Air France Jet Missing

Recommended Posts

The aliens like to suck energy from the storms, I think the jet encountered them and they did something to it...

"signaling electrical circuit malfunction."

"Lightning issues have been considered since the beginning of aviation. They were far more prevalent when aircraft operated at low altitudes. They are less common now since it's easier to avoid thunderstorms," said Bill Voss, president and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation in Alexandria, Va.

He said planes have specific measures built in to help dissipate electricity along the aircraft's skin.

"I cannot recall in recent history any examples of aircraft being brought down by lightning," he told The Associated Press.

Most likely an alien job of some sort..

"Flight - try SCE to AUX."

Yeah, but Air France doesn't have John Aaron as a flight controller (EECOM actually). And how many other NASA geeks are here to understand that one?

This looks real bad. Extreme turbulence in the storm, electrical problems, and the plane is fly-by-wire.
It probably wasn't a lightning strike, the planes are protected against that,

I just hope they find the debis field. I cannot imagine trying to find that thing. Where would you start? It doesn't look good. I just hope it happened quick so the people didn't suffer.

If it ain't Boeing, I'm not going.

AF has been having trouble with there 777's also. 4 inflight shutdowns in one month tends to have a negative effect on your ETOPS.

1) I can not believe how glib some of you heartless bastards are. Hundreds of people just died. Grow up.

2) I doubt this is electrical or engine related. My guess is we're looking at an in-flight breakup.

I heard this particular A330 had GE engines.

Ref your statement, are the shutdowns on the 777 primarily RR engines?

Edit to add: Agree with Quade on probable cause.

I have no problem running twins over the pond. They just had a bad streak with shutdowns. I cannot remember the last shutdown we had on a heavy.

WOW! You determined that from watching the news that has given us no usefull information? You should go work for the NTSB. Your good.

I think they have a mix of RR's and GE's. Depends on what model 777.

I don't know what engine was on wing. I will look into and try to find out.

CNN.com

The story has been updated since I first saw it, but the original version said the plane "self-reported" both electrical and pressure problems.

Sounds like things went to hell quick then. I hope they figure out what the hell happened. The self report that they speak of will for example if I start an engine and it "Hot Starts" will uplink a message VIA ACARS to the engine desk. Before I can tell my supervisor what happened the engine deskis already calling.

Not you, but certainly the first response in the thread joking about "aliens." If you think that's not in poor taste, I don't know what to say.

I believe that people underestimate the possibility in-flight break ups due to turbulence. While electrical issues clearly were reported, they probably didn't bring the aircraft down directly. We'll see what the NTSB finally does say.

Here's something to think about;
Quote

The plane "crossed through a thunderous zone with strong turbulence" at 0200 GMT Monday (10 p.m. EDT Sunday) and an automatic message was received fourteen minutes later reporting electrical failure and a loss of cabin pressure.

That was the last communication sent from the plane, when it was about 60 miles (100 kilometers) south of the Cape Verde Islands, according to the Brazilian Air Force.

Hey, Paul. Al I'd heard was about a possible lightning strike and lost telemetry so I made to comment. I figured if it was down they'd get the ELP signal. Such was not reported.

They discussed heading through powerful storms. So I'd expect weather to have something to do with it. IF it hit serious turbulence a breakup could be expected.

I am constantly surprised and appaled by the level to which people can sink on a public forum.

ELT goes off on impact. If it impacts the water, it may be submerged. If submerged it's not going to be able to successfully transmit it's location.

The Flight Data Recorder does have a "pinger" on it. They'd have to send submersibles down to listen for and try to recover it. If it's deep enough water, that's going to be a tough assignment even for robots.

Oh give me a freakin' break! :S

What, we're all supposed to be 'Oh the humanity' and sing 'We will overcome' in unison?

We lost over twice that many people on U.S. highways over the Memorial day weekend, where was the outrage and the sympathy threads over THAT?

We on this 'public forum' jump out of airplanes, banter about sex, drugs and An-2's all day ~ and you're appalled? :D

Suck it up cupcake. ;)

I almost hate to say it, because I'm all for technology, but what I think we have here is the first true "fly by wire" tragedy.

We've all seen this Airbus crash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCwYAzqvcrQ which really didn't have anything to do with the aircraft, just daft pilots, but in the end I want steel cables between my hands and feet to the aerilons and rudders - not just electrons thank you!

Especially in a thunderstorm . . .
