Winning and losing in sports teaches people valuable skills that can be transferred to other things in life. Losing in sports teaches people two things: 1) You can't always get what you want. 2) If you want to win, you need to change your tactics. Both things that can be transferred to other aspects of life such as our careers and our relationships. But taking winning and losing away from children you fail to teach them how to accept when things don't go their way and fail to teach them how to adapt in order to get better. Say NO to political correctness. People who want to shelter children from winning and losing need to be perpetually bitch slapped. I don't disagree, of course, but the school system has much deeper issues than this. Comparing my school experience with my kids, schools today seem to treat the students as inmates, liable to erupt in a riot at any second, so they have to be regimented and repressed at all times. At the high school my kids attended, a new vice-principal brought in a rule that banned backpacks, lest they conceal weapons, drugs, or a cell phone (!!!), so kids had to carry all their books for the day in their arms. With that kind of attitude, plus no P.E. during the day to burn off some energy, no wonder so many kids can't wait to drop out. I really do think school administrators have to have (as a job requirement) some sort of selective amnesia that causes them to forget that they were ever kids themselves. Kids need to know in growing-up, that it really is a 'dog eat dog' world out there and that you have to work hard to attain your goals. All this political correctness teaches kids is how to accept mediocrity. It takes away striving for goals and working hard for them and appreciating what they worked hard for. To me, parents who go along with raising their kids to believe there are no winners or losers, are doing more harm to their kid thatn the schoolyard bully.
