diagnosed with a severe herniation of my l5 s1 disk, did physical therapy etc, didnt work, started jumping which felt ok, got surgery march of 2011 jumped after i had healed. pain returned after i rode my bike again (used to actively compete in bmx) symptoms returned. got another MRI and it appears that i have reherniated. jumping doesnt bother it, but biking really does so i have stopped riding and started exercising a lot. the docs have talked about "spinal fusion" etc. but im not gonna have me any of that ;) ive looked into artificial disc replacements and in the next few years those might be a viable option for me. as for now ill deal with the pain and ive been put gabapentin which seems to have made my pain pretty much vanish. id recommend a LOT of core exercises (with the idea of making the muscles support your weight instead of your spine) and stretching a lot. so as of now im living with a herniation that according to my doctor "you shouldnt be able to walk" and my pain tolerance is "off the charts" haha but the point is get a few opinions, stay in shape and METAL UP! fair enough, just tried it once, but i agree!

i talked to wink about speeding up the opening a bit, and after talking to him i just let the nose hang when i cocoon it and it has been opening much snappier than before when i would split the nose and roll each side. its not comfortably quick the way i like it. the safire2 is an awesome canopy, responsive, awesome flare and great glide, the sabre2 is a little snappier, still has a great flare and is fun to fly as well. the pilot has awesome openings and feels great to fly. i dont think you can really go wrong with either of those canopies "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653

ive done it on a 182 day before, the only pain was that it was hard to get the earbuds to stay in when putting the helmet on, but i dont see that being a problem with different earbuds than the ipod ones that are usually loose in my ears. i freefell, heard my audbile clearly and tracked, opened and landed without killing my friends near me. oh and i clearly remember the music during freefall, it was pretty cool. people participate in numerous sports where they are required to be aware while listening to music. i take one to call my mom in freefall! haha, i just carry mine in my jumpsuit pocket, in case i land off and break a leg or such. there are a lot of fields out by us that are hard to access and it can be hard to tell where someone lands off even if you see them coming down. rather have one than wish i had one when im laying in a field waiting for someone to find me! not ridiculous at all? anyone who is serious about learning/has any desire to be safe would take the right steps to be safe. like wearing a helmet. once youve been around the block in a sport like bmx or skydiving for that matter, you wont feel as safe as you would with a helmet or other pads, and therefore will not help you improve as much. an AAD and a helmet are two different things as far as im concerned. an AAD is a last chance device that may help you live when everything goes to shit. a helmet is a daily necessity in a sport like BMX. ill bet a whole bunch of money, the op will change his tone when he gets a concussion (or worse) when he isnt wearing a helmet and being "safer" its a joke so ill treat it like one "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653

From my experience BMXing, when I wear a helmet my balls get bigger and try stuff that I would not normally try. With a helmet I get hurt a lot more than when I don't wear one. its not really about the type of container, more about the size of the harness. youre pretty tall so it might be hard to find one that will really fit, but i think some companies will resize the harness if you pay for it. again it might be hard to find one that will fit you but just keep looking!
