment. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  2. There was a similar incident in the UK a couple of months ago. Cessna 185 took off and the wheel actually broke off on takeoff. Pilot climbed to 9k I think, jumpers got out, the pilot flew around a bit to lose fuel before flying to a nearby airport because they have a longer runway. Pilot managed to land safely and no one was hurt. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  3. I know there are base jumping courses in europe. They wont take you unless you have at least 150 skydives, sometimes more. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  4. Id say my DZ is pretty friendly (Peterlee) and pretty good at accepting RAPS students from any DZs. We had a guy who'd done a few S/L in Canada and on to DPs, and he just continued. But DONT come here if you're part way through AFF. Im sure my DZO would be annoyed if he read this, but because it is hard for him to get AFFIs he charges an "AFF membership" for a start of £100 if you didnt train with him. For part way through AFF Id go to Hibaldstow. They've been fine with everyone I know thats been there, especially during the week. AFAIK they've just let students do a check out jump and then continue from wherever they were at, without any joining fees, just the cost price of that normal jump. Just make sure you ring in advance to make sure theres going to be people and/or a pilot there. My friends have turned up after a 2 hr drive only to find they couldnt get a pilot in. 5. I think, if you're unconcious you'd do less damage than if you were concious and unable to do anything, with maybe the exception of doing a good PLF. When unconcious, your whole body goes flaccid. When concious you'll tense up your muscles pre-impact, which makes you more liable to break something. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  6. This is definatly the cheapest DZ in the UK for everyone. If your team trains there enough your jumps can go down to as little as £14/jump from 15000 every time. Very well organised and never any waiting time. CCI and instructors always willing to talk to you, no matter what level you're at. The 15000 makes it great for any students there, plenty of practice time in the air. They are welcoming of students from any DZ that have done at least 1 jump previously, with with BOC or ROL deployment. Excellent lift capacity with the 10 place Finnist running during the week with a 15 place dornier if it gets busy enough, with both running at weekends. The minimum load is 4, which makes for some speedy and roomy climbs to 15000 :) The only problem I have heard of is during the week, phone up in advance to make sure others are going to be there, or turn up with 4 people and pre warn them. 2 of my friends went here once and there was no pilot.
  7. This afaik, is not the case. The advanced packer and rigger at my DZ would be happy to seal it, but they dont do it unless asked. MY rigger said she doesnt see the point in sealing, because in the event of getting your reserve out, and theres a problem, its most likely you'll lose the seal and then be unable to prove it was sealed in the first place. 8. My friend said he saw one at an airshow stationary flying into a 30knt wind!!! UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  9. Ive been at my DZ 3 years, the bar man has been there 15. He can remember someone's wallet being taken from a bag once, and they reconed it was some local whuffos. We're even next door (ie, 10s walk) to a village/town/industrial estate. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  10. I dont mind straddle benches, unless Im at the back of them in Hib's G92's. Because they climb so quick (15k in about 12 mins with 15 people, even quicker with 8 on board ) they are quite steep, so everyone is trying to slide down them. It really hurts your legs having half your arse on a bench while trying to stop 5 people sliding you off. Hurts. The Turbolet we had 2 years ago had 1 seat behind the pilot, about 6 on the floor and rest on a side bench. If it was going with 12 or less, you could sit "downhill" on the bench. But now we got an 18 place nomad that they'll only put 14 in. Its roomy with 18, so 14 is even better. :) UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  11. I dont really think these come under malfunctions, more incidents. And about getting away with sloppy pack jobs: Why are the sloppiest always the more confortable too? UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  12. Personally: 0-50 - Manta/PD 280s (took me this long to get my A) (.75 loading) 50-80 - fury or contact 220 (.95 loading) couldnt land on my feet. Canopies are about 15-20 yrs old. 80-280(now) - sabre 170 (about 1.2) Really enjoying and only just learning. Playing with double front riser landings, can flare turn. Only just beginning to know what to do with it. Not downsizing anytime soon. I have jumped friends sabre 2 150s and a zp.exe 155 (about 1.35) a few times. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  13. Nothing damaged yet. Had some crappy landings, and entaglement on opening, but that just caused a little bruising. But 2 reserve rides. Hopefully will never do anything bad. Though my DZ is building up Team Titanium. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  14. I know definatly at the DZ where I trained and my now home DZ that the "hands on head" procedure and shimmying down the SL and Pulling reserve as you cut the SL is still taught. I think its the same at most UK dzs as they all primarily get S/L students. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  15. In the UK there are no currency time limits, as long as you have your A (which at 40 jumps I assume you have). But you might be made to do some kind of currency jump with an instructor or someone, but is down to the CCI at the centre you turn up to. I know Ive seen someone with about 2 jumps after his A turn up (after a year of not jumping) at my DZ and just do an unsupervised solo. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  16. Thye have tried to get skydiving in, and it was ruled that skydiving is not a powered sport, but the "power" only assists in the set up, not the actual execution of the sport. So therefore it is admissable. But, with it not being a very popular sport and not so spectator friendly, its probably not gonna get in any time soon. For it to be eligable: There must be a world championships in the sport (done) There must be 75 nations over 4 continenets that actually do the sport (not necessarily compete. done I think) There are actually several sports being removed from the olympics for bejing, which again doesnt help us. These include: baseball, softball, canoe slalom, some equstrian events, modern pentathlon, lightweight rowing events, racewalking and the heaviest sailing class. (may be a few more). This again isnt really good for the inclusion of parachuting. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  17. In the UK, you need a D licence before you can be an AFFI, but a D is 1000 jumps here. Tandem is 800 Jumps and 8Hrs freefall. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  18. Its cheap, aslong as you dont take 48 instead of 18 jumps to get your licence
  19. Dont worry about it. You got back fine. You havent seen real instability untill you the "Mandy Chowe" special on vid at our DZ. He thought he was gonna die, but its the funniest thing ever (dont worry, hes still jumping and laughs at it too). His moves put even Olav Zipser to shame Im sure if you saw it, you'd feel better about what you did. You did good
  20. The Pac XL WAS designed for skydiving, but it is based on a plane (the cresco) which is a light general purpose, short strip aircraft, which is used alot down under. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  21. You learn something on every jump, even if its just canopy control. Of the people that go 7/7, I really doubt everyone was perfect. Everyone has their own problem areas. I spoke to an AFF instructor the other day and he said hes had maybe 1 perfect student in over 10 years doing AFF. He himself did loads of 5s delays, cos he kept kicking. Hes one of the best RW jumpers on the DZ now. I know someone who did do the RAPS progression in 18 jumps (min at my dz) and now hes a little cocky (after only 60 jumps), and he hardly jumps. I feel you'll probably be a better person because of the failures. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  22. My first dive exit was rubbish. I did a whole front loop. Still passed it though. I think I nice piece of advice I got was to look at an object on the ground about 45degrees up (best is actually another skydiver in the air) and just keep looking at it as you go. This way, if you're going over forward, you'll put your head back which natually arches you more, and if you're going too flat you'll dearch a little, catching the relative wind on your legs to push you back relative again. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  23. In the UK, there are no currency rules, but it would be down to the CCI (centre cheif instructor) as to what you should do after a layoff. At my DZ Ive seen someone come back after 12 months with no jumping, only about 25 jumps to his name, just do a Solo from 10k (he actually hasnt been back for 18 months since that now). Also, Ive heard of people just redoing a level 7 with an instructor. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  24. My DZO has told me that everytime theres a publicised fatality, his tandem bookings/first jump course bookings increase. As for people thinking you can do what they see arnie do in the movies, they're just stupid. Im sure for every 1 person that saw arnie do some cool stunt and think "I wanna do it exactly like that" there are at least 10 others that saw the same movie and just wanna learn to skydive. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  25. For everyone converting to throwaway at peterlee Ian makes them do a lob from the top with practice touches, and then makes them do a hop n pop. Its not a BPA requirement its just a local one that Ian likes to do. I dont think theres any requirement in the OPs manual except a brief and maybe a conversion jump.
