More sacrifices to the 2nd Amendment

But let's say that we actually do start to reduce guns and cut the number in half, back to 80's & 90's numbers? (200 Million)  What makes you think gun crime is going to be any less than it was back then if we don't address the underlying social & economic factors?

Means - motive - opportunity are the keys to any crime.

Take away the means and gun crime will go down.

(And yes, we should absolutely address the underlying social and economic factors.  But just like taking the keys away from a drunk keeps him alive until he can solve his underlying drinking problem, taking guns away from criminals and likely criminals will keep people alive until we can solve those socioeconomic factors.)

But not necessarily for the same reasons.

You don't know that.

Exactly, but they are hardly ever the topic of discussion.  And when they're brought, people just tend to ignore it.

Because there's no consensus what those other factors even are.

Nobody wants to talk about the success of the (Biden's) aforementioned violent crime bill in reducing crime.

Because it's nowhere close to CERTAIN that the bill can take credit for that reduction. Canada also had a reduction and had no such bill.

And as already mentioned, it had the unintended consequence of disproportionately incarcerating blacks.

Nothing is certain, sure - especially if we don't address underlying social and economic factors.

But the focus on guns is because they have a proven, statistical LINK to violent crime deaths stretching back decades, there are available comparisons with other similar countries (to remove differences in social and economic factors), and there is widespread consensus that reducing them will reduce gun crime.

Guns are the (relatively) easy, low-hanging fruit to make the US a lot safer. And you can argue that social and economic factors are ALWAYS being addressed anyway - see the push for diversity and equality (which many conservatives oppose anyway) and of course the economy.

Unless...you're implying that locking up more blacks like the violent crime bill did is the solution to reducing crime? I really hope not but that's the conclusion you seem to be heading towards.

He has a very valid point. Make people feel good about being "responsible"... AND hold them accountable when they aren't.

Pfffft  responsible republicans! Let alone responsible gun owners. i hate to be the one to disappoint you but those cartridges don't fit that gun.

Don't take it personally but hoes and prayers are the only thing republicans can come up with.

Hi folks,

Tolerance is a word some people know nothing about:  A suspect - who fled the scene on foot - was killed by police when found nearby, allegedly still armed.

Man kills shopkeeper in US state of California after disparaging Pride flag - BBC News

I expect a lot more of this.  Thank You Donald Trump.  NOT!!!!!!!

The massive supply of guns joins with rage infused mentally disabled. A pride flag!....what others do in their bedrooms!... all a good reasons to kill and be killed. Just like the recent shooting of innocent Blacks by a White supremacist racist.

Yet debate on these issues is sidetracked by WOKE issues, trump corruption, etc. More fuel to the fire about how the US is on the wrong track.

In this case, I think it’s a euphemism.

Runions pressed the barrel of the gun against the child’s chest and pulled the trigger, police said she told them.

Daniels told police that she saw Runions take out the gun, remove its magazine and put it to Evangaline’s chest, but she turned away and didn’t see her pull the trigger, according to the warrant.

Earlier that day the child was being punished for eating the shooters food without permission and failing to act as her morning alarm clock. For which the four year old was struck with a sandal. The shooter had temporary custody of the child.

But they had a 9mm after all its Tennessee. In other news from this modern, progressive, republican state:

"When Gov. Bill Lee of Tennessee began a push in April to address public safety, his family was grieving the loss of two close friends, both educators killed in a mass shooting at a Nashville Christian school.

His call for millions of dollars to harden school security was embraced by Republicans in the legislature, who flanked him during a formal announcement."

Some one needs to explain to that woman that not all pistols have magazine safeties. Mag. safeties prevent the firing pin from striking if a magazine is missing.

Some one also needs to explain to her that rule one of gun safety is to only point guns at things that you intend to kill.

To me, this one is just a really good example of everything that's wrong with authoritarian gun culture. The expectation of perfection in someone else, using tools as an enforcement mechanism, the casual treatment of an already-born child as an inconvenience to be passed around, and the assumption that a gun is an everyday tool to be used casually. Of course, these are the same people who treat a 3000-lb piece of machinery as an extension of themselves and their egos (well, I do that sometimes too, but age is helping with that).

It's a complete lack of respect for machinery and other people, other than as a piece of one's world, rather than worthy of their own existence.

And she probably thinks abortion is worse. That child saw someone she was supposed to trust point a gun at her and kill her.

Last weekend we hit the 500th mass shooting in the US for 2023, when a mass shooting in Denver made the list.  We are now at 501.  We are very, very close to two mass shootings a day in the US for the year.

So . . . condolences?  Congratulations?  I guess that depends on what your philosophy on such things is.

Hi Bill,

I, among many others here, are closely following this:  Opponents of Measure 114 gun laws say case is about “individual rights” in trial opening - OPB

We're trying; just hope that the courts agree.

From Nebraska comes a heartwarming story of a gun at a wedding:

A grandfather who was officiating a wedding in Nebraska is facing charges after accidentally shooting his 12-year-old grandson during the ceremony, officials said.

Michael Gardner, 62, was officiating the festivities at Hillcrest Events in Denton around 5 p.m. on Saturday when he attempted to shoot a Pietta Model 1860 Snub Nose revolver loaded with a blank into the air to gain the attention of the wedding guests, according to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ben Houchin.

Gardner “decided to gain everybody’s attention and start the wedding with a bang,” Houchin said during a news conference Monday.

“When he decided to cock back the hammer of this revolver, it slipped and it shot his grandson into the left shoulder causing an injury,” Houchin said.

Now the bride and groom will have a great story, and the grandson will have a scar to impress women with!

If only his grandson had a gun, this would have never happened.

Hi folks,

The insanity continues:  One man was killed and another man was wounded in a shooting Wednesday afternoon in downtown Portland . . . at Southwest 10th Avenue and Alder Street, an intersection in the heart of downtown

1 dead, 1 wounded in downtown Portland shooting - oregonlive.com

It's early days, but it appears to be a road rage incident.  One dead & the shooter fucks up his life forever.  What a waste.

Good timing because at least the US Congress has a speaker now to deal with the needed legislation.

Mandatory thoughts and prayers? Or just the mention of thoughts and prayers on the house floor together with the wish for more good people with guns?
