  2. Yup! I guess I didn't come across very clearly. If you can fly...and fly camera...you make a perfect alternate.
  3. I think you will be fine. If not, post the video link here! :)
  4. He may have been talking about horizontal coverage, not vertical. As you probably know, when chasing a tandem with a long drogue delay, or a formation that funnels, they fly horizontally away from you(cutting int to the hill). On faster exits, the distance they can get away from you, and the time it takes them to get there can be pretty quick. I typically don't think about tracking in those situations (tracking takes me up, not forward on the hill). I think about getting small and arching into the hill as much as I can. I think maybe the head down exit he mentioned would also have that effect.
  5. On paper, it looks really nice. I'd love to know how strong the buffer is on it. Always looking for the combo of fast continues burst rate, and the ability to use it heavily in 1 min of freefall. From what i've seen, the A6000's buffer is much stronger than the 3N. Would love to know where this falls in there.
  6. After every event, half or more the video guys get laid off. That is, for 4 way there is usually a higher demand for video guys, but as soon as 8 way rolls around there will be a surplus of video guys. It is true that there are many pick up 8/10/16 way teams, but most of those 8 ways are two 4 way teams slamming together, and leaving 1 video guy without a job. One video guy last year said we should make an 8 way team of all laid off 4 way video guys. Not a bad idea! Also, if you can fly at all... some teams need alternates and don't bring their own. If you don't get a video spot for 4 way, you might be able to do that. With something like 10 way, you would have a good chance of getting to fly (those guys get beat up!).
  7. I've been shooting mirror less for skydiving for the last 2 years. I shot an Olympus (micro 4/3rds) in 2013, and this year shooting a Sony (APSC). They have come such a long way! IMO, they are 95% as capable as a DSLR, and in some ways out perform. The only drawback for me is the glass. While the glass I have for the Sony takes great pics, I dn't have the option to use (at least not easily) the Canon glass I have accumulated over the years. Overall, you can get a camera for around the same price that will take 6-12 frames a second, no shutter lag, fast auto focus, APSC sensor, and weighs in at less than a pound out the door...
  8. I think you will be very happy with it. I'm shooting a sony mirrorless (3N) with the pancake 20mm. I killed my Exit Equipment plug, and soldered the 90 degree plug into a Conceptus tongue switch I had laying around. Note- standard micro USB plugs will not work. Thinking of upgrading to the 6000 next season.
  9. My first thought was he was doing that out of wishful thinking. If it was "stuck" at a high altitude, he could try to scrape together a shitty excuse, rather than having to accept that he just fucked up and almost died with his buddy.
  10. Keep in mind that a canopy that needs say 800 feet to open in terminal freefall, will not necessarily take 800 feet to open sub terminal. On a quick sub terminal deployment, you don't have the vertical velocity to burn up as much altitude during the snivel like you do when terminal. I tend to jump slow opening canopies, and can usually get in the saddle from a hop in pop less than 300 feet below the aircraft.
  11. I can't imagine trying to pack it that way would be a good idea. I would think the odds of damaging your canopy and/or causing a mal would be high. Some of the fly along camera setups are deployed using a line that is already run to the attachment points, and then clipping the fly along onto the line. Maybe something similar where you would clip the camera in, and hoist it up? Still seems pretty risky. I've seen some cool paragliding setups. One uses 2 disks about 6 inches around. The mount is one one side, and they stick together with magnets. You slap one on the under skin, and one inside the wing and you are good to go. That's a different animal though.
  12. I've been shooting with auto focus, and having really good results. The mounts I am using right now are 2 Cookie Flat locks on top, and an XShut on the front of a Flattop Pro. I'm not sure what would fit or work best with your Rawa. If you are using an Image, I would think any of those mounts would work. I like the conceptus tongue switch, but there are some other good ones out there too. I use a cross style ring sight, only because I've been told if I ever try the concentric rings, I won't be able to go back to the cross .
  13. I can't help on the Nikon side, but for the lens selection- What type of stills will you be taking? My main lens on my APSC camera is a 20mm prime. It matches up pretty well with my .5x lens on my video camera, and works well for outside video. I don't shoot tandems often, but IMO it works well for that as well. For me the prime is nice because it is small, fast, and I like the 20mm as a general focal length. The "kit" lenses can be nice too. There are times when being wider or tighter can give a cool effect. Attaching a few pics with the 20mm, and also some with the kit lens zoomed into 50mm. Attaching some tandem, 4 way, on level 2 way, and 50mm pics for examples. For really close inside footage, something wider than 20mm up through your fisheye lenses can be really nice. But you have to be close to keep the subjects from being really small.

  15. She's pretty! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152244532769220&set=a.10152244530114220.1073741839.622434219&type=3&theater Another 2-3 pics in there fwd of that one. They are making her pretty public right now. This was taken at a boogie last month. Shape seems to be less elliptical/tapered on the leading edge than the Leia. I got to see the tag and talk to the pilot a bit (PD rep). Nothing solid at this point other than they love it, and it will be ready for the public, when it is ready for the public.
  16. It had software issues too. My friend had video of a 2 out caused by an Astra fire after ~ 1 min of canopy time, during a 360 degree toggle turn at 1500 feet. The other big problem wasn't that they were too easy to turn off, it was that you had to turn them off. People forgot often and killed the batteries and ended up with a dead rig they had to pop the reserve on to swap out the batteries on.
  17. I'm using a NEX 3N this season, and I'm very happy with it. The shutter can be controlled using a micro usb connection, but apparently it is a non standard cable. I don't know the details but maybe Trunk or Martin can chime in. I'm currently using an Exit Equipment plug, soldered to a Conceptus tongue switch, and have an exit equipment switch as my backup. Exit Equipment sells their switch, and also an adapter now that will let you plug in a 2.5mm plug. They are both going fro around 80 USD.
  18. I think it is mostly just a skydivers daydream, but not something very realistic. If it is a catastrophic failure, getting out of your seat, getting rigged up and out of the door I think are pretty slim. I wouldn't expect a calm 1G environment with the plane straight and level if it was truly catastrophic or otherwise a situation that you would be better staying with the plane. I'd expect it to be pretty violent. They may be a few others, but the one that does come to mind where someone in the right place may have been able to get out was TWA-800. Wasn't super high, as I remember the wings stayed level after the nose left and it climbed significantly. Might of had the time and stability to get gear, and had the opening to get out of. In general when I fly with my rig, I understand that if the plane goes down I'll be just like the other poor bastards on the plane, except I'll have a special news story pointing out and questioning the irony of being the guy who died in a crash but had a parachute.
  19. CX150 with steady shot in active mode. It does crop a bit (takes a .55 and turns it into about a .8), but I think it is more than worth it for the results. Even with a FTP, the amount vibration is noticiable between Off/Standard/Active.
  20. Possible points for your argument- Unintended consequences- People will do other things to get the speed/thrill. I'd expect higher wing loadings, more down winders, and more aggressive turns/dives from lower altitudes. Many DZ's are separating out landing areas with turn restrictions in the main landing areas, but not in designated swoop areas. Maybe push for that?
  21. IMO- getting a bigger container and a more appropriately sized wing suit friendly main would be the way to go. Right tool for the right job, ya know?
  22. After this thread, I went back to look at pics from this weekend. My home DZ had flaps down on all the pics I could find. We had a visiting Otter as well, and at least in this pic, flaps were clean. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152244625189220&set=a.10152244530114220.1073741839.622434219&type=3&theater Their plane is configured a little differently than ours. Both have -34's but they have the 4 blade prop. Not sure if that matters for prop blast or not, but I did notice a few climb outs seemed a little bit more brisk than I was used to (nothing too bad though). I'm sure there are many more variables to what I feel out there and how it relates to actual airspeed over the wing...but in this pic anyway, no flaps.
  23. To be honest, I don't remember. I think the instructions of the Hypeye include the diameter. It is a snug fit, but I don't remember the exact size. I can measure it tonight if you need me to.
  24. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=143168; I mounted my hypeyes on the side near the front of the helmet. Seems to be plenty of room to under mount them there (thin aluminum (ok ok.. i cut up a damn coke can) strips secure them via the 2 screws you can see on either side of the hypeye. As far as where to mount the flat locks- Mock it up first with any lens or other setups you may be using to make sure you don't have the bottom plate in the field of view. I also wanted to leave enough space to mount a GoPro. This year, I'm using the gopro as the second camera, instead of 2 CX's.
  25. I think this data is based on this years cameras, and the 400 series is last years. I think there are people using 400 series cameras with Hypeyes. I know the 530 (this years mode) does not work. The 430-410 are 1-2 years old I believe.
