Not quite true - they sell Trunking Scanners, that work just like the radio in the squad car, etc. I have an old Radio Shack Pro-95, got it off Ebay for about $40 over 5 years ago. It's a trunking scanner, but also can be used on the 800mHz system as well. I hear everything on my scanner that I hear when on duty at the ambulance station. It also runs on batteries. If I put the new AA lithium duracell's in, it runs for about two months with it being on for about 10 hours a day (I listen at work with earphones, since I'm not allowed to have my pager on to let me know when dispatch needs me - the joy of being an officer...) If you go to Radio Shack or some other radio store, they can hook you up nicely, and will even program all of the frequencies in for you so you don't have to input them one by one. Are you planning to go out alone? Or are you chartering your dives? I've been to Cozumel about a dozen times now, and all but twice I went with a charter from the island...and that way, you are ensured of a good dive. The two we did ourselves were hectic, having to plan for retrieval with the current and all. The ones that were with a dive operator were great! They do all the pre-planning, they take care of your gear in between dives (switching tanks, etc.) and they know what sites are prime for the weather conditions. I would recommend just contacting one of the many dive operators on the island (most are located at the resorts, but anyone can go on the dives...) and sign on there! How are you planning to paint it? Brush? Airbrush? Spray can? It makes a difference... If using an airbrush, use Createx AutoAir - you can spray it right over top of the existing clear (just clean the helmet first...) and then just spray another clear over the paint job. I use it on my motorcross helmets and have never had a problem with it. If you just want pinstriping, I've used One Shot urethane paints with good success. My suggestion is visit a local art store or an auto paint shop. They can point you in the right direction. I'm an EMT-B in Maryland - so I know the "on duty with nothing to do" feeling. I'm thinking of going for my paramedic in the Spring, but it would require a career change, and I don't know if I'm stable enough for that at the moment...it would also mean a pay cut, so again, not sure if I want to go that route. I am very recently single again, after 4 years of being married to whom I thought was my soul mate. As time passed, it became obvious she was more in love with the idea of a wedding than the idea of a marriage...and therefore, there wasn't much room left to love me. Check www.galls.com - it's a "fire and EMS" supply catalog that my station uses all the time. Their prices are decent, and they have a LOT of fun stuff.
