Political Correctness Wins ... Halloween Canceled

Recommended Posts

Looks like political correctness has won ... again.

Halloween has been canceled. Children will not be allowed to wear scary costumes, they must instead wear costumes that promote "Caring and Sharing".

What is next? Outlawing winning from sports because winning promotes someone being better than someone else and in our politically correct "everyone is special" culture we just can not have winners and losers. Oops too late, some groups (likely the same people who want to take the scare out of Halloween) are also calling for winning to be removed from sports.

They did that in UK schools during the 80's. Explains a lot.

(And its not improved much since then[:/])

While both stories involve people/groups that obviously have a hair up their ass, it's more than a bit over the top to say "Halloween has been canceled", don't you think? One story is about a couple of elementary schools that have issued a "dress code" for costumes worn to school during class time. The other is yet another campus group overreacting to a trivial issue. So what? Just ignore them, paying attention just feeds their sense of self-importance. Saying "Halloween is canceled" is about the same as saying we'll all be forced to become vegans because three PETA whackadoodles protested in front of a butcher shop.

This concerns me even more than censoring Halloween Costumes. Winning and losing in sports teaches people valuable skills that can be transferred to other things in life. Losing in sports teaches people two things:

1) You can't always get what you want.
2) If you want to win, you need to change your tactics.

Both things that can be transferred to other aspects of life such as our careers and our relationships. But taking winning and losing away from children you fail to teach them how to accept when things don't go their way and fail to teach them how to adapt in order to get better.

Say NO to political correctness. People who want to shelter children from winning and losing need to be perpetually bitch slapped.

Dude of course Halloween was not cancelled. The headline was to get attention. But what is the point of Halloween when you take the scary out of it? We need to give children more credit. They know the "scary" side of Halloween is not real. They know the "scary" side of Halloween is just for fun. Too bad these politically correct dweebs forget what it was like to be a child with a shred of adventure still flowing through them. :S

They really should move Halloween to Good Friday... with all the death and gore and scary stuff.

The holiday is supposed to be a different kind of celebration... since it was just another usupation of millenia's old pagan and in this instance their harvest festivals by the "Holy Roman" church.

I don't disagree, of course, but the school system has much deeper issues than this. Comparing my school experience with my kids, schools today seem to treat the students as inmates, liable to erupt in a riot at any second, so they have to be regimented and repressed at all times. At the high school my kids attended, a new vice-principal brought in a rule that banned backpacks, lest they conceal weapons, drugs, or a cell phone (!!!), so kids had to carry all their books for the day in their arms. With that kind of attitude, plus no P.E. during the day to burn off some energy, no wonder so many kids can't wait to drop out.

I really do think school administrators have to have (as a job requirement) some sort of selective amnesia that causes them to forget that they were ever kids themselves.

>t's more than a bit over the top to say "Halloween has been canceled",
>don't you think?

A lot of people make a lot of money from claims like that. Look at the tabloids any week at the supermarket. Heck, look at O'Reilly's "war on Christmas" or Palin's stories about "death panels" that will kill your grandma.

>Saying "Halloween is canceled" is about the same as saying we'll all be

"Three PETA protesters protested in front of a butcher shop"

"US schoolchildren may be forced to 'go vegan' "

Which sells more papers?

Whoever came-up with 'political correctness' is totally insecure in themselves, lacks competitive spirit, has no grasp of reality, probably wasn't potty trained properly and is totally full of shit!

You make two very good points. Your points are even more pertinent when you consider the unrealistic expectations that are served up to children these days on shows such as the X factor and Pop Idol. Is it any wonder that not having learn't the important lessons that competitive sport teaches that we end up with scenes like this...

I would also add it teaches someone to be a good winner. To be gracious and non-condescending to those who don't always place first.

Some really good points here. To me, political correctness takes all that away. Kids need to know in growing-up, that it really is a 'dog eat dog' world out there and that you have to work hard to attain your goals. All this political correctness teaches kids is how to accept mediocrity. It takes away striving for goals and working hard for them and appreciating what they worked hard for. To me, parents who go along with raising their kids to believe there are no winners or losers, are doing more harm to their kid thatn the schoolyard bully.

Perhaps a win in a small sphere of influence, but looking at the success of J K Rowling's Harry Potter, HP World in Florida and virtually anything else connected to HP, the PC killjoys have a long row to hoe still.

Halloween has actually been canceled at this elementary school
http://www.calgarysun.com/2011/10/30/school-bans-halloween-costumes

But this one is worse.

A store was vandalized because the blood on the bed in the Halloween display looked too real.

IMO... Political correctness only makes people up-tight and forget a sense of humor. Too many folks are so afraid they might offend someone. I'm not saying that people should be offensive but people just need to lighten-up and get back to reality.

Chuck

I think it goes even deeper than that.
"My opinions are the only ones that matter and YOU are going to conform, like it or not."

Rather arrogant to say one's opinion is right and all others are wrong.

The funny part is that PC is now suffering somewhat of a backlash. Not strong enough to overcome it as yet, but many are starting the realize the worthlessness of it all.
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.
