  1. I think its all about priorities. How many of these young guys with squillions of jumps do you see with a steady girlfriend? or live in a house? or have kids? Then as they get older, how many have a steady girlfriend? house? or kids? Seems to be the end of the genetic line for them. In my 4th year of university, I only managed about 50 jumps during the accademic year, mostly paid for by packing. I had racked up over £1000 on a new jumpsuit and a holiday to empuria during the summer the year before. That is now all paid off. The club also subsidised jump tickets. But Ive now graduated and have a job and I can afford to pay rent and be part of a team with a significant outgoing for training. I have a long term girlfriend who I plan to move in together with and buy a house in a couple of years (in that damn expensive london). We recon we can pay off a significant mortgague, put about the same in for team training, live on and save on our combined salaries. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  2. You will have to join the BPA, which if you can get away with just the insurance part will cost you about £50, otherwise full membership is £112. But yeah, there are a few DZs down that way, theres a list on www.bpa.org.uk, but its not very up to date with reguards which DZ has which aircraft. You dont have to worry about getting anything else before you come, you can buy a hook knife over here at most, if not all DZs, and you dont need your FS1 to jump with other people, only 1 non-FS1 jumper is allowed per group. FS1 isnt just about getting 4 points of 4 way. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  3. Damn, it's gotta suck to pay more per gallon of regular than we pay per gallon of jetA I think we pay about $3.30/gallon of jetA About $7 for a gallon of Avgas UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  4. I think he's refering to Bodyflight Bedford. They have a "World Challenge" qith quite large cash prizes. www.worldchallenge.info UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  5. I know 3/4 people that bought gravitator suits in the UK, and all got them back within 3/4 weeks. They were all happy with the suits they got. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  6. I was sitting in the UK getting quite angry when all the americans were complaining about the price of petrol (gasoline). Did it go to $2/gallon? we now pay about 90p/litre, thats about $6/silly US gallon, but then again about 50% of our petrol prices are tax (but no tax on JetA1 ) UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  7. I was just wondering what the most expensive jump tickets (slots) in the world were. I get the feeling the UK is a contender for first place. Generally tickets range from £18-21 ($31.50 - $36.75) with the most expensive Ive seen being £26 ( $45.50) at skydive jersey, if you're not a member. this is using current rate of about £1:$1.75 Also what about tandems, Tandems here seem to be now around the £250 ($440) mark, Im sure they were about £200 5 years ago. 8. Well, looking at my road, there arnt any speedbumps in the picture, but the've been there now for at least 2 years. So Im guessing the pictures are more than 2 years old. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  9. The links for the websites for Flightline Systems and Stunts Adventure Equipment now link to those annoying search pages that are put there when a website dissapears. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.

  12. Well, I dont think theres a rule in any country that says you have to actually turn it on? UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  13. I noticed a few of the skeleton bob competitors were wearing Z1 full-faces. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  14. I think the issue with connecting it to the large ring is that its just there as a potential. Im sure it wouldnt, but its just more risk, as it could jam it. Why reduce some of the middle ring space, when you can quite happily connect it to the hard cut-away housing. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  15. I knew a couple of people going to do it from the UK. One dropped out cos she was told she was too experienced already (the other guy was more experienced, but did it anyway afaik, havent heard from him in a while). Its NZ$9000 up front, which includes AFF, 200 jumps, FS and FF coaching, learning how to fly camera, packing, how to run a DZ and some push towards becoming a S/L instructor. Its aimed at people who have never jumped or very few jumps before. My friend had >200 jumps and could already FF and had her FS1. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  16. I would have to recommend Good Stuff. Its about an hour long, loads of great footage, really nicely edited and the music mix is just great. I can watch it over and over. THen its got about the same length of extras ontop of the main feature. Its one of the cheapest now too. To be fair though, I havent seen many other videos, just a couple of wally gubbins films ( the "free fall photographer" and "static line instructor" made me laugh ) and soul flyers. They're just not long enough. As for base jumping, The Shovels is a good vid, as is the one I saw at the weekend, but I cant remember what its called. Its one of the few that doesnt have an "In Memory of" during the credits UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  17. Try jumping in the UK! UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  18. doesnt the cypres re-asses the "ground level" every so often? So if you drive to another dz, and wait long enough, the ground level will be changed? But obviously safest to turn it off and back on again. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  19. More surface area on your legs, therefor more powerful inputs. Though all their usefullness is lost if you simply just drop a knee for turning. You need to kindof tilt your legs. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  20. There are alot of full members that are not active jumpers, or people that dont make many jumps. I think all pilots are full members, for example, and not alot of them jump. Ive always been told that of the membership figures, you should halve it to get actual active jumpers. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  21. That is likely because the BPA policy only covers members for a pityful £50000 3rd party insurance abroad, excl. US. Some countries probably want more cover than this, which is why they'll make you get other cover. They shouldnt need you to have anything other than 3rd party. If you your injure yourself and you have no medical cover, thats your own fault. I dont know of any parachuting organisation that provides medical cover of any sort (other than 3rd party) with its membership. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  22. There are many different emergency procedures that are all perfectly valid. Different DZs teach different ones, but they will all respect what you have been taught if it is different from their own. I dont think this is the place to mention different EP as it may confuse people. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  23. One thing that got me at the AGM was how terribly David Hickling tried to make a point at the AGM. He stuck to the same point over and over, and it didnt really make any sense. Also, although I didnt really hear what was going on and didnt really understand as I was at the back, and maybe a little hung over, I am informed that the insurance representative said he was actually quite happy to change the policy, the current terms were dictated by the BPA. I from these two points, I cant see how we have ANY confidence in the "Insurance Forum" members, who seem to be made up of volonteers who dont know what they're talking about, looking at it the way things came across at the meeting. I make this point with no experience myself, so Im probably not allowed to say anything. But surely they should be trying to get someone like me to understand, not alienate me? UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  24. I think thats all fine, but I think most foreign organisations require you to be a citizen for you to have cover abroad. So as a Brit getting German insurance, you'd be covered in Germany, but not at any DZ outside Germany :( UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
  25. At your level, always do exactly as you are taught. Talk to your instructors, whoever that is. They will basically tell you what it does, and what happens when you chop, but they will tell you not to try and make up your own EPs. People have gone in thinking they have an RSL when they havent. Ive also heard of students being grounded/severely bollocked for NOT pulling the reserve handle because they were relying on the RSL. UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.
