  1. I you are going to Empuria they can lend you lead when you arrive. Last time I flew with Ryanair I took my weight belt in my hand luggage. Security at East Midlands had a look at it then let me go.
  2. He means that he has contacted AAD but they have not replied to him.
  3. The plane took off with his luggage on board! I thought that anyone who was denied boarding for whatever reason had to have their luggage removed from the aircraft before it was allowed to leave?
  4. If you look in the chairman's address to the AGM on p4 John Smyth says 'We thought that you may decide to leave the Council to negotiate on your behalf the best value premium and insurance policy with the insurers. Or that you may decide to hold an EGM formally to approve the insurance premium once we know what it is.' It looks like the new membership £ has been approved by the Council without further reference to the membership despite the possibility of holding an EGM. I know we can't jump without insurance but I personally would still have liked the opportunity to have a vote on the subject. I would have expected the vote to be carried but at least this would have followed discussion directly with us the members.
  5. try www.ukskydiver.co.uk for more debate on the matter.
  6. Found it! Tony De Bruin's number is 32 475 48 29 95 [email protected]
  7. I think they are based at DZ Zwartberg or a military base near there. Tony advertises in Skydive the mag but I can't find an up to date edition with his contact details in it.
  8. Both Tony DeBruin's Skyvans are based in Belgium although they make their way around Europe a fare bit during the summer. At least one of them will be at both Langar's boogies this summer.
  9. Ours doesn't. I don't think its as fast as the PACs and Porters I've jumped either (Someone else mentioned the TurboFinist - that's worth a mention during winter months for having a completely draughtproof door. Toasty
  10. It's that easy? You pay a clergyman and boom your a Muslim? Is it totally legal or just skirting the letter of the law? I did it for practical reasons meaning that it would not stand up to any scrutiny by a real Muslim. The mullah knew full well why I was doing it and was quite happy to go ahead on that basis.
  11. Technically speaking I am a Muslim and I skydive! To be honest though the only reason I am Muslim is that I paid a Mullah £50 for the privilege. My wife is Iranian so when we go to Iran and want to share a hotel room I have to prove that I am married to her which means that my name has to be on her ID docs and to do that I have to be a Muslim. But apart from that yes there are skydiving Muslims. There are DZ's in many Middle Eastern countries as well as in Indonesia.
  12. Airkix and Bodyflight don't seem to have any problem filling their tunnels at £600 per hour, with Bodyflight even getting teams over from America to train! I also know of 4 way FS teams in the UK who are booking up to 16 hours of tunnel time in order to hone their skills for the upcoming season. They also intend going to the States for a skills camp with a coach but the bulk of their training will be done in the tunnel in the Uk and will be spread over the winter and spring.
  13. Yeah why not if it helps you out. Its going to take me a while to get my luggage and to get the car so it shouldn't be that long to wait. PM me and we'll talk more.
  14. I may be able to help as I have a flight arriving at about 5pm and have hired a car for the week.
  15. I just got quotes from everyone listed on the BPA website and Endsleigh came out cheapest. I want to do some more double checking but I'll probably go for one of their policies. I want to make sure that the quality is as good as the price.
  16. In 1976 my new gear was broken down like this... New custom WonderHog $300 New Strato Star $300 New Piglett2 reserve $300 How I miss the Good Ole Days. 359 Check out www.westegg.com as they have an inflation calculator. According to that a $900 rig in 1976 would be $3089 in 2005
  17. Who should apologise to who? Should the private businesses or their successors apologise, or should it be relatives of the traders, or the Government, or the guys in Africa who actively cooperated in the trade. Then to whom should they apologise? Why should there be an apology for something which for better or worse was fairly normal practice back then. Aren't we applying modern pronciples to something which happened and was acceptable for the times? Lastly the British Government was amongst the first countries to take active measures to stop the slave trade. That might not have been enough to counter the terrible cost of the trade but at least we tried to bring it to a halt.
  18. In the UK AAD's are compulsory for A cert skydivers only.
  19. Langar is good with great instructors, planes, and a large LZ. But if you are from York you could consider somewhere closer to home such as Hib, after all when you finish AFF you'll probably want a DZ as close to home as possible in order to keep jumping as much as possible. having said that people drive up to 200 miles to get to Langar on a regular basis so if you get to like a place distance need not be a problem.
  20. '20 minute classes instead of 1/2 and 1 hour blocks..... ' is aimed at whuffos. SV or Airkix in the UK has been incredible succesful targeting none skydivers and sells most of its time, particularly at weekends, in 20 minute blocks like this. An hours is divided in two with up to 10 people per session with 2 minutes per person plus a bit of time for the instructor to show off his or her moves.
  21. Excuse me, not all the people who died in the WTC attacks were American. 568 non Americans died including 56 Brits, 36 Indians, 34 Puerto Ricans, 26 from the Dominican Republic and 25 from Japan.

    BASE in Iran

Tabrik Migam! I didn't know that there was much in the way of skydiving let alone base jumping in Iran.
  23. I've just checked the BPA regs reagrding aircraft safety. They say: 1.5. All parachutists must fit helmets before take off, except in the case of parachutists jumping with camera helmets, who may fit their helmets at the most suitable time prior to jumping. (Helmets not fitted for take off should be securely located in the aircraft). 1.8. Where parachutists restraints are fitted, they are to be used during take off and landing. From my limited experience neither of these rules appear to be enforced 100% of the time, although all none cameramen wear their helmets for takeoff up to 1500 feet. Presumably 'Helmets not fitted for take off should be securely located in the aircraft' refers to cameramen and therefore means that their helmets should be secured by some sort of strap rather than just being kep in a persons hands.
  24. Well all those saying your choice etc are not chosing to join the written debate as pretty much everyone in the thread so far has said that seatbelts should be worn. Personally I did not wear one until recently and I think this was partly out of ignorance. There are two reasons I do now. Firstly because of the Dunkeswell 206 crash last year in the UK. There was a lot of conjecture and debate saying that lives might have been saved by using seatbelts. Second a pilot at my DZ did a zero g which resulted in all the skydivers having big grins on their faces but also which shifted everyone around a great deal. I figured that if an intentional act like this can have such a large effect then an aborted take off would be even more serious. That said seatbelts in the UK are not apparently mandatory. Helmets on take off are unless you are a camera flyer but I have never seen these restrained in the way described above. Thanks to this thread I would say that I am now a lot more aware of the risks/benefits involved in seatbelt useage.
  25. Why not go earlier for the Christmas boogie?
