  1. There was no 360, there was a 270, and after that he was too deep in the corner to do anything but bounce. I eagerly await your inevitable opinion on swooping after you have mastered the art of camera flying. Totally was a 270, Can't believe he didn't bail at 180. I already have an opinion on swooping, it's crazy. I enjoy front riser turns but I normally do them around 2k. 720 Is as much as I'll do because I'll hit about 65 MPH (according to my Viso II) and that close enough to cypress firing speed. that statement is pretty funny considering there are 7 criteria for a cypress to fire. Its not simply about speed. The number of people that know what all 7 criteria is less than 3. AGAIN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW.

  3. IMO the few times you should see S-turns once in the pattern are imminent danger of injury of missed target, or tandems landing. I don't teach it in AFF. Why would you teach something to a student then as soon as they are off student status tell them that they are no longer ok to do?
  4. Fuck I just drove through there on my way home from vacation. So just FYI in the state of California you do not have to provide ID unless you are accused of a crime. If ask to identify yourself all you are legally obligate to do is give your full name and address.
  5. What mode are you shooting in to get those kind of bursts with autofocus? I got an A5000 to try after talking to a couple people and reading reviews on here, but I'm having some issues (probably self-induced). For one thing, it's pretty slow using Continuous AF in Tv mode- maybe 1.5 fps, at most- sometimes slower. Single shot AF in Tv is much faster but a lot more of the shots are out of focus. I use Intelligent Auto with the flash for in-plane/hangar shots and it works great. Haven't tried either of the auto modes in freefall- should I? Also, I recently had to replace a worn out tongue switch. Put the new one in (Conceptus- same as the old one), and it worked fine on the ground, and in the plane, but I got very few or no freefall shots (yes, I was pushing on it). Happened three jumps in a row, so I gave up for the day and took it home to troubleshoot. Took the tongue switch out, along with the $90 Hypoxic 2.5mm to MULTI adapter (), and of course couldn't duplicate the problem no matter how hard I tried. I did notice that the 2.5mm plug is pretty loose in the adapter, so I'm wondering if that was causing some of my issues- although if it was, I wasn't able to recreate them at my kitchen table. Any thoughts? Most likely it was your adapter I had a problem with one when using a cam eye and adapter on a cx video camera. If I rotated the 2.5mm plug the light would go out but still be functioning. So I solved it by taping the plug in place when funcitoning. BTW the hypoxic adapter is not made by hypoxic. He just carries them in stock. As for what mode I shoot in. With the A6000 I can put it in intelligent plus mode and get beautiful shots every time. Another guy at the dz has the A5000 and has similar focusing and fps problems you are having. When he shoots in shutter or aperture priority he has much better results.
  6. actually it has a lot to do with the incident
  7. action cam is Sony's version of the sports action camera. I use them for everything. I personally feel they image quality is better than the small consumer line of Sony cameras. Especially if you add a wide angle lens. eta: fat finger typing
  8. correction it was a towing company employee. Total "C" in action. ESPN has suspended her for 1 week.
  9. How many of those deaths were Suicides? Homicides? How many were acts of self defense? How many were "accidents"? Numbers alone are pretty useless without categorizing them. eta: No different then how the USPA breaks down the fatalities every year. Numbers need definition behind them.
  10. I am a newb vidiot and take no offense at the term. I was given the opportunity to jump with a team and learn the ropes. Only made it a 5 way 3 times through an entire season. Had no video busts during Nats. I attribute that to my awesome team positioning themselves clearly in front of my camera no matter where I happened to be. If the term "vidiot" causes one's panties to bunch, I say go commando and, "HTFU".
  11. I haven't shot on 11fps yet so I can't answer that, however I have not hit a buffer while shooting 7fps
  12. Currently using Sony A6000 with kit lens. Fastest auto focusing camera on the market. I can shoot 7fps with the camera focusing every shot. For tandems its overkill. For FS I would use its full 11fps ability to ensure I get a great exit shot. The A5000 shoots slower, is lighter, and the card loads from the side. IMO the Sony A5000 and A6000 are the best options.
  13. I currently have the A6000, somebody else at the dz has an A5000 (bought at my recommendation). If the camera is strictly for tandems and the occasional fun jump the A5000 is more than sufficient IMO. The A6000 has super fast auto focus, but its almost over kill the A5000 is plenty quick enough. The A5000 is lighter and the SD slot is on the side which is a huge advantage, the A6000 unfortunately loads from the bottom by the battery. Again just my opinion, if its just for tandems the A5000 is just about perfect.
  14. I know I should RTFM but how do you bump the fps down? I recently bought an A6000 and am still trying to learn the ins and outs. depends on what shooting mode you use, then all you have to do is push the function (Fn) button on the back of the camera.
  15. How would an ND filter help here? ND filters virtually always help in high motion, outdoor shots. They allow for lower shutter speed, which helps in jello and shake. Contrast is also reduced. PolarPro makes a 2 stop and 4 stop ND for the Sony (and GoPro). wish i had known about polar pro. I bought a 4'x4' sheet and cut my own nd filter to fit inside the housing. Might need to invest on this clip on filters. On that note DSE do you think using gel sheet cuts down on IQ compared to using the clip on filter from polar pro?
  16. I have no idea if it would help or not. A previous poster was saying that an ND filter fixed his shake problems on a Sony Action cam, and he suggested it may do the same for a Hero when the Hero is set to the Med FOV. Chris Not so much shaking from poor mounting. But the shutter roll or "jello" you get in the corners. That is what is corrected by using the ND filter. A shaking camera is either a loose helmet or poor mounting. This is one spot go pro still has not got right. Its not possible to solidly mount the camera using the equipment they offer. The clamping screw does not prevent a forward or backward roll of the camera. It has to be mounted on a flat based mount or be pressed up against something to keep it from moving.
  17. I guess we see this a little differently. IMO narrow FOV camera demands you fly at the right distance AND you are able to aim the camera perfectly all the time. With a wide FOV camera you only need to fly at close distance, but dont need to really worry about aiming that much. One less thing to worry about. I think if I was given a narrow FOV camera to shoot tandems, I would most likely screw up my videos in the beginning. I definetly would have to pay attention much more than I usually do with a go pro. Paying attention is the whole point. Being a professional means more than just getting paid to do it. Close attention to even the smallest details can make or break a video. If you can't do it consistently then you shouldn't consider/call yourself a "professional". Selling a lesser product because the video flyer lack the skills or equipment to do a quality job says a lot about the operation and operator about quality standards. When I first started flying video I was pulled from rotation and told my videos weren't up to standards. I practiced and got my act together. I see videos that are accepted now that were WORSE than what I was putting out when I was pulled. But if whoever is in charge of video sales/quality doesn't care about consistent framing and quality of image, then you might as well use the smallest, lightest, cheapest camera you can find.
  18. I think its much easier to shoot a decent video with a wide angle such as go pro than with a narrower FOV camera. IMO Narrow FOV takes much more skill than wide. If one does not have the skills to stay close enough a tandem to shoot go pro, then he shouldnt be filming tandems to begin with. Narrow FOV for such a person is only going to make things worse in my opinion. IMO you have that backward. Its easier to be farther away with a narrower FOV and get better footage. The closer you are the more magnified any changes are. Narrower FOV means you can stay a little further back making changes less noticeable. However I do agree you must be able to fly your slot whether its 6 feet or 6 inches from your subject. What this boils down to, is shitty flying is shitty footage. You can hand a $10000 pro-sumer camera to a somebody who flys like crap and the footage will be crap, and vice versa hand a bad ass flyer a PC105 or mini 8 and they can get amazing footage.
  19. That looks great. Was the anti-shake option enabled, or just the ND filter used? Any GoPro'ers in Med mode? anti-shake mode limits the fov. With anti-shake on its 120 with it off its 170. So in that video its on
  20. And many poor outside videos have been shot with GoPros. Very few videographers are good enough to maintain the 3 foot distance required between them and the subject. That's what's required to use a GoPro in its native wide angle mode. Otherwise the student takes up only 10% of the screen, and you get a poor video IMO. So there's the option of using Med setting to eliminate the need for being right on top of the subject... but all the shots I've seen in Med setting looked unsmooth. People are texting in this thread about possibilities of smoothing that out, but I'd like to see a good freefall video shot in Med on any GoPro. Maybe the ND filter can help. Any presenters? Chris http://vimeo.com/115136461 Sony AS100V with .6 ND filter shot in med (120 degrees) wide is 170 degrees. Not my best flying (about a month layoff)
  21. So far about 20ish jumps on my AS100v cameras and they have worked perfectly. Adding the ND filter has completely eliminated the background jello.
  22. I solved the "jello" on my sony as-100v bu using a .6 ND gel filter. Quality is still perfectly fine. I have tested this on clear and overcast days camera handles it like a champ. I imagine if you are using a solid mount on the GoPro and use a ND Filter there would be no shake as well. So in answer to the OP Yes the quality is fine, however some adjustments are needed. The CX is far from perfect as well. EIS makes the shaking worse. OIS is pretty much dead and gone. BOSS is not on every camera. Also few of the CX series can use an add on lens. HD lens options are very limited. If you also consider weight and space needed that's also another notch against a CX. The cameras released in 2014 and hopefully 2015 is a crossover year where action cams are surpassing consumer cameras in terms of quality and potential.
  23. Its a very old eclipse. Rigger on site knows of the condition of the rig. The rig itself is owned by the dz
