  1. Homer: Marge, please, old people don't need companionship. They need to be isolated and studied so it can be determined what nutrients they have that might be extracted for our personal use. The Simpson's - Lady Bouvier's Lover (1994) Once a kid is born or is at a point where it can live with routine maintenance like feeding, I'll tend towards protecting it, but when it's the size of a GI Joe and has no chance of survival outside of the host? No real loss. cavete terrae.
  2. Trophy hunting is for vicious cowards. It's that simple. cavete terrae.
  3. "Just lay back and think of other things while you get raped, it's better that way" cavete terrae.
  4. What is lame is the de-valuing of life to the level you just did And I will leave it at that Devaluing life… you mean in the way that an unwanted child can ruin a life if someone is forced to bring it to term? Pregnancy is nothing more than hosting a parasite, and getting rid of that parasite can be the best life choice for a lot of people. I value lives, just not of parasites. cavete terrae.
  5. Hell no. I won't eat a main course that didn't have a face. cavete terrae.
  6. Who cares what happens to ANY human tissue after the person dies? God, move on. Cemeteries are a waste of space, cremation is a waste of energy. If we can benefit from the tissue in some way, be it scientific research or feeding sharks, why not do it? Sentimentalism is lame. As for abortion itself? Hell, the more the merrier. cavete terrae.
  7. I think I'd rather get shot than watch that movie, seems fair. cavete terrae.
  8. I've heard it claimed that mccain was a crappy pilot who only kept getting replacement planes for the ones he was crashing because of who his dad was. I have no idea if there's any veracity to this, mind you. cavete terrae.
  9. No its a stupid strawman due to circumstances. I was hoping no one here was going to sink low enough to try that one. I was wrong The fact remains that we're a far, far more aggressive force in the middle east than Iran is. They talk a big game, but we're a hell of a lot closer to "terrorist" badging in the region than any self respecting nation should be. cavete terrae.
  10. Worth noting we remain the only people to actually hold nukes over someone's head and actually use 'em. cavete terrae.
  11. If they managed to successfully build a nuclear weapon, it might actually improve stability in the region. After all, it's the only 100% proven effective (thus far) way to keep the US from invading your country. Probably would make the Israelis freak out, but honestly they're a bigger shit-stirrer than just about anyone. cavete terrae.
  12. I've been saying that for years. And to the other respondents, no, of course they wouldn't accept it from the US. However, perhaps they would have been comfortable exchanging civil nuclear ideas from, say, Japan. Or some other agreeable country that uses nuclear power-generated electricity. The bottom line with that scenario is that it gets SOMEONE with nuclear expertise into the country. Someone from/to whom it would be much more difficult to hide or misrepresent a militaristic nuclear program. Since we didn't go there 30 years ago, we found ourselves in today's situation. This week's proposed deal is simply a starting point for helping Iran come back into the greater world community. It certainly does not solve all of America's concerns (or the concerns of other countries), but at least it's a step in the right direction. Certainly we can agree that all these years of non-negotiable, single-perspective ultimatum has done nothing to encourage Iran to change its behavior, and has instead facilitated the growth of that hate rhetoric. Where's that option in the poll? Though to be fair enrichment is part of the "smart" nuclear cycle wherein they reprocess and recycle the fuel. We as a nation are stupid and don't do that, but everyone else should probably try and do it since ~95% of nuclear "waste" can be reused. That's something you don't probably want to be dependent on an outside nation to do if you can avoid it, at least conceptually. Politically speaking despite all the brouhaha over Iran being the devil and such, they are traditionally not the aggressor in any serious combat in the modern era, insofar as I'm aware. Might they have supported resistance against foreign invaders in their neck of the woods, and even have American blood on their hands? Perhaps (and I really don't know for sure), but when you step back and look at it, if someone invaded Canada or Mexico it's hard to imagine us sitting back and watching it happen without trying to make sure it doesn't happen to us, too. cavete terrae.
  13. I don't really see the problem. cavete terrae.
  14. It works both ways. I have had people say they "have an offer" so we give them a good bump up in pay to keep them. A couple months later same thing again. Some employees use this tactic to try to get more from the company. So anymore it is "Good luck with your new opportunity". As far as the 2 weeks notice. I have had 3 employees that gave me 2 weeks notice and then bailed out a week later. To me it makes more sense to just ask for a raise, and if they don't give it, go elsewhere. As for the 2 week notice thing… ugh. I've always given a minimum of 2 weeks, and in my line of work (systems administrator) I try and give more because I know how much of a pain in the ass we are to replace. Even at my last job, which I hated, I gave 3.5 weeks notice out of courtesy. Funnily enough, when I was laid off due to a downsizing 2 jobs ago, they gave me 8 weeks notice it was happening, and incentivized my staying all the way through. Not entirely because they definitely needed me for that long, but because it was just that sort of company. They felt bad enough that they were letting people go, and they weren't the sort to just throw people to the wolves (unless someone was being fired for cause, of course). cavete terrae.
  15. Man, that is fucked up. I've only had to truly fire someone once, and honestly it was pretty funny for both of us. I was a lifeguard at the time and one of my guards CREAMED this "kid" (he was about 13 or 14) with his foam rescue tube to get him to stop shouting profanity across the pool. "Hey, I need to see you in my office" "Yeah I know I'm getting fired for that but honestly it was worth it" "Fair enough. Reapply next summer and you can come back". There was only a week left in the season, he didn't miss much cavete terrae.
  16. In my opinion, the moment you say you're leaving they know you're looking to go one way or another, so even if they offer something to retain you to keep things flowing in the short term, they're probably going to start looking for your cheaper replacement anyway. cavete terrae.
  17. Looks like this will be my route! cavete terrae.
  18. Aw man, I'm going to be road tripping from Naples to norcal and I just thought "YES I can get a RAD cuban sandwich for lunch" but mean leaving hours later than planned :( Recommend La Tropicana on 7th Ave in Ybor. (full disclosure: my aunt and uncle used to own the place.) Also you could try La Septima in Brandon ...excellent sandwich and other stuff, too. Will they serve a cuban sandwich at breakfast time? cavete terrae.

  20. Make sure you give them a call along the trip. Do it in the middle of no where with shitty reception. Just like back in Oz. The funny thing about that is that it wasn't actually the reception that was the issue, it was the wind noise and the horrible codec used for international calls from a mobile phone. A decent headset and skype would have made all the difference, I just never knew it was bad until they mentioned it on the show! cavete terrae.
  21. What she said. I drove Austin to SE Alabama and back last year (thankfully broken up by about 8 months, but with a toddler). Torture. Pure torture. Even with interesting audiobooks. Best of luck to you!!

  23. Pro tips! I think Biloxi is gonna be the way to go! cavete terrae.
  24. So I'm gonna be flying down to Naples, FL to pick up a car in the next few weeks, and I'm plotting out my route and hotels. The original plan called for the first night's stop to be in Pensacola, but I've had need to make it either Tallahassee or Biloxi instead. The 2nd night will be Dallas, though. The question is, what's more boring/tiring, the 750ish miles from Naples to Biloxi, or the 850ish miles from Tallahassee to Dallas? cavete terrae.
