That is nonsense. You "might" be able to use that excuse for Totenham 4 days ago.

The reality is that society is breaking down. Personal responsibility is a thing of the past and so is discipline. The sad thing is that I don't believe anyone has a solution.

This isn't about poverty. The kids out on the streets in many cases are from middle class homes, theres middle aged people looting as well as the youth. This is pure criminality.

+1

The police need to start coming down on these criminals HARD

that's what set them off in the first place...

In my day we were given a short sharp shock, took a while to put me back on the straight and narrow
but it worked, of course in those days the local bobby was allowed to give you a cuff round the neck.
and if I dared tell my parents that the bobby had cuffed me my father would have given me what for.

I really don't know who is at fault, but I do know that Socialism is 90% to blame.

I don't disagree. I think this quote from Spain is a good summary

Quote

The economic crisis cannot become the sole explanation for the violent outbreaks that are multiplying in Europe. Each case is different, but taken together they are bolstering the view that representative democracy is incapable of dealing peacefully with the growing unrest among citizens. It is a slippery slope that governments have to deal with, while scrupulously obeying the rule of law.

We have made the mistake of believing that people are mature enough and intellectually capable of managing themselves. It goes right down to not being able to discipline children.

I agree that it needs the ability to meet out swift discipline in the form of a cuff on the ear for youngsters.

That's interesting because I've just heard on the radio that the use of plastic bullets has been authorised if riots continue tonight. I'll try and find a link.

:DI just watched the chief of police say on Sky how ill informed the media are. Plastic bullets went out of fashion decades ago according to him. He also lashed out at the media for demanding water canons, saying that they only work in certain circumstances (dense crowds etc).

16 000 police out and about tonight.

Well some kind of baton round then. A quote from the most reliable source on the planet, Wikipedia:

Quote

Plastic bullets were approved for policing in England and Wales in June 2001. Plastic bullets were also authorized for G8 summit protests in Gleneagles, Scotland in July 2005...A plastic bullet was successfully used to disarm a hostage taker armed with a machete in Dorchester, England in December 2010.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_bullet

16,000 police in the capital and all police cells already full. Not to mention the trouble that's started off in Birmingham, Liverpool and some other places I can't remember. It's interesting to say the least.

I'm just wondering who the first person to be fired will be.

We have made the mistake of believing that people are mature enough and intellectually capable of managing themselves. It goes right down to not being able to discipline children.

it goes down to greedy politicians, bankers, press and the police...

What do politicians, bankers, press or the police have to do with disciplining individuals children? Ultimately it comes down to those individuals.

Hi to you too,

A baton round is a general term that encompasses rubber and plastic bullets as well as bean bag rounds, though rubber has generally been phased out in favour of the plastic equivalent as it is less deadly. The aim of them is to temporarily render a violent person unable to continue said violence which will allow security forces to either detain them or regroup.

Interesting article from the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-14459127

ETA: I also heard about the death in Croydon. I personally doubt it is linked to the riots though the shooter may have taken advantage of the general chaos to settle a score or something. Or maybe I watch too many bad movies.

i see a breakdown from the top of society spreading downwards. that needs to be sorted before all this twaddle about 'discipline'...

Are you willing to cut and paste some suggestions? Problems are a dime a dozen, but there is a premium on solutions.

This is the result of the 'look the other way' culture that successive Governments have encouraged over the last forty years in this country. With derisive terms such as 'Have a go hero' for citizens who have a sense of civic duty and the courage of their convictions. And labels such as Grass, Informant being given a totally negative connotation by the mass media for those who won't tolerate criminals in their midst. The country has no leaders anymore only managers and career politicians who know nothing of real life. To think of the poor buggers who died for this country and continue to do so only for it to become like this, its a disgusting disgrace.

Cut the discipline in schools, disregard family values, cut the police, cut the Fire Service funding, encourage a look the other way culture and hey presto we're reaping the rewards.
