I do recall from my business and psych studies at the University of Manitoba (different U of M) that one thing that has NEVER been eliminated - and is indeed hard to objectively measure - is cultural bias on any type of test. I don't know a lot, if anything, about your particular admission tests but it sounds as if they have "Attempted" to eliminate this factor with a blanket curve. I would disagree with your use of the term "handicap" with respect to intelligence and substitute the term "aptitude" - isn't that what our previous generations used to call them? Aptitude tests? If you want into law school, for example, you need to prove you have an above average aptitude for THINKING like a lawyer. ditto for Management, Medicine, etc. Yes, this is selection bias. I'm sure in the long run this system has "produced the desired product" in those areas (for better or worse) as "the administration" scores themselves on how well their grads do in the real world after the fact. Should this aptitude testing apply to general arts education? I think it does and they call it "high school" and those who can deal well with that pressure cooker while growing up are likely to succeed at university if they care to do so. Does reverse discrimination improve or exasorbate the problem? I guess it depends on your position within the "system". No matter what, it certainly is a Policy tool that is influenced by those who fund the educational system. Now we'd need to address the political system and party policies as well.   3. Get the Book "Clone Brews" - either the North American or International version and have at 'er! I've got a fiver of Pilsner Urquel on the go, partial mash with a 1 hour boil and Wyeast European Lager II. Once Upon a Time I made beer like most do - from a tin and with dextrose. Tired of the cidery, um, flavour, I got into the more advanced stuff. (Best spanish inquisition voice... ) among our chief weaponry are: - the spare stove downstairs so I can worry less about the mess - the spare fridge. Most will run to nearly 50f when set in the 'just off off' position. Perfect and necessary for true lager fermentation. Make a stronger shelf with 3/4" plywood supported by angle iron CAREFULLY screwed to the fridge walls to avoid puncturing the cooling coils (I made mine out of 1/2" square stock held on each side with 3 - #8 screws. A standard apartment size fridge will JUST hold 2 carboys) - a cooling coil. Papasian's "New Brewers Handbook" describes the tool - basicly a 20' coil of copper tubing wound so it will fit in your boil kettle. Splice on a washing machine hose at either end and attach to your faucet. Cools the Wort down to 75f in about 20 minutes - v. cool and no worry about smashing a carboy from heat shock or bacterial contamination from time delays. -Grolsch porcelain flip top bottles. Not only are they 16 oz bottles, there's no more need for a bottle capper. I plan to stock up for the summer DZ season. buying commercial brew at $10/6 ate a lot of jump tix. Quiteagree that the normal "FDA approval process" is NOT followed when the military is concerned (my sis works in Regulatory affairs for a drug company in the bay area so I know a bit about what they'd need to do to get , um..., "treatments" approved). How bout LSD?!?!? THAT was tested real well... then "they" lost control. Guess we learn well from our past mistakes. *** I wonder if the "intelligence" would have gotten through if it was an American exercise taking place? I bet not (or not in time anyway) and I bet we'd not have heard about it at all. However, as it involved foreigners, it also involved foreign policy ... something in which the Bush administration appears to be a bit weak. (IMHO). I bet there's more than 2 pilots that feel bad about the system's failure... but a whole lot more who simply think "it's just part of the game".   6. Jet A. Why, you say? Geez... allow me to demonstrate my chemical ignorance... Jet A is basically Kerosene, right? Kerosene (an "oil") burns slow and the volatile compounds do not evaporate in a flash (pun intended). 100LL is highly volatile and all the 'good stuff' boils off in ambient temperateure. Soak the wood and 100 LL will not KA-BOOM just minutes later. Most ofthe explosive power has already evaporated. Jet A will burn 'forever' by contrast and fuel the fire into a raging frenzy. Worse yet is C-12 Racing Fuel designed for 12:1 compression racing engines. We built a bonfire of dead picnic tables one Canada day at the track and blew nearly 5 gallons of the stuff. ...wouldn;t even keep the tables alight. Another 2 gallons of pump fuel, however, made quite a nice kaboom. Now, take some diesel fuel (crude Jet A) and some nitrogen fertilizer ... and soon you have Oklahoma but I'm sure we don't want to go there. Bastards! Oh does that description evoke memories of Gimli in mid-summer ... ...indeed we had a charter member of the Winnipeg Sports Car Club have his ashes spread around turn 3 (just a long spot West of the peas) last year. Should I decide on an ash dive I'l get to cover BOTH sports in one pass ... and may even have the estate cover a BIG plane... although an "accuracy urn dive" into the yard of the cottage would also be cool - since I started skydiving I've always wondered if (or when) I could sink a landing into our cul-de-sac. I have a LOVELY collection of "Valve wireless sets" and there's something to be said about listening to WWII era Big Band or Voice of America while basking in the crackle and glow of the Old Tech (same goes for listening to a baseball game). Too, there is awful "post-Beatles" music ... but in fairness it'd be awfully hard to choreograph freefly to "Love me do". ..I AM working on a Dave Brubeck piece, tho.   11. Eee-yuppp! I remember when "Superchannel" was first broadcast and the bootleg descrambler was a 2" x 2" circuit board with about 3 electronic pieces on it. They had this new show called "MTV" or something that was cool (anyone remember the first video they played?) Our first VCR (about a grand) had a remote with a 12 foot cord and tapes were about 10 bucks a piece. I still own the very first sony Walkman with - wait for it - an FM tuner option! 4 AA batteries played about 3 casettes. Remember casettes?     Beer for Quade. Having looked at both I THINK it was the C-17. I honestly didn;t pay attention to winglets or no winglets but the nose profile of the C-17 is closer than the C-5 and the markings were almost identical. Whatthehell do you guys PUT in those things?!?!? A 300 way in 1 pass? The Big Antonov was here a few years ago at an air show (and then picked up 10 combine harvesters if I recall). Loudiamond, I see C-130's on flyby every day and no, they don't seem so big. ...until they drop in on Gimli (YGM) while we're jumping. We have one of 3 SARex training targets in Canada (wha a lovely bowl of peas in which to land) and see them taxi by but a hundred feet or so away. Cooler still (but annoying because they don't seem to care about our "space" ) are the Canadair CL-215 water bombers http://www.airliners.net/open.file/307493/L/ Big smoky radials make such a wonderful sound...     while we're on Army planes, can anyone tell me what the BIGGEST 4 engine jet youze guys fly? Just saw one up close and personal My home is unde the main flight path and most traffic flies overhead at about 6-800 ft AGL (man do Cessna look tiny and slow!!) Anyway, this horkin' huge 4 engine thingy with "US Air Force" written behind the cockpit and ahead of the front door flew in an hour or so ago. It would DWARF a 747 and the Hercs that fly by every day (man do I LOVE the sound of a well trimmed 4 engine prop plane). I thought it might be an Antonov but then I thought better of that (you wouldn't DARE buy russian ... would you?). Any ideas?   17. John, Fair enough comment but I DID read Bill's post ... perhaps too carefully. Not to nit pick (damn I can be analytical sometimes) but I DID crack my college texts and do some research because I personally thought that what Bill wrote might lead some people to form invalid conclusions. Since this is the Safety and Training Forum I thought my clarification might be relevant to the thread. We certainly don't need pepole thinking their chances of a double mal actually INCREASE with jump numbers. Conversely, we don't need people thinking it can't happen to them because they only have 50 jumps and "a main mal comes along only every 500 so a double mal will never happen to me". My initial point, perhaps equally unclear in the interest of brevity, was that the probability of a double mal on jump #121 is (and should be) completely and exactly the same as on jump #122 or on jump # 1,022 provided no user-controllable variables change. (The fact, however, is that they do) The scenario Bill presented ... ***you'd need to make something like 120,000 jumps to have a 50/50 chance of having a reserve mal.*** would have been accurately written as " by the time you and a friend have each done 120,000 jumps, one of you has a 100% chance of having experienced a double mal. That double mal has an equal chance of having been on jump #1 as on jump # 120,000. I think the whole issue could and should be looked at from another angle: We have some control over our primary equipment's functionality in packing AND on deployment. Anything we do to make them more reliable reduces the odds of needing to go to backup equipment - equipment over which we have little or no control. [is my reserve more or less likely to open if I've had a main mal? Answer: there should be no change unless you've not left your reserve enough time to open.] Pull. Pull Stable.   18. gocha beat fudd... I measured my lineset! (and daaamn did I find out shit). Then I cooked up a batch of 'cloned' Pilsener Urquel to improve my mood. We WERE supposed to winter skydive but the mercury froze . Imagine that, Winter in Manitoba...cold? Well it had been +6 celcius (low 40's F) and now with the windchill it IS 40 F... minus that is.   19. Hi again RiggerRob! Took the PA specs and did some measurin'. First off, I now understand why 'simple' rigging services cost $'s because I easily blew an evening measuring and then calculating (and that was with my computer's help with the math!!). I bet a 'professional rigger' would have stopped at about line 3 because the results wee not great. The whole A set hsad shrunk 8 cm +/- except the one line that had been replaced which was only 2 cm short! the R4 A line was 12 cm short !! The R2C and R2D were also noticibly shorter than the surrounding lines. The D lines were all over the place (-2 to -8). The tail with brakes set was HIGH on he LHS (+3) and LOW on the RHS (-6). There was a 5 cm difference (-12 and -7) in the toggle settings. Worse yet it appears that the LS was the one that was shortened and that's the high side of the canopy already. Can you say "warped" ?!?. 'splains a few things about its ground-hungriness (trim change), sluggish performance (warped) and difficult to impossible flare (well, it IS old... but apparently there's more). Seems that a day in my basement has been time well spent. Now I KNOW I need a new canopy - I just can't see changing 5-8 lines so they are "equally" worn out and a new lineset on old F-111 just doesn't seem like money well spent.   21. Bill speaks the truth on this one (as always). I fly a "ragged out" Raven II at close to 1:1 and it opens um, briskly even on a nice deployment. I had one terminal round ride under a LoPo 24 while on progression. NEVER have I been slammed so hard! NEVER have I been so glad to see something overhead. The landing was not much harder than what I get under said Raven if I mis-time the flare. Still, with no steering to speak of, my decision on what reserve style would be in my Beer rig was made that instant. *** So long as we respect the weaskest part of our system (jumper + gear + environment) little surperises will seldon grow into big problems.
