  1. Which has about as much to do with my post as Chipotle has do to with what I'm going to watch on TV tonight. cavete terrae.
  2. So they can let it die, it'd just be bad for business Why would expect a farmer to do something that is bad for business? The state really cannot mandate what the farmers grow, so they logically will look for higher revenue products (be it for local consumption or for export to Asia, which is the case with these nuts). So long as their water rights entitle them to nearly cheap water, there are no economic incentives to do anything but what they've been doing. An almond tree takes 3-4 years to produce at all, and 6-7 to reach full production. Very similar to wine grapes. So again, as I wrote, your only choice for a drought year is to either give up ~5 years of normal production and kill the tree, or to keep watering it at least enough to stay healthy. No one is taking option A, since you 1) don't know the drought is a one year or multi year event and 2) you don't have any incentive to care. Best case (and fantasy) scenario is that farmers pay the same cost of water as anyone else, but crops for state (and nearby) consumption are encouraged with subsidized rates. Then they will make economic choices that are compatible with the supply of the resource. I'm not expecting them to do things that are bad for business, I was just confused by the claim that "you can't let a producing almond tree die." Perhaps from a financial standpoint you shouldn't, but you certainly can. cavete terrae.
  3. If people don't want the neighbors to do shit they don't like, they should have bought the property themselves. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are happy to put themselves in debt for 20 years to have some shitlord dictate what colour their house may be painted, but I'm not one of them. cavete terrae.

  5. HOAs are the devil anyway. I hope that when the time comes for me to buy a home, I can buy one that doesn't give some group of uptight assholes the ability to tell me what I do with my property. Around here, though, it's kinda tough… cavete terrae.

Me thinks you must live in a dream world. Ronald Reagan compaigned on big gov't as being the problem. His very first act upon entering the oval office was to sign an Executive Order freezing all federal gov't hires. When he left office eight years later there were more federal employees than when he came into office. So there. Jerry Baumchen I'm not saying it's the root of all problems, but surely you don't think that the entire federal government is worth having around? I mean c'mon, the TSA? People keep trying to turn my posts into party issues. I have no allegiance to either party, I think they're both awful and I'd be ashamed to associate myself with either of them. cavete terrae.
  8. Everyone whines about the almonds, but alfalfa is responsible for more overall water usage and can be grown anywhere, whereas almonds from my understanding do particularly well here. Alfalfa grows anywhere and is only being used as a feed crop for cows anyway. But for the record, I'm 100% in favor of building large-scale desalination plants and modern nuclear reactors to power them. If Israel can do it, we can do it. +1...but we still don't need to grow as much almonds and pistachios as we do ("just because" isn't good enough when the resources aren't available). About 2/3 of the almonds/pistachios grown are sold to China (or other Asian countries). Further on alfalfa, I think read that a significant portion of what is grown also gets shipped to feed cows in Asia as opposed to our own. I wouldn't doubt it for a second. I don't really have a fix, though, due to the complexity of the water rights stuff, and I'm sure that plenty of these farms are probably getting subsidized so they can sell their goods to foreign countries as well. cavete terrae.

We *really* need a none-of-the-above option. And if none-of-the-above wins? That's the ideal outcome, yes. cavete terrae.

We *really* need a none-of-the-above option. I maintain that William Henry Harrison was the best president by virtue of not signing a single thing into law and having the good grace to die before he screwed anything up. cavete terrae.

Sure I can. I can also do it without a shred of guilt because my hands are clean and I know that I didn't put the current twatwaffle in office. I technically do vote, just never for a legitimate candidate. Now that I'm back in the US, I'll be participating because of congressional elections, though due to where I am I'm not 100% sure there's a point in that. cavete terrae.

Love her or hate her, at least we know she'd be capable of cutting off useless government appendages! I, for one, will continue to not cast a vote in presidential elections since every candidate continues to be terrible. cavete terrae.
  14. I've seen cops charged with "too heavy" of a charge before, and the cynic in me believes it's to be seen doing something, without worrying about actually putting a cop in jail. cavete terrae.
  15. He got arrested for making eye contact and running. Why would some one who doesn't have anything illegal on him run when he sees a group of cops? I did it once when I was younger just to see if they'd actually chase me. cavete terrae.

  17. And suddenly I'm reminded of the joke my grandpa told me when I was too young to get it: "Do you know the punishment for polygamy? Multiple wives" cavete terrae.
  18. Zing! But in all seriousness, I really don't see the point in blocking it. If I want to "marry" my girlfriend and my heretofore secret mistress and we're all cool with it, why not? cavete terrae.
  19. I'm with you, except that I feel any number of consenting adults should be allowed to have a civil union. Why not? Also, I'm a little more hostile because I'll say that the bigoted fucktards that are trying to use government to oppress other human beings should all open their fridges, take out all the shelves, climb in and close the door behind them before slitting their own fucking throats. cavete terrae.
  20. I wouldn't wish cancer on him, because cancer is better than he is. In the spirit of showing true bipartisanship, would you wish him to suck on a shotgun? (Just a thought experiment, nothing personal. )
