Means - motive - opportunity are the keys to any crime.

Take away the means and gun crime will go down.

(And yes, we should absolutely address the underlying social and economic factors.  But just like taking the keys away from a drunk keeps him alive until he can solve his underlying drinking problem, taking guns away from criminals and likely criminals will keep people alive until we can solve those socioeconomic factors.)

Because it's nowhere close to CERTAIN that the bill can take credit for that reduction. Canada also had a reduction and had no such bill.

Nothing is certain, sure - especially if we don't address underlying social and economic factors.

But the focus on guns is because they have a proven, statistical LINK to violent crime deaths stretching back decades, there are available comparisons with other similar countries (to remove differences in social and economic factors), and there is widespread consensus that reducing them will reduce gun crime.

Guns are the (relatively) easy, low-hanging fruit to make the US a lot safer. And you can argue that social and economic factors are ALWAYS being addressed anyway - see the push for diversity and equality (which many conservatives oppose anyway) and of course the economy.

Unless...you're implying that locking up more blacks like the violent crime bill did is the solution to reducing crime? I really hope not but that's the conclusion you seem to be heading towards.

In this case, I think it’s a euphemism.

Runions pressed the barrel of the gun against the child’s chest and pulled the trigger, police said she told them.

Daniels told police that she saw Runions take out the gun, remove its magazine and put it to Evangaline’s chest, but she turned away and didn’t see her pull the trigger, according to the warrant.

Some one needs to explain to that woman that not all pistols have magazine safeties. Mag. safeties prevent the firing pin from striking if a magazine is missing.

Some one also needs to explain to her that rule one of gun safety is to only point guns at things that you intend to kill.

To me, this one is just a really good example of everything that's wrong with authoritarian gun culture. The expectation of perfection in someone else, using tools as an enforcement mechanism, the casual treatment of an already-born child as an inconvenience to be passed around, and the assumption that a gun is an everyday tool to be used casually. Of course, these are the same people who treat a 3000-lb piece of machinery as an extension of themselves and their egos (well, I do that sometimes too, but age is helping with that).

It's a complete lack of respect for machinery and other people, other than as a piece of one's world, rather than worthy of their own existence.

And she probably thinks abortion is worse. That child saw someone she was supposed to trust point a gun at her and kill her.

Last weekend we hit the 500th mass shooting in the US for 2023, when a mass shooting in Denver made the list.  We are now at 501.  We are very, very close to two mass shootings a day in the US for the year.

So . . . condolences?  Congratulations?  I guess that depends on what your philosophy on such things is.

From Nebraska comes a heartwarming story of a gun at a wedding:

A grandfather who was officiating a wedding in Nebraska is facing charges after accidentally shooting his 12-year-old grandson during the ceremony, officials said.

Michael Gardner, 62, was officiating the festivities at Hillcrest Events in Denton around 5 p.m. on Saturday when he attempted to shoot a Pietta Model 1860 Snub Nose revolver loaded with a blank into the air to gain the attention of the wedding guests, according to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ben Houchin.

Gardner “decided to gain everybody’s attention and start the wedding with a bang,” Houchin said during a news conference Monday.

“When he decided to cock back the hammer of this revolver, it slipped and it shot his grandson into the left shoulder causing an injury,” Houchin said.

Now the bride and groom will have a great story, and the grandson will have a scar to impress women with!
