  1. those poor cows would be dead or worthless...this case has already been going on for 21 years! If auctioned, the money could be held in arrears, or paid back with interest at the point of resolution. If the defendant was victorious he could also petition for a higher valuation. good info, thats why i was asking. Not sure how relevant this is. But there were reports of drilling looking for oil, and recent sales of BLM controlled land to power companies for fracking. Would seem to make sense why the BLM is in such a fit over this. If they have a buyer lined up this rancher is keeping them from there payday. No links at the moment to help this theory. I will need to keep digging.
  2. Technically the land is owned by the state of Nevada and controlled/maintained by the BLM. Not sure if the state of Nevada has asked the BLM to handle this situation or if the Feds jumped in. There are reports of the confiscated cattle either being killed and buried where they are found, or immediately being sold at auction. Either way, is that destruction of property? Even if he was found guilty isn't evidence/property supposed to be kept around until all appeals are exhausted?
  3. He should have stuck to shop lifting. While not good at that either (he was arrested) the potential punishment for getting caught is lower. Lets not forget he was pulled over twice for trolling for hookers in SF also. Hate that D-Bag with a passion.

    There were several RSL related entanglements from riser breaks years back. I believe at least one tandem was fatal after a riser break if memory serves me correctly. The riser breaks were a different initial problem, but the entanglement due to an active RSL was the same - a main that didn't leave combined with an RSL-activated reserve. Do what makes you comfortable, I guess. Maybe your out-of-the-box approach is the way to go, but it's certainly contrary to known best practices. All the best. In the instance of a riser break the RSL is not the cause of the problem, the risers are. That would be similar to somebody pulling low and having an AAD fire. Which would result in a 2 out and then blaming the AAD for the 2 out. The AAD worked as intended, its operator error. Risers generally don't just break. Is there the possibility of manufacturer defect? Yes of course there is, but most likely its usually due to the risers being poorly maintained or damaged. I understand what you are saying. Yes there are instances where a secondary system might bite you in the ass. However I believe most of those problems could be handled well before they happen. Whether its proper gear maintenance, making a helmet as snag resistant as possible, or simply thinking worst case scenario before you might try something questionable. Please don't take my POV as argumentative or trolling. I am speaking from experience I have been through or through instances others have been through. I am always trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can.

    The snag during a cutaway is a sequence that in most instances can be prevented with a little fore thought. Fix snag points on your helmet and there is then nothing to snag on. If I snag and then need to cutaway I have no problem losing the helmet. Bottom line for me is to minimize the snag points to make this a mute point. Both video and stills are not over hanging my helmet at any point, which makes it nearly impossible to snag. My ring sight uses the nylon screws and i know I can break those off no problem. Maybe weird its just my luck, but I have had my ring sight snag lines after clearing line twists (Flat top Pro). I have also lost a helmet after a my hand hit the helmet release while I was struggling with a rough opening and the resulting 360 launched the helmet off my head(Vapor Pro). I have since built a cover for the replacement helmet (Vapor Pro). Not sure where I was reading in an article that there are no documented cases where a RSL has caused a fatality due to main reserve entanglement. But fatalities of people trying to open reserves without enough altitude sure seem to be rising.

    Ok I think we are all considering different scenarios here. My biggest fear is deploying my main, and having it entangle my helmet. I jump a velo loaded at 2.2-2.3. If my canopy isnt symmetrical I am going on a ride quickly. If my helmet is tied up, I know I have to cut the helmet away before cutting away the main. Having your head pinned by entanglement sucks cause I have been through it before (I caused the snag kicking out of line twists on a crossfire and it hooked my ring sight). What I am not concerned with is entangling my main risers or lines with my helmet when I am already experiencing a problem. With my last 2 cutaways I had line twists pretty far down bringing the risers very close to my ears. By simply looking at my feet spinning on the horizon, I bring my chin down towards my chest bringing the helmet clear of the risers. With the centrifugal force building, when you cutaway you launch a decent distance from the main, which clears the risers very quickly. With the reserve being extracted away from you, the odds of the 2" reserve risers or the lines entangling are not something I am concerning myself with.

    ok to clear things up. I believe MARD and RSL are a good thing for camera flyers, and I jump with a skyhook. I believe a Main tangling up with a helmet is a much greater threat than the risk of a RSL or MARD leading to a reserve entanglement. My last 2 reserve rides were spinning line twists under velocities. I was using vector containers equipped with skyhooks. The cutaway and reserve opening were as planned and line twist free.

    As a camera/video flyer for a vast majority of my time in this sport, there is no reason why you don't want a MARD or RSL. My last 2 reserve rides were spinning velos on rigs with skyhooks. Cutaway and reserve opened with no line twists at all. Make no mistake, snag points are a much larger threat than a RSL.
  9. If you haven't figured it out already this sport unlike most in ALL about personal responsibility. There is no nanny in freefall. It's not a joke when we say "the only guarantee in skydiving is that you WILL land". Wake up to that or get out of my sport. So in your opinion a student should show up on day one knowing how to inspect a rig for damage and/or serviceability, or anything that happens is their fault? Somehow I dont think you really believe that. And if you do then I pray to God you dont own a DZO. Flores was not a student, he was cleared to self jump master. This is an adult sport. If you don't know something or have a question about the equipment be an adult and ask for help.
  10. Just to give the people in this thread some clarity. Everybody who rents from that DZ is told DO NOT freefly/ backfly in rental/student gear. IF I recall correctly from conversations I had with people that were there that day, Flores had chatted about his recent backflying in the tunnel. The rig in question is an eclipse with "walrus teeth" for the main flap. The velcro that was worn, was the holdover from when it was converted from a leg throw out to BOC. The velcro itself is covered (meaning there is a strip of hook on top of the strip of pile or vice versa). That rig is also equipped with a cypress 1. The FAA "official" that examined the rig, used incorrect terminology throughout his report. Personally I question a report written by somebody that does not even know the difference between "strings" and "suspension lines" on a subject matter he is "supposedly" an authority on. As for the thoughts of hypoxia. It is possible, that plane flies a lot of 18k loads. However the pilot is always on Oxygen and oxygen is available to all others on the plane. Almost nobody uses it, usually due to the plane reaching 18k in 10 minutes you really don't feel any affects usually.

  12. Find out what kind of plane they will be training from. Otter or Caravan are great. KingAir, Pac, Cessna, not so much. Fallrate can vary depending on size of teammates, most teams fall around average speeds. Framing a team is opposite of tandems, instead of keeping the chin high, most of the time the chin is kept down. Most important time for a camera guy is the time on the hill. You will need to figure out if you want to trail/peel or lead exits. That is something you will need to figure out for yourself. When the team dirt dives, dirt dive with them, work on where you want to be, think about if they are gonna drift apart, possibly slide under you. Find the burble are quickly as you can. When it finds you, don't try to slow down its a losing battle. Instead drive forward through the burble. Just a couple of things off the top of my head.
  13. well to be more accurate, usually its the reserve maximum weight limit you have to worry about. Most reserves are about 500lbs total (that includes passenger TI and the rig itself). Depending on the drop zone and the limitations of the Instructors some places will take you and some won't. My personal cut off is 260lbs. That limit is also depended on the physical condition of the individual as well. I have refused somebody 230, but took 250 later that day.
  14. Would that be like posting a 30mph speed limit sign in a town with no traffic cops, and expecting everyone to obey it so by your logic should that town not be allowed to own cars since they "might" speed? Or otherwise be irresponsible?
  15. I had a similar situation. I bought a pair of velo 84s new. One was having a lot of line twist openings. Sent it in for testing, they didn't like it and sent me a replacement very quickly. Always had great service from PD
  16. Most common exits are "E"(meeker), "H"(bow), and "P"(sidebody). I just finished the US Nationals with a pickup team (great group of guys). The used "P" all 10 rounds with great success. Of course this all depends on what plane you are exiting from.
  17. why scrap the car if you love it so much? Timing belts do have a service interval so they are replaceable.
  18. Just observation. Switching event days to sundays would mean you would not have to deal with fitting inbetween tandems. Plus I could go shoot vid too.

  22. Overall it looks good. "H" (Bow) was an exit I struggled with as well. The problem lies with tail trying to drop super low. In the end I decided following on the "H" was just cleaner. Your team seems to launch a little flat on the "H" as well, which lends to doing a following exit also.

As will the climb time to altitude. 2. Depends where you live. I hear Arizona is a little warm in the summer so I would guess that isn't much fun. Likewise I hear the midwest in winter is a little chilly
