Off the home-owners insurance rant for a while..... I just lost a demo due to the insurance increase. It will be very hard for our team to do anymore demo's because of this whole situation. We do demo's for non-profit/charitable groups pretty much exclusively and we don't make ANY money (except our expenses). Which means we can't promote our sport to people or groups, i.e. childrens charities, make-a-wish, aviation foundations/non-profit groups. It's a shame it's had to come to this, I didn't mind a portion of my USPA dues going to help the insurance costs. In the big picture it only helps further our sport. If you want to be super accurate, take two pieces of rectangular cloth, 10-20 meters long, make an X on the ground, away from the main landing area, and have at it. The center of the X is your target. Spray paint is good too but, it may piss off the DZO. Marking the ground in any manner will work, but again make it away from the main peas or target. This is great practice and is fun to bet beers on the closest to the target! "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

You may also want to "ride the wire". At about 600-800 ft go to about half brakes into the wind facing the target. Imagine a wire leading up from the target at a 45degree angle to you. Using just your toggles adjust to stay on the "wire". If you're a little high more brakes, a little low more forward flight. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty cool. If you're on the wire at half brakes keep it there and flare out with the rest of your brakes, effectively "shutting down" the canopy a few feet above the ground. BE CAREFUL, this takes alot practice, and on no wind days it's better to let the canopy fly for a better flare. That's the way i fly my StartracII. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

I had the chance to train with the 101st Demo team a couple of years ago. As many free jumps from a Blackhawk as I could do. It was 95 degress, and no shade, these guys were hardcore. Jump pack, pack jump......all day. I was used to doing it just for fun, these guys kicked my ass!! And we'd partied the night before. I'm sure the Knights are the same but worse. I had my first cutaway there on their gear, which wasn't bad, plus the helo picked me up out of some farmers driveway. It was worth all the funny looks this old chunky Air Force Reservist got from the Army guys who didn't know me! "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

I remember the herd, especially when we all had to turn around, bend over, and spread. At that point I had a couple of concerns............ And the doc who had to walk through and look, he must REALLY have needed a job. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

Let's face it, MEPS doctors are at the bottom of the food chain. No wonder they had to consult the "big books". MEPS blows, I went through it over 20 years ago......some things never change! "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

I like my Triathlon 190, it's sporty enough for a conservative pilot like myself. I load it at about 1.2, it's stable and great for low-pressure demo's. BUT, be careful packing, I had a Tri 220 with a 2 grommet bag. I slopped packed and WHAM!!!!! It blew out two cells completely. It opened so friggin' hard it knocked me goofy(er) for a couple of seconds, and left dark bruises on the inside of my thighs from my leg straps. It was my fault for not packing properly. I contacted Aerodyne and they were very helpful. They hooked me up with a 4 grommet zp bag, a new 190, and the performance package for a VERY reasonable price. I haven't had any problems with my new canopy I've had it for 3 years, just nice snivelly openings. Aerodyne is first rate to deal with, outstanding customer service. As a kid I remember watching the Bob Hope Christmas Specials with my grandfather every year. He used to howl with laughter, as a kid I thought the humor was cheesy but, as an adult I get it now, Bob Hope was timeless. If you ever get a chance to visit the Dayton Ohio area, the Air Force Museum at Wright Patt AFB has an excellent display detailing Bob's service to the troops. I've jumped a Dolphin for several years. I'm very satisfied with it. I'm not interested in keeping up with the Jones's, or setting up all my gear up to be color coordinated beautiful.
