  1. Wow, can't believe this came from you. There's lots of room for us to agree on here... How about this - every child's birth certificate must have the father's name on it? That way, we can all hold the father responsible for raising that child. And, eliminating single motherhood would reduce poverty in America more than any other measure we could take. And, it would enforce the concept of a nuclear family, which is the cornerstone for civil society. What do you think? Naming the father is already required when applying for any form of federal or state assistance. States are already aggressive about going after these fathers for financial payments (which they should be). It is hard to see any meaningful difference in your proposal. The state can require financial support but it is impossible to make somebody be a good, active father in their children's lives. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  2. Not to mention that some prominent republicans have admitted the voter suppression is the entire goal of the voter ID movement: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/magazine/politics/105740/republican-voter-suppression-pennsylvania-id "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  3. I guess we read different things. As one example, did you hear about the woman convicted of this in Chicago recently? I live in the voter fraud capital of Virginia. Guess which party is doing everything they can to suppress the vote? http://notlarrysabato.typepad.com/doh/2012/10/harrisonburg-is-voter-fraud-capital-of-virginia.html "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  4. I came across that article independently this morning and came to post the link. A worthwhile read of great writing. Thanks for sharing.
  5. I called and asked them that question. It was about a year ago but I believe that was the answer I got. I do believe the offset changes at 100ft. intervals, so it would be 1240 and 540 in actuality. changing to student mode is not a good idea. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  6. Everyone I know that has experienced being born again knows exactly when it happened. For me it was 16 Mar 1981. The following is the Scriptural reference: John 3 New King James Version (NKJV) The New Birth 3 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” Ron, for this passage it is really critical to understand the original Greek language. Understanding the passage relies on understanding the double entendre in the Greek which doesn't translate in any sense in any English translation. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  7. From purely and age standpoint I would have no problem jumping that rig. It is impossible to tell condition without a complete inspection. The number of jumps the current jumper has on it does not tell me anything useful and I don't trust any oral history of a rig past 1 owner (and sometimes not even then). "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  8. There is some safety and learning value of using the same main canopy every jump instead of using different canopies (model, size, condition) on every jump. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

  10. Uhmmm? You! And, Marks right. Don't reinvent the wheel. Unless you want to pay more for pack jobs. Yes, the cost of the training/certifying/retraining/etc. would get passed down to the customer. Not really... it's labor with the only 'overhead' being rubberbands & pull-up cords. If the person doing it needs to spend some $ to get a certification, that's on them as the cost of doing business. If a packer is as competent as they SHOULD be - getting it is no big deal...look at it like a cover charge to get in an exclusive club. Pay a few bucks & keep out the riff raff! Bah, I'm skeptical of this certification idea. USPA is not in the business of this sort of certification. That only leaves the FAA. That would not be low cost for anybody and would get passed on. Absent that kind of bureaucracy it is local issue. Supervising rigger is responsible for those packing under his supervision. This should not be a regulation that is ignored. 11. In addition to your excellent points quoted above, An Advisory Circular is Advisory only and does not have the force of law. It could, however have a powerful influence in defining "industry standard practices" however. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  12. I guess child sacrifice is OK if God tells you to do it. http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/03/29/children.slain/index.html?iref=newssearch http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2325725/Nantucket-mother-Dora-Tejada-murdered-daughter-God-told-NOT-guilty.html You do know the word Jehovan is a bastard word created by combing the consonants of the kethib (YHWH) with the diacritical vowel pointings of the qere (Adoinai). It really has no place in anybody's vocabulary. http://www.holybible.com/resources/names_of_lord.htm I advise you to burn any copies of the Holman Bible Dictionary you have lying around. Learn Hebrew and stop relying on translated sources (in this case one of extremely poor quality) to teach you something about the Bible. Or don't, your choice, but you will look foolish using such language to anybody who actually knows what they are talking about. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

  15. And what would be wrong with that? After all it is what God told Abraham to do to Isaac. God had his own son killed by Crucifixion, which is even more brutal. Talk about not valuing life. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

  18. On the drop zone from first to last load with no lunch break? Not doing tandems while "supervising?" To my knowledge the FAA has never challenged one of my DZs' definitions of "supervision," although I expect a lawyer could with decent chances of success. I can only speak to the two dropzones where I have worked. I currently work at a 2 Cessna drop zone. I personally pack (rough estimate) ~80% of the rigs that get used for student and tandem jumps. When we are busy there are some instructional staff that pack as well. Some of them are certificated as well. If there is nylon on the floor being packed then I am in the hanger supervising (licensed jumpers packing their own gear excepted). The longest break I would ever take from that would be to go to the bathroom. Sun-up to Sun-down, usually with time to grab a slice or two of pizza from the staff room. When I jump it is on first load before there is nylon on the floor. We have a total of 5 riggers on staff at a small drop zone. When I am not able to be there one of the other riggers supervises the packing floor. At the other drop zone I have worked at there was always a rigger in charge of the packing floor. 19. The maximum size reserve the rig will house. I can't disagree more strongly w/ this advice. Yeah, why is that? Because I don't think shoving the largest size reserve that will possibly fit into your container is a very good idea. Too many reports of slow reserve deployment already. Those can't be definitively linked to container/reserve combinations but it is a leading theory that is at least one of the causes. When I need my reserve I want it to deploy fast and reliably. Also, putting the largest possible reserve size in there is likely to stress the container, look like crap, and be very uncomfortable. I never said, "...shoving the largest size reserve that will possibly fit..." The maximum size reserve the rig will house - as in the largest recommended by the manufacturer for that container. Let's recap before it drifts too far for the OP. First, one should determine their reserve first and build a rig around that. Second, now that the rig has been purchased without a reserve and that is the advice sought. Given an ~180# exit weighted jumper, And, that the main is a 190, it's highly possible that something in the 190 reserve range could be accommodated. Therefore, the largest the manufacturer would recommend - which would hopefully coincide with Airtwardo's and Michael's advice also - < 1:1 w/l I strongly prefer and recommend to jumpers to buy the "standard fitting" to the "full fitting" (UPT terminology) reserve canopy. It appears we will just have to agree to disagree on that. Doesn't hurt my feelings, as you are hardly the first person to disagree with me and I recognize that some would view that advice as overly conservative. It is somewhat ambiguous to me if the OP has actually agreed to buy a container yet or not. It is always my advice (again on the conservative side) to decide on the appropriate reserve first and then build the container around that. Without knowing anything about the jumper I would likely eyeball a 193 or similar size reserve, so we are all in the same ballpark there. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  20. It's a terrible idea. You don't want to be landing out in a backyard, after a cutaway adrenaline pumping, on the smallest canopy you've ever landed. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
