  1. I think the point was more about you tucking your pilot chute back in not your alti training (bold text) If it had come out while you were unstable later in the jump or underneath another jumper things could have gone badly
  2. +1 for canopy exersises Since 2012 it has become an A licence requiment in SA to perform certain canopy exersises after a briefing Although very little happens on a student canopy during these manovers it is good to understand the effects These include front and rear riser turns, flat turns and a stall If you know what to expect the stall is not that scary Turns more than 360 degrees are discouraged due to students general lack of altitude awearness and the chance of canopy collisions. I practised skills like level control and tracking
  3. Sharlto Copley one of the actors in Elysium did a reddit IAMA yesterday http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1jzdqc/i_am_that_guy_from_district_9_aka_sharlto_copley/ Same actor who Played Wikus in District 9 and Murdock in A-Team Had not heard about this film but sounds like it will be right up my ally
  4. My recomendation is ask various manufacturers how many canopies they produce in a year vs. number of working days/shifts in a year That will give you a nice average that is not dependent on canopy models, schedualling, material availablity etc. that may exist which causes delays that should be factored into an average
  5. Thanks Since I only edited the footage 2 days ago I am not surprised you have not seen it
  6. I attended my first boogie last weekend and among the many memories which I have this one deserves to be shared It was my friend's first wingsuit rodeo so I wipped up a quick edit of the footage. Enjoy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlxpNPseb0Y
  7. You got like 25 seconds to screw around and pull at 4k. loads of time for "epic flips" Jumping from a non-turbo 206 at altitude means i have lower standards than you lucky turbine dropzone folks for what is a normal exit altitude
  8. What you jumping from? My new favourite is a gainer exit, back flip, off a C206 Holding the strut, back to the prop, jump off arching with hands at the sides Nice slow rotaion watching the plane and then you just extend your arms as you get belly to earth. Looking for some cool ideas myself
  9. Reminds me of my DZ The manifest chick and one of the owners are now a couple with a kid He still owes beers for "knocking up the manifest chick" :p On a serious note though, as long as you can remain professional while doing manifest, keep up the same standard of work, why not. No one wants the operation to suffer because 2 teenages are off behind the hanger making out
  10. All Aerodyne canopies are manufactered in SA The containers are made in the USA
  11. 320kph belly to earth? I had some uncomfortable flapping going on when tracking away at the end of a naked 4way formation but did not seem faster before that The camera man in a jumpsuit was struggling to reach us so maybe we were falling faster than he expected I am going to see if anyone logged the speed
  12. Thanks for sharing For this reason one of the experienced jumpers at my DZ randomly grabs peoples chest straps to see they are routed correctly
  13. One of my most vivid dreams recently was after being ground crew for a demo jump. Dremt I saw one of my new friends come in under a spinning mal...

    Engineers :(

How do you know I am not fun to be around Sure we might be wired a bit differently and tend to be more methodical but we are not all boring pocket protector wearing sorts The engineers at my university were the most fun
  15. Wii the source of all knowledge says that it was produced until 2002 :/ Pretty sure it will climb better with the turbine though http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-2
  16. Speak to your instructor, they will give you all the advice you need as a student You don't need to buy a rig yet
  17. Welcome to the forum As another person with the wingsuit goal in mind let me chip in my 2c To lean to fly a wingsuit in 2 years is doable if you have the finances to get the training. To do a wingsuit BASE jump in 2 years is another matter Firstly you are going to need to get your AFF done. Johannesburg skydiving club is based in Carltonville. Alternativly there are clubs in Preteria and Witbank. All 3 fly turbine aircraft which you will soon learn is a good thing ;) I have copied an extract from the PASA (Parachute association of South Africa) MOPs (Manual of Procedures) Before attempting a wingsuit jump, a skydiver must: • have a minimum of a PASA B licence or foreign equivalent. • have a minimum of 500 freefall skydives; or • have a minimum of 200 freefall skydives, made within the past 18 months, and receive one-onone instruction from a wingsuit coach who is confident in the jumper’s ability and has received a waiver to the 500 freefall rule from the NSTO or his appointed representative. • have completely read and understood all documentation and training information provided with the wingsuit by the manufacturer. • Use a wingsuit of appropriate type and size as recommended by the wingsuit manufacturer. • have the ability to perform exits and skydive in the deployment position described in this section before making a jump with the wingsuit. • It is compulsory for any skydiver making a first wingsuit jump to get a briefing from a wingsuit pilot approved by the CI before his first jump regardless of the jumper’s experience level. You will need to spend lots of time at the DZ to get 200 jumps in 18 month, but no one said it would be easy Your goal on doing a winguit BASE jump off of Brixton tower though I do not think is achievable in 2 years if you care about your own safety. Firstly the top of the antenna is 273m and it may or may not be possible to exit from the top. Realistically though it is not going to be an easy building to get access to unless you have an inside man. BASE jumping requires its own set of skills independent of skydiving and many reccomend a min of 200 jumps before getting into BASE. Once you have experience with BASE jumping only then would you look to add the wingsuit. Wingsuit BASE will then require jumping from some big wall sites in Switzerland or Norway to get used to how the wingsuit flys from a zero airspeed before you try going off a building. My R0.02 First step though would be getting into the sky. You have an ambitious goal even to learn to winsuit in 2 years. FYI the PASA MOPs will teach you a lot of that terminology you were wondering about: http://www.para.co.za/Files/PASA%20MOPs%202012.pdf
  18. about 4 years before having enough money to do aff I won a tandem as part of red bull comp Was hardly a student though, very much a passenger
  19. Our airforce sadly has no money to fly our Grippen fighters so this probably is not happening any time soon
  20. For those of you who do not know XKCD consider this an introduction. It is a "a web comic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." Topics often feature programming, science, engineering and pop culture references. http://www.xkcd.com/ The creator also runs a weekly blog where he answers unusual questions in a witty manner. Today's post looks at "What place on Earth would allow you to freefall the longest by jumping off it? What about using a squirrel suit?" http://what-if.xkcd.com/ DZ.com got referenced for the vertical speed of a wingsuit
  21. Just watched this for the first time in many years Found it pretty entertaining concidering I'm no longer a whuffo myself The short version of the movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stn8JKp5zAY
  22. Instead of starting a new thread I figured I would post this pic here. South African tradition is your 100th is naked The guy in the middle did his 100th yesterday so we had a load of 4 naked jumpers, a naked pilot and a cameraman in a jumpsuit. I got called in to fill the load after no other people wanted to brave the 25min ride to altitude in a 206 with no door and -2 deg C at exit. Turned out to be a fun experience but I think I'll wait till my turn till repeating it. As for tandem passengers and families, they thought the whole spectacle was pretty amussing
  23. I too am dreaming of these elusive turbine and twin engined jump ships :) Have only jumped from a 206 and 182 my first boogie is going to be a treat Attached is my DZ 206
  24. Hmmm maybe I'm lucky, my parents barely said more than try not to kill yourself and told me to have fun They ask how things are going etc. The fact I am financially independent and not living at home means that there is little they could have said to stop me so acceptance is easier
