  1. Yeah no kidding, of course there wasnt really a need to track with all being rounds. LOL I would assume the exited at 10,500: not bad with having to do a formation load, not everyone being "out" for exit and that gear!
  2. Sorry I missed the actual day on posting but...... The 1st 7 way Star, also the 1st Texas State Record was completed on Sept. 14-1968. Jerry Schrimsher was the camera man. Attached is a shot of the Dallas Morning News coverage of it; "Aerial Square Dance" A couple of interesting "stories, facts, or rumors" from the way I have come to understand it. First: With only using 2 C 182's and little or no RW contact experience one can only imagine the difficulty of this (not to mention the gear they had to use). The story I have is that they had spent many weekends attempting this, one figure I heard was as much as 60 jumps (I dont quite believe that because that would take almost a year in many cases back then, making 3 in a day was great!) So after many attempts, they were ready to try again on the morning of the 14th, weather came so they sat down feeling they were done for the day. As to stick with a skydivers mentality the bottles of red wine were opened and they began to sacrifice themselves. From what I understand about an hour and a half later, guess what, the skies cleared! Well, they proceeded to do their own alcohol "self tests" and determined they were good to go! On their first attempt of the day they successfully made the first 7 way Star in Texas history! Ron Cox Sr. told me he believes that the wine helped them relax and that's why they completed the Star. Second: That evening my father took his unprocessed role of 35mm film shot in his awfully heavy Nikon (which we still have and works) to the Dallas Morning News building. Oh also remember that I am to have my first birthday 2 weeks later on the 1st and my mother is 6 weeks from my brothers birth on the 31st. They get there about 11;00 pm (yes Jerry drug Sherry around everywhere including the DZ on her due dates) and he was able to discuss the events of the day with the proper individual. So with out knowing how or if the camera got the shots he went on his way and jumped all day Sunday and to his surprise woke up Monday with his photo being front news! This is where it takes a twist in what may be the start of the ole rivalry between Texas and California skydiving. That photo was picked up on the "wire" and was published world wide! Stars and Stripes, and many other local and national publications from what I have gathered. Well, this created some issues for the Californians because they had already been doing 10 ways for about a year or so. They were upset that Texas got so much publicity on a smaller formation. Somehow thru all the huss and fuss the folks ignored the fact that it was never claimed as the 1st nationally, only in Texas (of course whats the difference?) This upset them quite a bit, especially since they had tried to get publicity back when they were doing 6 and 8 ways a couple years prior, but never really got the attention. It has been said that that photo is what truly started the 30 year or so rivalry between the two states. Ed Duncan (holder of a very low D number) attended the JSM boogie (first SkyFest) which was Jerry's memorable boogie. We printed that photo on the back of the event shirt, well seeing it completely upset Ed, to the point he approaches my mother during the ash dive about it bitching just like before. Now think about it, my mother is looking up to see her husband of 35 years ashes being released, only to have this grumpy ole man bring up something from 32 years ago. Now Ed used to be our jump pilot back in the 70's and 80's at our club so she knew him quite well, so she quickly looks at him,and says "Ed what the hell are you still complaining about? For the last time, we never said it was the first EVER, we said it was the first in Texas, for crying out loud! Now can I continue to watch this skydive please?" Ed stands there for a moment, lowers his head and walks away. About an hour later he approaches Sherry and apologizes and she accepted. We gave Ed an extra shirt for his safe keeps. We do not know if Ed went back to California and put an end to this with the other history making jumpers of that time. There are only 2 surviving members of this piece of history, Ron Cox out of Dallas and Tom Budd in (S Carolina I believe) I know Ron still makes a few jumps. The man tagged as #1 (base) was John Burke, father to Jack Burke (Deguello, which by the way, maybe the longest running skydiving team in skydiving history, over 20 years)out of Houston. Oddly enough, since that record, the Schrimsher's, or more important: SkyFest have been the organizers of 2 Womens, and 2 FreeFly Texas State Records, wasn't on purpose, it just happened. Interesting that our history says that the first baton pass was made on Sept 16 1958, 10 years later Texas finally gets a 7 way, think it was mid 70's in Muskogee the World Record 34 way was done, then again at Muskogee a 100 way in the 80's. Now we are on our way to 500 way attempts. There ya go, now ya know. Hope you enjoyed the story as I have over the years. I thought i had the shot on this computer where the grips were complete, but the attached are the ones that were published. Blue Skies to all
  3. Several species of small fury animals gathering in a cave grooving with a pict Ummagumma 10-25-69
  4. Lumbar is usually associated with the laterals being too long rather than MLW. But in sitflying having a MLW too long would produce a similar effect even if lats are correct. Then again so would the leg straps not being snug around the legs. But lateral length is the primary issue usually for too much "lift" off the back. Probably didnt help much did it? Maybe print an order form, have the person measured, jot the serial number down and call Mirage see if the rig is correct for that individual.
  5. Yeah, especially under a grand! You know, when you have about 9.85 left in your life, that's some pretty low margins to deal with at only a 120.......
  6. Yeah, once I informed PD that dacron with metal links and rubber bumpers did not allow enough room for the cateye on the steering line to flow smoothly once the slider was down, the told me I had to go with slinks. I dont care for them on my gear so they convinced me to go with reserve slinks. Have had no problems in the 2 years they have been on. Oh its a spectre 150. Hello Bryce!
  7. Except on hot sunny days in June at Chester, S.C. during a boogie. Sorry, I just could not resist. I tired I really did. And to the OP, go make a tandem, that should give you plenty of answers. And when you are done, come back here and tell us when you start AFF.
  8. Why do I keep thinking the CG was a major or a more sensitive factor for skydiving. Are they not known to stall easily? At least thats what my old memory is telling me.
  9. Here's a link: http://skydive-jamaica.com/ I wonder when it's opening? I'm a Jamaica freak, so it would put me on Cloud 9 if I coud've been in the country I love doing the thing that I love. Do you have a trip booked already or just looking for somewhere to go where you can work the skydiving into your vacation? Ahhhhh........ Red Stripe, Jamaican beef and chicken patties, beautiful Jamaican people... One Love! Ya mon!!! Remember, it's all irie! Ahhh I feel the same way, loved Jamaica! Would love to make a jump there. Iroy mon! J
  10. But I bet you have Type 17 risers (narrow). I believe that PD Hats are only for those type of risers. True? Wide Type 8 risers (which I have) should be wide enough to stop the descending slider by themselves. Correct? Or are there PD Hats for Type 8 risers, too? Yes I have the mini, I believe the large risers will stop the slider, but you still want to protect the slinks from the slider grommet. Its been a while since I have jumped with large risers so I may be mistaken, and I am sure your local rigger can cover the slinks for you if necessary.
  11. that is what i said after getting the canopy hooked up, apparently the size of the slider grommet has changed. PD didnt believe me when I told them my problem, so I shipped the canopy back with the risers on it and they saw my problem. My spectre is 2 years old, with mini risers. Reminds me of when mini risers came out, took one look and thought "are you kidding me?"
  12. Yeah, I actually plan to put on the Reserve Slinks (which are longer) to make room, since I will have a combination of thicker Dacron lines and wider webbing (Type 8 risers). Yeah I prefer metal, so I went with reserve slinks as well when I was forced to go that way. I have the PD hats or slink cover on them. Enjoy
  13. Just remember that you cannot use metal links with the rubber bumpers with Dacron lines, the cat eye will get stuck as it goes thru the slider grommet. Will need soft links to make the room. Dacron lines on a spectre are great! You'll love it.
  14. If they can't agree to an escrow service, they won't be selling to me. Simple as that. There is nothing out there that just has to be had bad enough to put myself in a position to be screwed. Which is why sending money first is not a good idea...ever. Don't fall prey to the predators. Workable? If you say so...I personally don't trust eBay. A lot of hassle to go through unnecessarily. Escrow is simple, painless and guaranteed satisfaction from both sides of the transaction if both are on the up-and-up. Does anyone know how much an escrow service charges?
  15. Well since you said it, it looks like a good decision, except the missing beer. Glad you went with clear goggles. Dont know enough about Deepseed. Congrats!
  16. I know you can with a Javelin, but they highly discourage it. Had a request a few years ago. It was a jumper from the old days, used to the rounds and all. Once I asked him if he really wanted a B12 on his chest if he ever face planted it,he decided to save the $75.00 and stick with the standard set up.
  17. Then you might agree that 95% of our mals are body position. Of course with highly loaded canopies that % may be a bit lower. But to actually "pack" a mal is very difficult, especially when dealing with a 7 cell square canopy. On my 40th B day I let a dzo literally wrap my canopy up around his arms, elbows bent at 90, forearms horizontal, canopy between them and he rotated his arms over one another until he had all the canopy in his arms. He stuffed it in the bag and it came out soft, smooth and on heading. We were proving my statement: if the lines, bridal, and slider are correct, it will open. (again a 7 cell square)- You may not like it, but it will open. I have been paying a packer since 1999, never know who is packing and still no mals. It will happen sometime, but most likely it will be my fault. IMO. And of course, do not try this at home
  18. http://www.skydiverolla.com/index-old2.html scroll down It is a shame they have made a statement like that, its the SL and small DZ's that are the heartbeat in skydiving. IMO collectively they produce more "skydivers" every year than several of our major tandem factories. Missouri/Kansas has always battled among themselves, wish they would realize they are only hurting each other and the sport as a whole. Texas used to be like that as well. Shame too, looks like they have a nice facility.
  19. And even then there are still limitations, such as not being able to change the yoke with several manufacturers. Of course they shouldn't be an issue assuming the used rig is somewhat close to fitting. But ya never know, one would be amazed at what I have seen folks purchase.
  20. I think I'll take the next load, or two if yall are back to back of each other. Dont like borrowing things very often, especially from father time. FYI there's more to think about than just the closing pin. Be safe
  21. neither did I my 3 RR I was wondering how Virgins do feel about it. Do they wish to stay so or maybe envy us? I can't remember my opignion at the time. In regards to the virgin mentality of it: yes I went thru all of that. The gear fear, the performance fear, the anxiety of waiting, then come on bring it on attitude! Those are the cycles I went thru. However, I have done 3 intentional chops (one below decision alt, on purpose). Three times I probably should have chopped but rode it out. Hell the last time I grabbed my handles looked down again and started cussing because if I chopped it I knew I would have lost it in the FL swamps. I have jump plenty of vintage gear and my time in the sport I believe has "de virginized" me. Now its like anything else, it is what it is, and I feel I have the confidence, so I really am not worried. Guess time will really tell.
  22. neither, I call it Spectre and I dont pack, never know who is going to either
  23. Ill join in if you will roll n stuff my main again on video, and this time YOU jump it! LOL Not sure if I will be in town then, will let you know, or aybe I will just drive back to TX for it. sending pm
  24. I was on the PMS one Monday morning, can I get one? You have my email already!!
  25. The last one I saw was two years ago at CSS. He went low into cypres territory, his main was open, felt reserve fire, chopped as reserve was getting line stretch. It was a perfect transfer, heads up move. Except of course from being low to begin with it was a quite a site! I believe he made the right decision, besides a horseshoe, two out is my biggest concern, well of course the plane ride. As you know the reserve is more (or almost) horizontal when deploying with a main flying forward, so there is plenty of "room" to get the main cleared. Also I have seen it in CRW situations a few times. Again, I am not saying it is the best answer, but under a grand, there are other options, as you know.
