  1. I cant reach toggles on my P3 without unzipping but I can get my risers just above the 3 rings. Its enough to correct an off heading and deal with 1-2 line twists. lifting your knees upwards helps
  2. Its probably good enough for indicating entry and exit gates in a performance competition but more than that you are asking for trouble.
  3. I thought uspa was 200 total, no mention of the 18 months. We have the same rules though in my country. I think the article was focused more on people looking to get into BASE. I chatted to my coach about this and he said for people interested he would only recommend it after 50 jumps or so. I plan to try it out, 200-400ft extra to deal with possible malfunctions can't hurt. As long as it does start inducing problems like off headings.
  4. Plenty around at our dz, our static line and freefall rigs for students are all Naros As other people have said they are not freefly friendly. Velcro needs to be in good condition and the reserve packed neatly or the riser covers are continually coming open If you plan to jump it for a year or 2 and then downsize why not if the price is right and you do fs. Otherwise I would look at other options you could keep longer and use for other disciplines
  5. I have been traveling with my rig recently and due to local rules I need to remove my main to get the weight down sufficiently for carry-on. I just check the main. When I got my rig a few years ago I replaced the cutaway handle and a rigger trimmed the non-RSL side a bit. However with my recent removal of the main I am not confident in the difference between the two sides. It can't be much more than 10mm (eyeball measurement not wearing the rig). What is the recommended difference in the cable lengths to ensure the RSL side doesn't release first even in a situation with twisted up risers ect. I'll remeasure wearing the rig to confirm the difference once I have an idea on the correct length. Even better would be the total lengths of the cables. Rig is a Vortex II-4 (170)
  6. There is more and more climbing harness technology making its way into Base harnesses. Predominantly due to the lighter weight. Check out the Adrenaline Base ABX harness. It would be cool to see some of that come over to skydiving. Think how much smaller the rigs free flyers wear could be if they got rid of the pesky 3kg or more of reserve and Pc
  7. Interestingly the BPA stats do not agree with you for general injuries. Minor and medium injuries (however those are classified) are more likely to happen on a tandem jump than for an experienced jumper Serious (Maybe this includes fatalities) though is more likely for experienced jumpers
  8. Gotta love the constancy of his posts though I started this thread originally. I jump PF not squirrel, not that it even matters I thought that if someone was interested in a single piece TS they may like to know about a new option. Its going to be called the Squirrel Sausage. Seriously though buy this one, I don't get that much free fall time from a Cessna. The jumper is ok too I guess https://www.facebook.com/1619831638282529/videos/vb.1619831638282529/1626417654290594/?type=2&theater
  9. No update from PF that I have seen Squirrel seems to be close to launching their one piece suit https://www.facebook.com/squirrelsuits/photos/a.118327514987375.24457.113493165470810/582869425199846/?type=3&theater
  10. I will say that the top mounting position on the rev2 leads to bumping the camera a lot. Especially with the face plate open if you put your head back it will often hit things while seated in the plane Iv mounted my mount to my camera with some mirror mounting double sided tape, seems pretty secure to me. It took a lot of force to rip off after I stuck it skew the first time A left side mounted Sony would be nice but I am not sure if the visor will be in frame
  11. Great for you guys, not so good for those in SA though as the prices have all gone to dollars and our currency took a dive I will be interested if the prices stay the same once things are made in the USA as with a 15:1 exchange rate currently it must be cheaper to manufacture here (military gear aside)
  12. So I have some questions relating to the polar plots in the viewer. I pulled in 3 jumps from a performance competition done on the same day and messed around finding a curve that would work across the 3 jumps. My reasoning is conditions were similar so max lift and min drag should not change and fitting a curve to data that should cover a range of angles of attack makes sense to me Is this valid reasoning? I was just interested in getting a baseline max l/d and seeing how I improve On the other hand if I did a jump focusing on taking the suit from a really steep dive through to a stall and fitted the data would that be better for getting values of max lift and min drag? Finally I'm wondering if a fairly accurate measurement of suit area could be taken along with known jumper mass could you then compare the data for min drag and max lift across multiple suits and pilots?
  13. Espen makes the comment that the times are still slower than the fastest one from last year The WWL webpage was revamped and the old results are gone, anyone know what the current course record is?
  14. I got no dog in the fight but what about the 100 way at perris in 2012 if we are forgetting records? Looking at the photo attached I can see that its not going to meet the grid criteria but 100 people in slot is also damn impressive
  15. Lack of barometer in my device would seem to rule it out Motorola Moto X (2014) A =100Hz, B=N/A, G=1hz I understand the advantages of your device measuring the free airstream but a 182 is not a big plane for having something solid like that strapped on my chest
  16. I agree it is unlikly on a PF suit but its not impossible I rigged my suit up and you can force the handles into the armwing. Maybe through lots of movement or a rig against your chest. Took these photos for a discussion on Reddit with some confused non wingsuiters. http://imgur.com/gallery/EtXEt/new The main focus on that discussion is the skydiver not using an RSL. Im happy to deal with possible reserve line twists over an AAD fire personally
  17. The PF suits with over the shoulder zippers should be safe, same with the TS designs that are similar (I have never rigged up one of these though) Personally I don't see a big advantage to the smaller suits on the market being designed to flown in a BASE mode for reduced drag. I'm a noob though so what do I know
  18. For WS I would love to have some form of data logging similar to what a flysight does with the ability to view on my smart phone immediately after the jump Altitude/Vertical speed/horizontal speed/GR How accurate that would be from a smart phone on my chest is debatable but it would be good enough to have a look and see if the change in body position was achieving the designed effect Otherwise a simple data logging function like a visio/N3 offers. Exit altitude, freefall time, average vertical speeds.
  19. South Africa - Mandatory for tandems and free fall students without an A licence
  20. Have you spoken to your instructor about this, what did they say? As other people have said it sounds like a combination of a poorly fitted gear that should hopefully be picked up before you board the plane Make sure YOU are happy with the gear before your next skydive
  21. Your profile does not say what country you are from, apparently student training is rather different to mine Our students are shown the gear, we deploy the main and explain the deployment procedure and what various components are for. Everyone get to touch and feel and ask questions Most importantly though, no student is cleared to jump until they have shown to be able to handle their emergency procedures correctly in a suspended harness (this means pulling handles in the correct order with the correct timing) This is applicable to static line and AFF students. I recommend speaking to an instructor and getting your questions answered. Once you land from a jump your gear is unpacked so lay it out and talk through everything before it gets packed
  22. No but considered buying one after some demo jumps (not WS). Ended up finding a 2nd hand pilot in the size I was after for less money. My limited experience is that it is pretty similar to a pilot in glide ratio but maybe a bit more of a powerful flare. Comparing an 8 year old pilot to a 1 year old volt though. My WS coach had no issues putting a ffc jumper on a volt when he showed up with an elliptical.
  23. A number of them being used in SA My friend jumps a hornet as his WS canopy. It opens fast even with careful packing but has not hurt him, definitely no pilot though
  24. Hmmm I would have guessed the swift was also a small size suit It is a bit larger than a Phantom for example but smaller than the other intermediate suits on the list We had a mini competition 2 weeks ago with a single round for time, distance and speed. I enjoyed looking over my flysight data afterwards but would really need to do some jumps with headphones in the flysight to make the most of the learning experience
  25. What do you mean by stowing them on half brakes? Skydiving canopies typically have only one setting unlike SD base canopies There are a few reasons for stowing the brakes from my understanding 1) preventing the canopy from surging forward by a large amount on opening 2) less forward speed for those off headings when you are pointing towards other canopies 3) I think it also helps slow inflation *Maybe* Where are the canopy designers?
