  1. Yes, his tone could be abrasive at times--I still have a scar or two--but underneath that, he was sweetheart. I saw the post in Incidents yesterday, but the linked newspaper article said his injuries were not life-threatening. Then I logged on this morning and saw your post here. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  2. He's immortalized here, kinda. http://books.google.com/books?id=Q-0Nz181RLkC&pg=PA26&lpg=PA26&dq=Carl+Rupert+parachute&source=bl&ots=96cFNYzr6W&sig=xeIaLz75xIzQhNz84DeiITwcWD0&hl=en&ei=nIykSqnKONSMtgfZ_MSbBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1#v=onepage&q=Carl%20Rupert%20parachute&f=false See the second item in the right-most column, under "Tester Claims Record: He Jumps 38 Times in 'Chute Marathon.'" Carl was the packer, not the jumper. http://www.jjonz.us/RadioLogs/pagesnfiles/logs_files_RH/1940s_RH/40-44/1940/40rh_08Aug/40-08-05-(Mon)_%5BWSJ%5D.pdf If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 3. I was speaking of governments and those who blindly follow. Your statement was not correct by any means and therefore it was pointless. I think Bill is pointing out the irony of your protesting the hyperbolic characterization of Dr. Bordson with a hyperbolic characterization of your own. Really, it's not okay, no matter who does it. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  4. Then when is it ok to kill someone? http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/04/florida.murder.kidnap.penalty/index.html?eref=igoogle_cnn Let it be said that I don't think much of the death penalty. There are all too many innocent people who die as the result of a flawed legal system. OTOH, if you have someone dead to rights, perhaps it's not so bad. And no, I don't care that he has a brain injury or a low IQ. My only regret is that he won't die a slow, painful death. Emotion-driven? You betcha. But then again, that's what the death penalty is all about. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  5. I guess the speed with which you process explains why we are also so much better at spelling than you are. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  6. Pop-sci, but very funny: http://books.google.com/books?id=ht0WZbw0B0gC&dq=Why+Men+Don't+Listen+%26+Women+Can't+Read+Maps&source=gbs_navlinks_s also this one, same authors: http://books.google.com/books?id=I3Kt-uAasZoC&dq=inauthor:%22Allan+Pease%22 If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 7. That looks NSFW to me. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  8. Are you demanding equality in matters of biology? There are lots of studies out there about the differences between men and women. Reams of scholarly articles, as well as dozens of pop-sci books to choose from. Have at it. Please feel free to report back with your results. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  9. No. It's biology. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  10. So I take it you're bucking for your shot at immorality with "Quade's Law"? No. I wouldn't call it a "law"; addendum perhaps. If you decide to stick around this cesspool of enlightenment, I'm sure you'll see the trend. In theory, I should avoid posting to usenet until I get out from under the lawsuit in which I'm currently a defendant. Someone infinitely wiser than me suggested I head on over to the DailyKos for my fix of controversy, but I truly don't enjoy what passes for political discussion these days. Here, at least, I don't have to think very hard when I construct a post--and if that's not a damning indictment of Speaker's Corner, I don't know what is. But "Quade's Addendum" doesn't have quite the ring of "Quade's Law" so I think you should shoot higher. OTOH, you could always buck for "Quade's Immortal Addendum to Godwin's Law." Yeah. I like that. It has a nice ring to it. Edited to add: No. Make it: "Quade's Immortal Corollary to Godwin's Law." rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  12. So I take it you're bucking for your shot at immorality* with "Quade's Law"? *A momentary lapse into low humor. Worse yet, it'll probably happen again. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  13. Godwin! Everyone here is doing what you're describing, btw, so every one of you (i.e., us) is a damned paranoid Nazi. How's that for political hysteria? If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  14. I should have given you this link: http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware/ The party line is to download from the author's website, but FileHippo is reliable, and it has most of the better free tools. I had several replies, but nothing yet from the MBAM analyst. In the meantime, someone smarter than me pointed out that since it's adware, AdAware might pick it up where the others do not. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 15. You mean like in the last sentence above where you used a "thinly-veiled personal attack" to call me a "weasel"? Now, I'm nearly certain you didn't mean to do that, so I'm not actually calling you hypocritical for doing it, but using that as a perfect example of how some folks get their panties in a bunch by identifying with the collective. To paraphrase Carly Simon, "you probably think this post is about you." Well, it's not. (Most of the time anyway.) Well done. You're right. I wasn't calling you a weasel, and when I read the very first line of your response (without finishing your post--another object lesson; thank you very much), I was immediately off and running with the explanation that "blah, blah, blah, didn't think it, wouldn't say it, wouldn't even imply it, because it isn't true, blah, blah, blah." Of course, then I finished reading, and I had to delete three paragraphs, but hey, the time wasted is my own damn fault. Still, it would be nice if you (collectively) would give a little more consideration when composing to the possible misinterpretation of your words. My "weasel" remark is a perfect example, given that it never occurred to me that it could be taken the way you didn't take it. Unfortunately, even if I take you at your word that you were not calling Dr. Bordson a paranoid, I can't retract what I wrote earlier, because I see a lot of it in here. Repeatedly. rl Bonus link: http://www.vandruff.com/art_converse.html If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  16. It's a surreal experience, I must say. I remember when Michael Dudek and I were fighting like badly-behaved housepets in windcatcher's Christian thread...it seemed so important, so critical, to win. ("Win what?" you might well ask. I still don't know the answer to that question.) Ye gods. This forum never rests, and so very little gets written that has a basis in any kind of logical argument. It's almost always about justifying ones gut feeling with some kind of pseudo-logic. Interesting to watch now and again, but daily? My head just exploded. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  17. And if you can quote where I've specifically called anyone on this forum paranoid, I invite you to do so. I'll admit that I can occasionally have lapse in judgement and I'm more than willing to apologize for any specific statement made in that form. It should be obvious to any reasonable person I was not talking specifically at all, but rather addressing the unfounded fears (paranoia) of the people that have been duped by the right wing trolling talking heads. I'm thinking of a phrase...one of bill's oft-used phrases, as a matter of fact... "thinly-veiled personal attack" The English language is one of the most flexible of languages, and it will allow you to do all manner of ad hom without ever looking someone in the eye and calling him a weasel. I have to admit that a lot of the conversational terrorism I find in this forum is elegantly done; unfortunately, no matter how thoroughly you perfume a goat, it's still a goat. To be straighforward, yer still doin' it. That's not to say everyone else isn't doing it too--most of them are--but you happen to be the person who responded to my post responding to your post, so the spotlight is yours. Nice to see you, btw. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  18. Yep. We're also going to have real problems in the landing area, because all the ultra-conservatives will refuse to turn to the left. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  19. Dr. Bordson is not paranoid, and it would be more productive to analyze her arguments and debate her civilly than resort to sarcasm, ad hom and other fallacies. I don't agree with her, generally, but that's not to say she hasn't made some legitimate points. Skydiving is doomed. Soon enough you'll all be so polarized that you won't even be able to get a two-way together. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  20. No one needs to send him money. Some of us want to, though. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  21. I found this: http://www.windowskb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/windowsxp/266392/Pop-Ups and this http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t214830.html SuperAntiSpyware http://superantispyware.com/ is also free, and along with MBAM, is considered one of the top removers. (Spybot and AdAware are pretty much a waste of time, but having now written that, one of them will probably be the only program that finds it.) You can always try running a HiJackThis scan (http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/), and you can check it here: http://hijackthis.de/ but even if it gives you a big red "x" in spots, you shouldn't kill anything. Just use it as a tool for figuring out what you have. In the meantime, I'll ask one of the guys at MBAM why their program didn't pick it up and what to do about it. 22. Funny. That's how I felt about Bush, the younger*--vehemently, I might add--but had my daughter been given the opportunity to hear a sitting president speak, I would have done everything I could to be sure she did not miss out. That's not to say that I wouldn't have used it as a springboard for discussion, but then again, I'm more inclined to have a child of mine make her own choices, rather than adopt mine without any critical thought. (*I voted for his dad--actually, I took my daughter with me and let her push the levers. She was quite young, but even then, we discussed the reasons why I chose him over the other candidates.) 23. Ratings. Sensationalism attracts viewers, so that's where the money goes. It's all about advertising. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  25. FYI, the site doesn't exist. "No whois server known for the given domain" You might want to try scanning with Malwarebytes, which is, overall, the most reliable scanner available for this sort of thing. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
