  1. thanks! sent them an email "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  2. ive seen a couple videos where people are freeflying around a fabric tube pylon and it is flying by itself with what looks like some kind of weight bucket and people can dock on it etc. it looks like a cypress is attached to the side of it (expired im assuming) and i would imagine that the cypress would cut a loop allowing the pylon to act like a PC and deploy some sort of round parachute to allow it to descend safely. have any of you done this or have tips on doing it? i would like to do it as a weekend project. thanks adam "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  3. i wonder if hard openings, or slider off in other types of parachuting would trick the sensor to make it falsely trigger often. what do you think about that? "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653

  5. ive always thought of it as the old "pull my finger joke". other than that not quite sure "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  6. already covered in the above posts i over generalized. i expanded on that response in one of my above comments. thanks for pointing it out though! "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  7. you know the ideal position in your head, so now whats left to do is practice it over and over having an experienced skydiver watch and correct your body position. enough repitition will build muscle memory. also focus on relaxing. if youre really relaxed youll have an easier time staying stable. 9. hitting the ground hard sucks. just remember that. have fun! "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  10. or just show you another way not to make a lightbulb and not that the wheel cant be reinvented keeping an idea simple is always best until we can get its improvement as simple as possible. theres a fine line between improving function and complicating things without reason. the unforgiving platform of skydiving makes this even more important and with enough jumps might even point out the flaws of a new idea more quickly. its good to want to stay simple but that doesnt mean smothering potential ideas. gopros are a prime example, before gopros (or other small format cameras) jumpers were forced to jump with more cumbersome setups if they wanted to capture a jump. are there improvements that could be made to the gopro to make it less of a "snag hazard" sure, but if we hadnt seen the gopro in its "snag hazard" form by it going through many jumps it wouldnt have come to anyones attention. now the next generation of skydiving cameras may address this problem. a byproduct of the reduced weight/cost/complexity is many jumpers who arent ready to jump a camera trying to jump a gopro because of its "set it and forget it" look. that doesnt mean it isnt a perfectly handy camera to use for experienced jumpers. its seems like some people just naysay the smaller format cameras in general because so many people do use them. im not sure just an idea. 11. agree 100% always asking questions and expanding your knowledge about anything and everything is helpful. i always tell the students i teach that there are a lot of people who are willing too give a wealth of knowledge, but there are only a few who are qualified to give it. 12. alright alright im sorry i might have misconveyed my point. what i mean is some jumpers know the basic look red grab red...etc and thats where it stops. to me a good jumper (which doesnt exclude them from dying) realizes that basic safety rules dont encompass everything that can happen. they extend their knowledge as much as possible to help them deal with unforseen problems or events and improve their odds. a bad jumper learns the basics and halts any pursuit of knowledge because they assume (wrongly) that the emergency procedures they learned is a catch all for problems in skydiving. they make no effort, through ignorance or just not caring, to expand knowledge, make good habits etc in order to improve odds. a good jumper never forgets that "the reaper" is there. they dont forget that at the end of the day you are exiting an airplane and will die if anything in the long list of things that need to happen goes awry. my initial response was not well thought out and i apologize for that "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  13. haha i realize that most of it is tounge in cheek, but just point out that these "fads" arent a bad thing, because they lay the foundation for future advancements, be it in cameras or skydiving hardware. some are also preferences rather than just fads (ie. go pro over contour) etc. haha "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  14. good: a jumper is placed in an unfamiliar stressful situation...they react to it well and save their lives. bad: a jumper is placed in an unfamiliar stressful situation...they die. "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  15. speaking of equipment i dont understand...can you help shorten my closing loop this weekend? "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  16. hahahahaha that was an awesome response. "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  17. lol this is funny, what in skydiving history hasnt been a trend? obviously ruling out the progression of rigs and gear etc. but even freeflying was thought of as a trend and before that RW was thought of as a trend. i own a micron with magnetic risers, a skyhook and a soft reserve handle. but that doesnt go on until i have zipped up my liquid sky suit and before exit i make sure my go pro is on...and blinking! but for real...outside of skydiving we are all thought of as idiots who carelessly disregard life, so who cares? i have the money/like to spend it on skydiving stuff that i find appealing and enjoy, be it a go pro, liquid sky suit or a wingsuit. the interaction i have with other jumpers who dont care is also refreshing. magnetic riser covers and skyhook are newer technology, which can be embraced very usefully. frankly i think its pretty ridiculous to blindly jump equipment that you dont understand, but people will always do that. gopros, and cameras in general, are pretty funny to see when everyone is asking "AM I BLINKING?!?!" but who can deny their usefulness in capturing fun jumps, coach jumps and rainy day activities? i wasnt sold on the pillow handle at first, but it has a pvc insert and for me doesnt feel any less safe than a "low profile" d ring. square canopies also have their place eg new jumpers, wingsuiting, camera jumps maybe? but an elliptical canopy is fun, which brings back to the main reason people skydivie. fun. overall who cares? shit my username is waveoff5500, its funny cause its stupid, just like goofy handshakes you make with your friends. i love skydiving and enjoy how i do it. if i cared that people might think different of me because of what i wear or gear i use, well then ive made a pretty ironic choice of sports. and if youre ever around ohio come say hey and compliment me on my jumpsuit because i waited a long time for it. 18. yooo brandon its adam g from AO! ill help you with some canopy stuff this weekend and get you squared away! you have the right idea though, practice makes perfect and it will come with time. shoot me a text whenever and we can talk more about it. rock on bro! cya soon! 19. dont whistle in! but i jumped naked for my 100th. its super fun and hilarious "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  20. as dave said the bigger pilot chute is key, but more so as a way to initiate the deployment sequence at a much slower airspeed. on top of the size of the pilot chute, the way the pilot chute is packed is much different than the way a skydiving pc is packed. also the freepacking and freestowing of the canopy and lines and the lack of a slider all contribute to a faster opening. on longer delays a slider made out of mesh material can be used to slow the opening down to a more comfortable level while still being pretty brisk. 21. yeah man come out to aerohio! ill be out there all weekend and if im not working ill jump on a load with you for sure. gotta get some freeflyazz in! "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  22. averaging since the beginning of the year about 40 a month, but realistically during the actual season lately weve been really busy and even between just coach and video jumps im probably getting 40 a month then including fun jumps (hop n pops, freeflying) upwards of 60+ "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  23. i used to jump safety glasses that were tinted then i bought a pair of batwing oakleys and have been jumping those for the past couple weeks. i have polarized lenses and have so far not had a problem with vanishing altimeter screens but apparently oakley has developed a new polarized lens coating that helps with this? (i use a neptune 2) and they are impact resistant. i know some people prefer to switch to goggles before exiting, but ive gotten used to jumping with them. they are pretty form fitting and i havent encountered an orientation where they are uncomfortable yet. (i primarily freefly, but ive filmed tandems, done tracking dives, regular belly jumps etc with them. hope this helps! oh and make sure to tape some elastic to each side of the glasses so they stay on your head during deployment. 24. It's not soccer man it's a dangerous sport some people accept that and continue and some don't. Some nervousness is normal so feel it out "its just a normal day at the dropzone until its not" 1653
  25. lol i think the beginners forum over at BJ is going to break with all the new threads! OP, just chill and go skydive and have fun. stop looking for BASE. focus on expanding your knowledge of parachutes, rigging, sharpen your skills with packing, gear checks, parachute flight etc. in all seriousness skydiving can kill you fast, BASE can kill you faster and neither will look back on you with any remorse.
