What the hell??

Ok so I'm booking a trip to Texas in April.. was looking at plane tickets... $285 round trip for Delta (beating Southwest by $92, which is a surprise)

So just for shits and giggles I checked first / business class. $1084 for the same flight leaving the same day. I've never flown first class but what exactly is the extra $700 for? I see that first class gets "refreshments" and coach gets jack, but that is a damn expensive coke / pepsi. So what am I missing? You get to board first and leave first and maybe 4 inches of leg room. For prices like that, it seems the first class people are the ones paying to actually get the plane on a call and in the air. Apparently seating location denotes the price of fuel for that day. :D

i'm fine flying coach, I was just wondering what reasoning / justification they had for making the price that much more

1) They don't need any reason.

2) They charge the price the market will bear.

3) If the market won't bear that price, there will be empty seats and they'll use them to reward their most frequent customers, the ones who buy tickets every single week and not always at deeply discounted prices.

I've seen business goonies that fly first class from my Company and I asked them why. Same type of story as to why people get private jets - "When we land, we don't have time to wait for unboarding of all the rows in front of us. We have waiting for us and we just need to run"
So, and extra 2 minutes of boss time ==$700? I think if you want to piss away money like that, you can use status for any justification.

Notice how most airways are going to all coach seating.. Only a few still have a 'first class'

Having done alot of cross atlantic travel - it is worth the money IF business class has the sleeper beds rather than seats. I have done London->Texas->London in 24 hours for a 3 hour meeting/engineering handover. I wouldn't have done it if I had needed to spend 7 or 8 hours with my knees around my ears.

I can't see the justification on short haul fights other than stroking your ego. Similarly I've been upgraded on AA and they didn't have sleeper beds just about a 2 foot gap between seats which I would not pay for.

I have had worse than that.

Old fat bald gay white bloke giving me his number and a big black lady clicking her fingers to some headphones music and nudging me with her elbow saying "You jammin?"

First Class/Business Class is great when your company pays for it. There is no way that I would spend that kind of money out of my own pocket on it though.

Earbuds work just fine for eliminating the noise from the crying babies. I once sat in the middle of these two extremely overweight people though. That was pretty uncomfortable, but at least they had good hygiene.

You forgot to mention that private jets are f*cking awesome! Ha ha ha! If you have the means, why not? For now, I'll stick to my luck of the draw coach seats[:/]

Ever been on a train in Mexico? I had a first class seat (looked just like a third class one on a Canadian train). Paid WAY more than the people on the lower class ones with the wooden benches. I am sure many people thought I was crazy spending that kind on money for a bit more room on a train arriving at the same time as their car.
Besides almost all business class passengers are deducting the travel expenses. Your taxes are helping purchase their $700.00 beverage.

You also get more elbow room for that $700.;) The seats are 4 to a row instead of 6.

I've been upgraded to 1st class a couple of times, and it's very nice, but I never pay the extra to fly that way. Most I know in first class are charging it off to the company or are using f/f miles to upgrade.

I've heard that some Asian airlines offer business class for not toooo much more on some long flights. I might pay $200 more each way to stretch out and sleep on a 14 hour flight to Bejing or Bakngkok.

Kinda like tandems keep our boats a-floatin'.

I prefer Coach class...you meet more interesting people instead of the usual ego-driven, holier-than-thou in 1st Class.

OTOH, you occasionally get the stinkin' bozo, too.
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Welll, as I am the occasional stinking drunken bozo (especially AFTER I finish my upcoming two weeks bumming it at a certain DZ), there was no reason not to book a second class ticket, even for a ten hour flight. In any case, I'll be looking forward to meeting these interesting people you are referring to.
