  1. Interesting, Mr. Quade... I spent last weekend at a Judges course (1st of 2 weekends) and we spent a bunch of time discussing the role of the videographer. Now, I understand, they are awarded medals and are considered "part of the team". Incongruent with gender mixing? Maybe not. The "NJ" rule seems to sugest that the camfly is 'not' a part of the "4 way performance" and therefore the gener of the camfly is irrelevant. Clear as mud? Maybe you have sone ideas? Should they be called 5 way and 9 way events and be completely gender specific with no NJ rule? Enquiring minds want to know... there must be SOME political indicators floating around to suggest why the rules are as they are. 2. Geez, we share the same bigway videographer!! Mine looks similar unless the TV monitor (Original Radeon All in wonder - still kicks ass) is running. Then whatever is being broadcst is watermarked over the bigway. THAT gets messy. Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  3. Smile, Karen! Haven't heard of the "new" charges here in MB - are they replaing the DUI's or are they in addition? What is the general feeling out on the left coast? Here, Premier Doer made a media stand and said "he himself has a 0 tolerance rule" (but then again he gets chauffeured most everywhere ) Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  4. Dare I point out the irony...? ...or perhaps was the Canadian not an existentialist? (sorry, "that" would be "Be", not be) Dave from Manitoba, a place not much different from North Dakota PS: The correct spelling is c-EH-n-EH-d-i-EH-n Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  5. Oooooh, Karen, I bet you're gonna get a physics lesson from someone smarter than me on that one... (I just don't know who)... but I'll try to make an arguement against in DZ english... Do the bubbles now try to float "down" and thus stay in the drink? I think the problem surrounding big bottles is the VOLUME of air that can be compressed. ISTR that a liquid will abosorb Co2 to a certain extent based on temperature and pressure. Given that a full bottle contains almost no air and super-saturated drink there is nowhere for the Co2 to go. When you recap the bottle the C02 leaks out of the drink and into the new airspace and it re-pressurizes the bottle - but by then it's also gone out of the drink. Much the same is a 'sloppy pour' where all the fizz gets shaken out and the remaining drink is left flatter than it would be if poured gently. The other solutions: - waste the last 1/2 - 2l is almost as cheap as 600 ml -lower your standards and kwitcherbichun -switch to beer (so much for the leftovers problem) Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  6. I'll be in the Bay area (visiting from Canada) and am thinking about it. The pfd's on the subject on their website are down... what is on the sched? How much are jump tix? Will attending the lectures make me "USPA current" (our C 182 freezes solid at Hallow'een). Should I bring my gear or are rentals reasonable? Anybody? 7. quite agree! Kneejerk reactions never work and often hurt. Why are airlines going bankrupt? Why does GM need to give you your new car "free" for a year? Enron et al made many people think of accountants and businessmen as crooks. The shuttle tragedy shook our faith in the engineers and the NASA program - one of the great things the USA does. So who do you trust anymore but your fellow skydiver? ...and with all this going on, why am I still coming to visit my sister in SanFran at the end of the month? Well, I hope it involves skydiving at some point... Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  8. James, I refute your arguement. Bill suggested it would cost money to "turn in" a bottle. Who would do that? Here, it costs "nothing" - or appears to - because we have ALREADY paid the "turn in fee". The economics of Public goods is quite interesting to me as it was among my studies at university. The end result of the 2 systems is similar - if ten percent of bottles are turned in but every purchase is charged $0.02, the net Revenue per bottle returned is $0.20 but the additional "product" is 9 bottles in the landfill. With a $0.25 fee, there would be 10 bottles in the landfill but also enough fewer jobs to equal the lost revenue of "the system". Methinks the situation Bill is getting into is a view of the classical Capitalistic model where the User pays for the first line use of the product and damn the secondary effects. That is, should Bill want to drink a drink, he pays for the drink anbd nothing more. If he ALSO wants to be environmentally conscious and chooses to recycle said drink bottle, he then pays separately for THAT service. The Socialistic model assigns a value to the public "Good" - such as the recycling program - and implements a 'consumption tax' to pay for that Good. Because such Goods (like a library or a park) are not universally used, the direct cost to each user would be too high to support the Good its self and the Good would cease to exist. Other examples where either Chartered Monopolies or taxes have been used to 'create' products include the telephone system (now deregulated), the electric system (deregulation in California caused many of their current problems) and the highway system (income tax and fuel taxes - still NOT deregulated except for "toll roads" ) Bill's power company wants to use its power over a smaller producer (Bill) to artificially restrict supply and maintain their price and profit. If the state were to pass a law REQUIRING his power company to buy his product at the same rate he pays them for theirs, more people would likely produce their own power. Then however, the Capitalist power company would buy up the generator companies and raise the price of the equipment to the point where their loss of revenue on the sale of electricity was eqlled by their gains on the sale of generating equipment. This is also known as a "Zero sum Game" and is a common tool of Public Policy. ...of course, what's NOT been said in any of this is WHO controls the jobs that are CREATED when a new Public good is Created... "They" of course are the "Friends" of the politicians in power at the time. See, it really IS a system. Dave PS: Good for You Bill! Now that you're legal, do like Keanu did in The Matrix. Take the red pill and 'disconnect from the system' Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  9. Well, Bill, maybe not $0.25, but here in Canada we pay an "environmental levy fee" of $0.02 on EVERY plastic bottle we buy and $0.10 on every litre of motor oil. There's more I know but won't burden you with ... Can you just completely disconnect and run self-sufficiently? Here, our utilities have a "fee fee", that is, even if you use $0/month, just to stay connected costs about $15. Go figure. 10. I was considering a NEW PISA canopy direct from SA on the basis of affordability. Sad to say but the US/C$ relationship makes most US canopies $3k landed and taxed at my door. That's just dumb and not terribly affordable. I suspect I'll wind up buying used from within Canada if this "international collusion" pulls away one of the few loopholes left to us Northerners. Oh well... I bet our thoughts weren't even on the radar screen when this was all considered. It's also the same realon I'll likely buy a new Sidewinder (Cdn mfg) and not a Voodoo/Javelin/Etc... Can a "Made in USA" tag really be worth a 60 percent cost premium? Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  11. Kamloops Boogie is the Canadian Victoria Day Long weekend. This year, that is May 17/18 weekend and the stat holiday is Monday the 19th. I'm guessing that means 17/18/19. Dave T (Winnipeg) Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  12. hey mon can you play fluegelhorn? ive had a piece i wrote in college that needed one for a loooong time, and it one of my all time favorite sounds..(well right behind the big bass saxophone.. *** Oh maann, I'm gonna have haunting dreams of Chuck Mangione' Feels So Good all night. time to haul out my copy of Ken Burns' Jazz doccu. Zenn, do you REALLY mean the BASS saxophone and not the Baritone? I've only ever had the chance to play a BBflat bass sax ONCE - they're really rare and are played standing up with the horn on the ground "on a little standy-thingie". The case won't fit sideways in most cars! The E flat Bari though, is the horn I excelled on despite most of my time behind a tenor. Geri Mulligan is my fave for this - he does a version of Brubeck's Take 5 where he's screaming in altissimo and his sound has the righ ringing sound only a big horn can produce - much like the flugelorn does to a trumpet (MP3 to you?) Y'know, one of these days we should "arrange" a Musician's Boogie - jump by day and jam by night. Dave Ornete Coleman Free Jazz (concept). Miles Davis Bitches' Brew (awesome Bass Clarinette), Canonball Adderley Spontaneous Combustion (Parker meets Coltrane), Brubeck Time Out/Further Out (can you REALLY keep time?), Coltrane A Love Supreme (Modal/conceptual) Davis Birth of the Cool (Early cool w/Mulligan), Billy Cobham Spectrum (Tommy Bolin's guitar and all those drums) ... more...? Can't forget playing Weather Report's Birdalnd and Hancock's Watermelon Man (like we all did) or 12 bar based stuf like Kansas City, Night Train... damn I gotta stop thinking and start playing ... 13. October 14. Ugh. Not for lack of trying... I even had my reserve repacked EXPECTING it to happen. But for Nov 11 - a jump day I couldn't make - we've been weathered out either to extreme cold or clouds. I have a trip to California going on at the end of the month but I'm only bringing my logbook since doubtlessly either I won't have time or I'll get a hassle from the STA. Oh well, it'll be spring soon. Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  14. Wow, an eliptical drogue I wonder when or if we'll get numbers as to flight and vertical descent speed. Faster than a tandem but slower than a wingsuit? Any way to make it collapse when you deploy a "real" parachute? Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

  18. I think the new term for us is type "T", T standing for Thrill. Were Dope(amine) addicts plain and simple. Of course, Acura would call us type "R" personalities ... if we'd stay on the planet long enough and save enough money to buy a $40,000 toy that doesn't fly Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  19. Instructor Assisted Deployment ... modern version of S/L. Wanted to be "in control". Standard FJC offered and publicized here. Didn't know what AFF was. why Zeemax?

...not lazy, just ignorant to how important a cool handle would be in the 'hood when I first signed up. Maybe I'll let my alter-ego join in someday soon (being the good Gemini I am...) Actually, I'm the ONLY Dave on our DZ. SkyDave to my sportscar racing buddies but that wouldn't fly here either. Dave PS: have a whuffo buddy with a Zeemax Mini too! 24. Arrrghhhhhh! I've been fighting 'the cold from Hell' since Monday (exploding head syndrome + suckerpunch in the throat feeling) and on top of that TRYING to sort out a 3 year old RRSP (401k) contribution problem that occured at the hand of my former (now defunct) investment house... finally getting somewhere but the stress-ometer is through the roof! Blowing things up is a welcome relief but I feel the tug of addiction ... It's winter, the jump plane is in pieces, I'm still sick .. no jumps for me - this is a good plan B. Thanks Kev
  25. By the Deathclock, I'll die on the Ides of March 2042 (how warped is that?) at 74. By 'the fool' s link (Hi James!) I get almost another whole year! woohoo. Either Cancer (25%) or a horrible accident(19%). Hmmm, about a 1 in 2 chance I'll die because I've had fun in my life? Perhaps a Septegenerain swoop meet under a Nexxus 32 gone bad? Another racecar wreck? Something else? Either way, it's gonna be a long while, so get used to me Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
