  1. Is it just me, or does no one do this anymore? What happened to the good old 8-way SCR dives and beer pouring ceremonies? It's the quintessential skydiving initiation!

    Audibles

what do you want the audible for? speed read out and information or just warning tones? i say go for it... never jump without mine.

    Mr. Bill

don't break your hand hanging on. expect bruises. have someone static line the pilot chute on exit and expect line twists. if you're hanging on, be ready to be ripped off just when you thought you'd be able to hold on. warning: riggs break doing this sort of thing. like 3 ring releases being bent. "dude, where's my main?"
  4. gotta bump this one... gooooood post :)
  5. hmmm. knee turns are the sh!t. think of it as the law of opposites. right knee downward = left turns ... left knee downward = right turns. this, in conjuntion with arm movements will help you create a pinpoint turn with great accuracy and precision and speed. my advice, practice and don't think, just do. in a few jumps, it will be second nature.
  6. jumped with a hellwedge reserve handle for around 150 jumps until started freeflying. foot docks near handle make me nervous so i got a silver soft handle which resembles a cut-a-way handle. feel confident that can use just fine. also use an RSL. my bet would be with the pillow not the wedge. what you see is what you get. peel and pull... come home safe.
  7. depends on your instructor but normally an unlicensed jumper must redo a level of AFF for a recurrency after 30 days. it's best to try to accomplish AFF quickly without breaks as this will help you to remember the feel and balance of freefall and you won't have to regain currency. "dude, where's my main?"
  8. come on out to your local DZ and join us! you on your belly, us on our heads... sounds like a kick @$$ hybrid :)
  9. skipped A and B and tested directly to C (took all tests) after 100 jumps.... old USPA rules.
  10. just stay in the sport long enough. watch swoopers bounce. watch a few friends ride reserves down after cut-a-ways. watch 2 friends die and 2 go into intensive care. this will humble you.
  11. go to the FAA's website and take a look at FARs. also, the thing is, a skydive is officially considered an emergency procedure and is hence, LEGAL -- for the skydiver -- hehe. "dude, where's my main?"
  12. http://www.rigginginnovations.com Dave Dewulf's senior riggers class (Maytown, PA): [email protected] or shadow a Master Rigger "dude, where's my main?"
  13. lol. 1) solo jump, big puffy clouds, peak of my abilities, king air, breathtaking scenery, jumpers below spaced apart (i'm watching them), chased my own shadow in a cloud. spectacular. -- Skydive San Marcos, TX 2) group skydive... over the ocean on the boarder between florida and alabama (gulf of mexico about 1/2 mi out -- had water gear), 6-way STAR... sunset, beautiful coastline, high rises below... still gives me chills... 6-way all went to T's with leg down and then broke apart... buddy flies up to me and i'm unsuspecting and grabs me and takes me into a fruit loop. i'm seeing beach, waves, sky over and over and i'm like... wholy freakin' sh!t. pull around 4 or 5 and ride risors for 6 or 7 mins. land beside beach bar and enjoy cold margarita and shrimp and shoot breeze with everybody. totally marvelous -- Emerald Coast Skydivers, AL. 3) 5 degrees on the ground -10 or so at altitude... exit in 4-way from cessna... helmet frozen shut... various loops and rolls to redocks. quiet for freefall and cold is numming finger tips. unique scenery... small towns, winter trees... beautiful. -- Arkansas Aero Sports, Arkansas. 4) just got done watching a jumper go low and his cypress fire at 500' or so... just made it. i turn to an expert 4-way waiting to board the otter with me -- F*CK -- board otter -- music going in cabin... i'm thinking, i'm nuts to do this but i love it... 16-way exits aircraft and i swoop to formation. dock and just hang out and watch all the skydivers. everyone just jamming and having a great time. track out of formation -- best track ever... just smooth... clean on heading openning. love skydiving :) -- Skydive Arizona, AZ
  14. it's not cheap but neither is safety. i'd rather spend a small fortune on state of the art equipment and land safely than otherwise. try throwing some 'new used inspected' equipment to the list. when i first bought my rigg (over 3 years ago now) i bought a new container and reserve and bought a used main. chances are, as a new jumper, you'll buy a new one relatively soon anyways. the little extras waited a few months and i used DZ equipment. "dude, where's my main?"
  15. i understand your predicament well as it took me 3 years to pay off my skydiving equipment and training. the best advice i can offer is to a) finish up the training without too much of a delay as currency = success or b) stop and save up enough cash to pay for all the training and accomplish it in a few weekends. if AFF is difficult for you, try some tunnel time in Vegas or Pigeon Forge or elsewhere. it is also expensive but is very worthwhile. i believe this may have singley been the most helpful part of passing AFF -- that and a good instructor. blue ones :) "dude, where's my main?"
  16. lol. relax, enjoy the ride down. it's worth a million bucks every time. i only remember like 10 seconds of any given skydive anyhoot. the more jumps you do over time, the more you will remember but you actually tend to remember more of the feeling than anything and they're never the same. :) blue ones! "dude, where's my main?"
  17. lol. the classic near first malfunction scenario. i was in the same boat about 2+ years ago. i could have described it verbatim what you've said. after chatting with friends and instructors et. al. i came up with 2 conclusions: 1) 1800' means chop -- if it doesn't flare and isn't square -- bye bye -- i've got a good reserve 2) you can land a canopy with the rear risors (i've had to with a broken steering line about 1 year back.) i still don't know what caused the knot but many call this the classic newbie situation and error. we live and learn. "dude, where's my main?"
  18. mid 1990's at my first DZ: Astras :( low 2000's at my latest DZ: Cypres :) :) "dude, where's my main?"
  19. you'll be just fine dude; never give up: 1) don't worry, don't think just arch and enjoy the view (remember your emergency procedures) 2) breath... you'd be surprised how easy it is to hold your breath and be uptight while your out the door... so take a deep breath and then out you go :) 3) laugh and crack jokes with instructors and people in the jump plane -- this helps me the most 4) focus on your instructor while in freefall. mine always had this shit eating grin and would make me relax and enjoy the ride. pick one who will help you relax... some will, some won't. HAVE FUN and BE SAFE! "dude, where's my main?"
  20. i'll second that the jumper who pulled could have been (needs to be) more aware as this has happened to me. jumper pulled out below as they were paniced about a cloud deck and i almost ate fabric. we need to pull out where we said we would. but.... the lower jumper always has the right of way. it's up to the individuals above to be aware of his/her position and make it aware (to best of ability) to others. it's not an easy whos right and wrong. 'for God sakes be careful out there'. "dude, where's my main?"
  21. use a high risor input to stable my descent if at all possible. use a hook knife to cut the line -- ONLY -- if it's a A line and is accessible. otherwise, try like heck to control it and aim for something soft.
  22. the answer isn't an easy one and pertains to the individual. i only have disconnected mine for 2 reasons: 1) doing some stupid stunt like a Mr. Bill dive 2) or doing CRW when would i disconnect it: 1) camera flying 2) with 2 canopies out and getting ready to chop the main if i had enough time to disconnect the RSL 1st 3) with plenty of altitude (not likely) during a spinning malfunction. some jumpers have experienced malfunctioning reserves (risors caught under arms et. al.) due to spinning mains and not being stable on reserve deployment my take: 1) i'll always use it -- a) saves time b) what if my left arm is trapped 2) it's designed to save your life and at least, increase your chances in an emergency mine's staying connected.
  23. experience really helps but... judge the ground distance well and very gradually shallow your decent rate. almost move your toggles down in intervals but never all at once and never move them back up. it makes for a cool landing... and lots of broken bones. "dude, where's my main?"
  24. not certain but my spectre is a ZP and it takes roughly 600'. i can adjust this by the way i pack though.
  25. woohoo! will always remain one of your first but most memorable jumps :) i remember mine and there were no instructors there so i was pretty scared. exhillerating and terrifying all in one. priceless.
