  1. Was jumping in the Dolemites of southern Austria when the Cessna went real quiet. (There was a fuel vent problem) The pilot starts yelling "AUSFAHRT! in a panicky tone. The door swung open and the mountains were about 300 feet below. I gave him a 90 left and waited a bit to get back over the valley. Listen and look. jon When the pilot starts yelling "AUSFAHRT" you know you are in trouble. I am not sure what it means but it just sounds bad. Onward and Upward!
  2. You landed in that? Must have been before my time, I don't remember hearing about that one. Onward and Upward!
  3. At what point would you interfere with the pilot while he's dealing with an emergency situation, in order to request permission to bail out? I have been in a jump plane when the engine quit 3 times and in my experience the pilot does not remain silent. With no engine it is easy to hear what is going on. At altitude there is no reason to panic and there is plenty of time to make a decision. If we descend a few thousand feet and no instructions are given I think it is entirely appropriate to tap him/her on the shoulder and request instructions. No moving around, no freaking out, just a simple "Hey bud, what do you want us to do?" But again from previous experience the pilot would have already made a decision by then. I remember one load I was on when we had an engine quit at about 8 grand. We were in a 182 with a load of 4 climbing to 10. The pilot (who was not a jumper) immediately opened the door and started screaming "get out, get out!" I was sitting in the door and checked the spot, we were a long way from the DZ so I asked the pilot if we could get a bit closer first. He calmed down, looked out and saw where we were and a said oh yeah sure..... At about 4 grand we all made nice orderly exits and landed at the DZ, the plane dead sticked in without incident. We all did hop and pops and still barely made it back but at the time we jumped there were outs available. If we would have exited at 8 grand when he first said we would have been over the forest with nothing but trees, cliffs, rocks, water, etc. No outs. Pretty rugged terrain in western Oregon. I remember the other jumpers behind me also wanting to exit when the pilot said go but we would have all ended up in the trees. If you are low the decision process needs a bit more haste but at altitude it is time to take a few deep breaths and think about what you are doing. Communicate with the pilot and keep your shit together. Onward and Upward!
  4. So from 9.5 to 3 the pilot just glides along and says nothing? Not likely. Onward and Upward!
  5. Wow, lots of familiar faces in those clips. Back in the 80's I made lots of jumps down at Beagle Sky Ranch and still good friends with Rodney Holberton and know his dad George as well. Haven't been to the LP boogie in years but might have to go this year just to see the movie. Will this be available in DVD? Onward and Upward!
  6. One BH mantle for cameras, one BH gunner for fun jumps. Also about 1000 bucks in head gear. (Not counting the cameras, quick releases, switches, etc.) Onward and Upward!
  7. Maytown is the closest and easiest to get to for you. It is interstate driving most of the way, Traffic is not bad, maybe a bit more than an hour from Joppa. Crosskeys is over two hours and lots of traffic, toll roads, etc. Delmarva is almost 3 hours with bay bridge traffic on weekends. Chambersburg is at least two hours depending on traffic. I lived in MD for 5 years and jumped at all these places, all are good but Maytown is the easiest drive and a very cool small DZ with a wide open landing area. Certainly my favorite. Onward and Upward!
  8. Orange in VA and Chambersburg in PA just off the top of my head. Onward and Upward!
  9. Yes because if he read the complete "fictional story" it would be more clear. Are you this critical of other literary works or just the bible? Do you apply the same standard of textual criticism across the board? Can you honestly say you examine it without bias? What is it about Jesus that invokes such a hostile response in you? I know the answer. I just was wondering what you thought. The bible is an interesting collection of ancient folk tales from the bronze age but not seriously considered to be the word of god. I won't say there is no god because no one really knows. One thing we do know for sure is that god does not write books or talk to people. If the bible is "proof' of god then the Lord of the Rings is proof that Hobbits lived in the shire. Onward and Upward!
  10. How many times (if ever) have you pulled another jumpers reserve handle? I call bullshit. Before you answer I want names, dates and a credible witness. I have only been jumping for 30 years but I remember hearing stories about this kind of thing from the 60's and 70's and as I recall it always ended up in a violent confrontation in the parking lot. Is this really how Y'all still handle things down south? Onward and Upward!
  11. You got the winning ticket John, thanks for the support! Scott Onward and Upward!
  12. We had a great day, 24 loads in the 182 and 6 in the Caravan. I was on every load. The sunset BFR on #30 was sweet! Party and raffle on Saturday. Thanks so much to everyone who stepped up and made this happen, Skydive Ogden, and all of the donors and sponsors. It was a success! Scott Onward and Upward!
  13. I have no intention of responding to it. I just thought it was odd. Onward and Upward!
  14. I received this today, I have no idea who this is or how they got my email address. (It is not the same one I use here) I work at a DZ but have nothing to do with scheduling or manifest. Seems like a scam but I can't figure out what their angle might be? All funds previously donated by DZ.commers have been deposited as a general team donation. http://events.autismspeaks.org/tu/30jumpsinoneday Our 182 should be up and running by the end of next week so the date for the jumps and raffle drawing will be posted soon. I would like to thank all our sponsors, here is the updated list: Performance Designs United Parachute Technologies Mirage Systems ChutingStar ParaGear Velocity Sports Equipment Sunrise (Wings) Western Parachute Sales AeroSports USA (Jerry Baumchen) Ogden Skydiving Center Paraloft (Dave Dewolf) Vasst Sunpath (Javelin) IFly Utah We have had a few setbacks due to weather and mechanics but we are back on track and looking forward to the big day. On the positive side this gave us more time to prepare and raise donations. There is still plenty of time to step up and donate to the cause! Scott Onward and Upward!
  16. Legislators (and their staff) are definitely non-essential. Of course they will exempt themselves from the consequences of their own actions. Exactly! They want to shut down the government? THEY ARE THE GOVERNMENT!!! They should be the first to lose their pay since the can't do their job and produce a budget. Onward and Upward!
  17. He contacted me as well, the offer was to have gear components shipped to me from Florida and I would assemble and pack the reserves and mains, install aad's if needed, and then ship the complete rig to customers here in the US. It made sense to me since he is down under and needed a rigger in the US. At $100 per rig he would also save money because the factory would charge more. I accepted the offer but fortunately for me he never followed through with the deal. Sounds like I dodged a bullet Onward and Upward!
  18. Back in 1995 both my wife and I were federal employees when the government shut down. We were both employed by the US Forest Service in primary fire fighting roles. Since it was December and Fire activity in the Northwest was low we were deemed un-essential and we were furloughed for 26 days. If it would have been the middle of summer we would have stayed on. When it was over they gave us all back pay for the time we were off ( all government employees were paid) so we had a 26 day paid vacation and the whole debacle ended up costing US taxpayers an additional 1.5 billion with no work being done during this time. The same thing will happen again if they shut down the government, it won't save any money and will actually cost us more and increase the debt. These freshman tea baggers don't seem to understand that. If they are stupid enough to force a shutdown then they should all stop getting paid as well. If they want to put a couple million Americans out of work then they should join them in the unemployment lines. Onward and Upward!
  19. Reserves are not z-p fabric. It is folly to think you can load them like a z-p main and get the same results. I have a smart 135, Icarus 138, and PD 143. My mains are all 135's Onward and Upward!
  20. Got it John, your tickets are in the box. Thanks and good luck! Scott Onward and Upward!
  21. Awesome, does Asian Jesus have a beard? Onward and Upward!
  22. Really? I attended an AFFI certification course less than two years ago and the entire course was devoted to exits, catching a student on their back and flipping them over, stopping a spin and doing the "8 second dance" If you could do that 3 out of 4 times you passed. We spent about 20 minutes talking about canopy control. I have been a static line instructor for over 20 years and IAD for about 5 years so I spend most of the class on canopy control and emergency procedures, the free fall skills come later and are of less importance to me. The whole system is ass backwards. Onward and Upward!
  23. I was hoping to make the 30 jumps today but unfortunately our 182 is down for maintenance. It is just not cost effective to make 30 hop and pops with the Caravan so we are going to reschedule. Just a minor set back, and safety comes first. On a positive note this gives us more time for fundraising for the cause and that is really what this is all about. The new tentative date is April 16th, Mechanics and weather permitting. I would also like to thank Sunpath for joining our list of sponsors with a certificate for 35% off a new Javelin. Onward and Upward!
  24. It never says he was a handsome white guy with a tan either. But the painting on my grandmas wall clearly shows otherwise. Onward and Upward!
  25. Mine was a night four stack, CRW at night is quite the experience. Onward and Upward!
