  2. My interest in this matter has everything to do with friends in trouble and nothing to do with politics and the law. If you want to argue either subject--albeit, not with me--the discussion properly belongs in Speaker's Corner. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 3. The news report said these guys had three quarters of a million dollars in cash. Do they really need our financial help? The news report said the money has been confiscated, so it's of no use to them at the present time. Given the way these kinds of cases go, I would expect the money is gone for good. I do not know what other resources are available to them. I do know that Avery has spent his time on this earth paying it forward, and that's more than enough incentive for me. What others do is up to them. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  4. Seriously?! You(or whose ever idea this is) are expecting people to pay for his mistakes?! There is no way you can make me believe that 60 pounds of pot, $800,000 and over 400 plants were all for medicinal uses. I don't think anyone is that gulliable. If on the very off chance they are really legal distributors, where can I get in on the business, sounds like the dough is rolling in Actually, I wasn't trying to convince anyone of anything. The people who know Avery and Jerri and Harry (and possibly the others, although I can't speak to that because I don't know them myself) will have no trouble understanding why there are some of us who want very much to help in any way we can. I did not share the information from basejumper.com for the purpose of debate about the subject matter (i.e., the reason for the arrest), but only so that those who would like to be helpful to some people who have always gone out of their way to be helpful to others can do so. 5. You should feel free to express your disdain to the person(s) who made the request. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  6. Not Avery. You'd hear about the devil buying snowblowers in Sears before that would ever happen. The subsequent article (which was not posted until after you posted) makes the sequence pretty obvious--the other arrests resulted from material the police found in his home. There's a thread on basejumper.com asking that the situation not be discussed publicly. Also, there's information for anyone who wants to make a donation to help these folks out during this difficult time. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 7. Doesn't work for me. My pet and my child? No question that I'd save my child. The problem arises when it's down to the pet I love and a stranger. I know that the right action--the action I hope I would choose--is to save the stranger. I'm pretty sure that at the instinctive level, I would be compelled to save a strange child. I'm not so confident about what I would do in the real world if the choice were between my beloved pet and a strange adult. What's odd is that I can think of a few adults I would not choose to save if the choice were the life of my pet. A stranger might fare better with me than some of my casual acquaintances and my first husband. "Don't let them give you to the women." 8. http://www.answers.com/instinctual But... Neither WordNet (Princeton University) nor Chambers recognized instinctual as a word. Then again, instictive didn't cut it either. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  9. In theory? I would save the life of the stranger. Human life, sacred, all that. As a practical matter? I don't know. I've tried a couple of fantasy scenarios, and I can't get my mind around letting the kitty die. I would hope that if push came to shove, I would save a person, but I'm just not so sure what would happen if I were faced with the choice. 10. I found this on another message board: Rita, who went by the name Kryos, passed away last night. Nobody knows exactly what happened. She wrote to me last night and said she had stayed home from work due to a migraine. They found she had passed out in the bathroom, hit her head pretty hard, and did not wake up. http://www.cruisemates.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3793146 If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 11. She started jumping at Cross Keys. She did some jumping in Florida, including Sebastian, Zephyrhills and DeLand (where she broke both femurs). I don't remember if there were other dropzones--she didn't have a lot of jumps by the time she broke her legs. On another note--I stand by everything I wrote about her in those two threads linked up above. I am stunned by her death, although I suppose I should've expected it, because her health was never that great. She had a lot of physical limitations over which she didn't have a lot of control, but she pushed beyond them relentlessly. And yeah, she was a joker. Her sense of humor was her prime defense against rejection and failure. I am sorry that she didn't conquer skydiving, but she made the best of it, just as she made the best of every other obstacle in her way. Godspeed, Rita. rl P.S. to Bozo and Jack--Has anyone told Patti? If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  12. That's a whole nother problem, and one more very good reason to keep cats inside. You don't want them eating birds. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  13. You really don't want the cats eating the mice. Better to keep them well fed, and dispose of the mouse bodies yourself than rely on the cats to eat them. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  14. In 1991, I gave my daughter a two-month old black kitten that I was subsequently forced (after frequent marital arguments about the furniture) to have declawed. The cat lived inside four mouse-free walls until 2001, when she went to live at my grandmother's house, which was mouse-infested. I'm not sure exactly how many mice she caught and killed--probably a hundred or more--but the house was completely mouse-free by the time my grandmother died and the house was sold. Remember, she had no front claws and she was 10 years old. It's just what cats do. (Strangely enough, she never bothered the pet rats or the parrot or any of the birds I rehabbed, even though she had plenty of opportunities to nail them all.) With that said, mice carry parasites that you do not want your kittens to catch, so make sure they have all their shots and top-of-the-line flea prevention. IMO, cats belong indoors, and if you keep them in, they will certainly prevent the mice from invading your house. OTOH, if you do decide to keep them outside, train them early to avoid raccoons and possums and, most especially, the road. There's really nothing worse than waking up one morning and finding your kitty squished on the centerline, except, perhaps, watching it happen right before your eyes. 16. The correct response is "What a beautiful baby." You're hopeless, honey. I hope you're well.
  17. Thank y'all. Here are the rest of the pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/rhondalea/ARG?authkey=Gv1sRgCMCkroTHrNeunQE&feat=directlink I apologize for not replying sooner, but life has been a bit hectic. I'm headed back home in the next couple of days, and as much as I miss husband and cats, I'm sure going to miss this baby. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 18. Last night at 10:39 EDT, Beck gave birth to a 9 pound, 10 ounce baby boy (making me a grandmother soon enough for me to enjoy it). I wanted to let those who knew her back then in on the happiness. A picture of little Anthony (named for his dad) is attached. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  19. You can go to http://www.spamcop.net/anonsignup.shtml and paste in the email (text and headers) to find exactly where it comes from (just don't send the reports). Unfortunately, it is possible that your stalker is using a proxy or a remailer. If so, obtaining an IP address is useless, but remailers will block your address from their servers if you ask. The address to contact the remailer will be in the email headers. As others have said, you should go to the police. Unless a stalker is totally ham-handed, s/he will be very hard for you to identify on your own. Here's some helpful information from the US Department of Justice, including a list of online resources (at the end of the page): http://www.usdoj.gov/criminal/cybercrime/cyberstalking.htm Also, if you speak the language (I don't), you can google "cyberstalking" here: http://www.google.nl/ Hang in there. 20. The guy I knew was a real decent guy too. Great instructor, rigger and human being. IIRC, he was close to my age, which would make him somewhere in his late 40s or early 50s now. The last time I saw him was at Cross Keys. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  21. Call Dave DeWolf and ask him. After that, you should have no worries. Dan has been around for years. He was one of my instructors at the Herd and at Skydive East in 1995. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  22. Brown recluse spiders have six eyes, grouped in pairs. Most others, like this little guy, have eight eyes. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  23. I generally prefer it, too; but interestingly enough, I find it glitchy (on any computer) in the posting function in DZ.com. Go figure. Not to mention that Firefox ain't all it's cracked up to be. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  24. He admitted it to his ex wife and attorney, then fled the country a few days before they issued the arrest warrant. I am all for a fair trial, but he ADMITTED IT. He should burn. IF anyone in Deland helped him flee then they should be charged with crimes as well. Friends is one thing, but helping a guy run away from this is AWFUL. I shudder to think that people helped him. Especially since I have a feeling that those children are probably skydivers kids and the people that MAY have helped him are probably jumpers as well. I've been wondering if anyone had noticed the line from the earlier article: The Witness learnt that Harding molested the children, who are sisters, when they were younger than 11 in Florida and Arizona [emphasis supplied] from 2003 until he fled the country. If the above is accurate, then the likelihood that they're not the children of a skydiving family is pretty close to nil. I've been wracking my brain in an effort to imagine who in DeLand would've helped him, but under the circumstances, I just can't fathom it. On the other hand, Mikey Darden is a forthright, honest and trustworthy guy, and if he says someone did, then I guess I have to believe it even if it hurts my heart to do so. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from.
