Polygamy vs. Homosexual Marriage

Recommended Posts

Quote

God defined marriage in the beginning as an intimate relationship between one man and one woman (actually with the intent of displaying what a relationship with Christ should be like). What man has done with it (even as described throughout the historical accounts in the Bible) is another story. Man may change his definitition of marriage...but God has not.

So, explain why your god did not marry Mary before/after knocking her up and disappearing for about 30 years if marriage is so important to him.

Marriage has almost always been defined throughout history as a union between one man and one woman.

Lately, there has been a trend towards legalizing homosexual marriages, whereby a union can be recognized between two men or two women.

So with all this redefining of marriage going on, isn't it time to also legalize polygamy - a union between multiple partners?

If two homosexuals can marry each other, why can't one man have a marriage with two women? This is already a recognized practice in many parts of the world. Who is the government to tell willing adults what kind of marriage vows they should be allowed to enter into? As long as everyone is a willing partner, it seems to me that the door has been opened, and it should be just about "anything goes" now. I say it's time to legalize polygamy.

Your on the loosing end of history. Just in the last 10 years, public opinion has shifted in favor of Gay marriage.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_opinion_of_same-sex_marriage_in_the_United_States

Using the bible as an example as to why there should be no Gay marriage is akin to how the south used the bible to justify slavery. Just like through the vast majority of human history there was slavery and all sorts atrocities, legacies are not always good things Leaving behind practices that started in the bronze age are probably a good thing.

The polygamy argument is pretty weak, i'm surprised you didn't use the old " I should be able to marry my sheep" argument.

Why does it have to be polygamy vs. homosexual marriage? Why couldn't there be homosexual polygamist marriages? ...or any other combination for that matter? Also, as far as polygamy goes ....who in their right mind would set themselves up with a such a potential for a conspiracy against him to happen? I dunno ...just sounds nuts to me.

Some will put it as a one vs the other choice, but I think of it as just recognizing the result. Not complaining about it, just stating it.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

It seems far too many people can not abide with other people being able to do things that they themselves are not interested in.. A friend posted this... just something to think about for those who are so fucking adamant about their second amendment rights and taking away the rights of others to persue happiness.

Don't like gay marriages? Don't get one.. Don't like cigarettes ? Don't smoke them.. Don't like abortions? Don't have one.. Don't like sex? Don't do it.. Don't like drugs? Don't take them.. Don't like porn? Don't watch it.. Don't like alcohol? Don't drink it.. Don't like guns? Don't buy one.. Don't like your rights taken away??? Don't take away someone else's.

Maybe, but it has only been in recent centuries that people have chosen to bring the GOVERNMENT into it. We didn't always have government-issued marriage licenses. If you want to preserve traditional marriage, then do so, but just don't use the government.

I'm not against gay marriage - where did you get the idea that I was? Oh yeah, you just made it up.
I didn't use the bible - where did you get the idea that I did? Oh yeah, you just made that up to.

Ah, but you see, in many states they have "common law marriages". After a couple has lived together with each other for a certain number of years, the state considers them to be married, even though the couple themselves do not. So even though they follow your advice and choose not to get one, the state gives them one anyway.

So don't live together in a state that has common law marriages.

Edit: After reading a bit about this, it sounds like the couple has to present themselves as being married in order for a common law marriage to exist, so I don't think it's true that the government just gives them one when they don't want one.

Fine by me. In a society that touts freedom of religion, those religions that support polygamous and same sex marriages between consenting adults should be allowed to conduct them.

OK .., wait a second here.., Pajarito, do you really believe that you know Gods' intent?

And doesn't the Christ have a relationship with countless individuals? Is that the example God intended Man to emmulate ? So polygamy is ok with God?

Same sex marriage? Meh, sure make it legal, why not.

Polygamy -- hell yeah! I'll take that one to the streets. Should be legal by all means.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

No, they don't. That's what I'm saying. If say, the brother sister pair each have a recessive negative gene, they have their children have the same chance of being AA, Aa, aa (25/50/25) as any other general population couple with the same traits

So.... You think 2 Chihuahuas have an equal chance of producing a Labrador Retriever pup as a couple of random strays?

That's some pretty optimistic odds.

Can you explain why the most financially productive plants and animals are not continuously bred with their siblings then?

Why is it necessary for breeders to introduce extraneous stock?

Because the genetic material remains the same. Same benefits, same defects. Defects aren't magically introduced just because a sibling pair has kids.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH

It’s all about rights... you either believe in them for everyone equally.. or you don't... by your name.. I would have thought you understood that. Generations of Americans have fought for those rights that were called inalienable rights by the founding fathers( even if they did not view Women or blacks as equal).

Simple... do not expect those rights, if you are not willing to celebrate those same rights for all of your fellow human beings. IF you are willing to deny some of the rights you wallow in daily from anyone else then it is YOU who is living in a rather skewed sad PHALACIOUS world.

I guess that ignorance is indeed bliss.:S:S:S:S:S

My cousin certainly can't marry the man he has been in a loving stable relationship with for 33 years. If one gets sick... the other since he is not family can and has been excluded by hospital staff... the list is ENDLESS of the rights that they do not have because of the bigoted assholes who run their state government..
