Gunfire drowned a Pretoria mother's pleas as she was forced to watch a gang of hijackers beat and then shoot her one-year-old daughter through the back of the head, execution-style.

What was meant to be a night of celebration for the Rawstone family turned to a night of agony, horror and death for three people.

Driving through Sunnyside on Thursday night to take her daughter, Kayla, for her first birthday supper, 24-year-old Janine Drennen and her mother-in-law, 52-year-old Heyster Rawstone, were attacked by three heavily armed men.

Begging for their lives, Drennen managed to SMS her fiance, Clifford Rawstone. The first SMS read: "Hijack". The second: "Call Cops".

'It looks as though the killings were committed out of lust and hatred'
Phoning his fiancee's cellphone, Rawstone listened in terror for more than 90 seconds to men screaming and hitting Drennen before there was dead silence.

The attackers are believed to have spotted Drennen frantically sending the SMSs to Rawstone, because when her body was found nine hours later in Hammanskraal, parts of her face had been smashed in.

Police believe the hijackers turned on Heyster, venting their anger by shooting her through the neck before dumping her body in an area north of Pretoria.

A frantic Rawstone phoned the Sunnyside police station.

Placing a full alert to all SAPS vehicles and Tshwane metro police vehicles, authorities raced to block off all entrances and exits from the city. But the hijackers managed to slip past.

'This is definitely one of the most gruesome murders we have ever come across'
They drove Drennen and Kayla to Hammanskraal and on the way abducted a 16-year-old girl who was walking home.

Police spokesperson Captain Piletji Sebola said the men drove the two women and Kayla to an empty field where they repeatedly raped and beat them.

The men opened fire on the three, shooting Kayla through the head and back, Drennen through the leg and the girl through the mouth. They fled in Drennen's car leaving the three for dead.

"The teenager, who survived, crawled to a nearby house for help. She was rushed to Jubilee Hospital," Sebola said.

He said a police patrol found the hijacked car two kilometres from where the killings had taken place. A revolver, believed to be the murder weapon, was found inside the car.

Sebola said a team of detectives from the Pretoria and North West Province serious and violent crimes units were working flat-out to catch the killers.

"It looks as though the killings were committed out of lust and hatred," said one detective.

"Information given to us from the girl revealed that the hijackers apparently forced Drennen to watch them kill her baby before murdering her. This is definitely one of the most gruesome murders we have ever come across."

Even by South Africa's standards this is particularly cruel and brutal. Capital punishment would be too good for scum like this. >:(

I like to think there's good in everyone... but I don't see how there could be a single shred of humanity in those hijackers. What on earth can turn people into such abominable monsters?
:(

Condolences to Clifford Rawstone- wife, mother and daughter gone in one fell swoop.

:(:(

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

I was thinking along those same lines.

As in with the trade center bombings...I think that Osama should be cut into as many pieces as the number of people that were killed or injured...Surely we can find suitable punishments for these terrorists.

There was no reason for this crime. They should be tortured in just as cruel ways and then left for the birds to pick at them... Some peopl...

Agreed. It would be great someone who's read this in the news and feels the same will find these guys first and take care of it.

When these guys are caught, I would take a rusty jagged razor blade and make slits in their penises and other area's of the body and dunk them into a septic tank, then display them hot sun for a day or 2, then take them down and drag them behind a car, naked until they were dead.

There are some truely sick, evil MF'ers out there.>:(

OMG! This is just terrible! I am a father of a 1 year old, and I could not even imagine this! This has got to be one of the worst things I have ever read.>:(>:(

My heart goes to the family of the victims.

I am glad I am in America. It is at least somewhat safe here, regardless of who is in charge of the masses.

I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it.

Senseless acts like these occur every day in good old South Africa. We average about 20 000 (twenty thousand) murders a year.

There is something seriously wrong with this society.

By the way the 'suspects' where caught the next day. They were turned in by the local community.

Along with 600 HIV-related deaths in South Africa every day... :|

BTW criminals who are HIV-positive probably don't give a shit about the law or going to prison - they already have a death sentence.

I understand why people rely on kangaroo courts for justice when the legal system fails them so miserably. Most people (of every race) in SA favour bringing back capital punishment - why won't the ANC change the constitution?

I don't know how many people here remember Taya Weiss (here, here) and her appeal for help at the end of 2001. I bought some raffle tickets and received fairly regular emails updating everyone on her progress and what she was doing - it was eye opening stuff. Her accounts of what she saw and experienced were beautifully written, interesting, thought provoking and often very sad. They ought to be preserved somehow, if I can find them all I will (with her permission) post them here.

No ... I don't think you can carry your gat into south africa ( how ya gonna get it on the plane, when in america they are even worried about laptops).
But hey find out if you really wanna.

Yes South Africa has some Huge problems with crime, we have problems with HIV as well and many more, but lets be realistic... what country does not have problems ??

We have been democratic for a little over 10 years and it will take time for our country to come right eventually.
whilest I am not saying ppl are not entitled to opinions and views, I will say that you have to look at the issue fairly.

(yes - this was a horrendous deed, and the culprits deserve a Extremely harsh punnishment), but this kind of cruelty is an isolated incident. ( and no I am not denying that ppl are hijacked and robbed etc) all I am saying is that South Africa IS NOT that bad.
Crime is down - yes it is still High, but less than before ( Thanks to understaffed, underpaid and under equipped POLICE FORCE).

( Man is barbaric and barbaric acts happen all over the world to name a few - Liberia, Israel, America and England - No one is 100% safe from Harm)

I am Not trying to be condosending ( I am Proudly South African) Come Over and see The country for yourself, It is deffinatley The most beautiful country in the world.
Peace Be Da Journey

So far as I know, you can.. but the paperwork is as tedious and beauracratic as it can possibly get.
It helps a lot if you can convince the customs authorities that you're here to hunt with it (a scoped 44.Magnum would work), tourists on hunting safaris with their own weapons are quite common.

Your real problems would start if you actualy shot someone with it, no matter how watertight your case is. Your best bet would be to head for your nearest US embassy if you did take out someone. They could then deal with the local authorites on your behalf.

I have lived in South Africa all my life with most of those years spent in Pretoria, the city where this incident happened. I would say that staying 'safe' in South Africa has more to do with being vigilant than being armed.
I have carried a firearm (Glock 21) on me 24/7 for the last 5 years and I have never yet been in a situation that required it's use.
Safety-concious people avoid certain places at certain times of the day, drive with their car doors locked (and frequently look in all their mirrors - especialy at intersections), secure their homes with elaborate alarm systems and very often hire private security companies to patrol their neighborhoods.

It's an altered lifestyle and a costly inconvenience, for sure, but emigration is just not an option for most of us either. [:/]
