  1. I have Nero, within that, there is the option of burning a DVD as a slide show, or a CDrom as an SVCD, or VCD. One word of warning though, many older DVD players will be twitchy about the medium being used, IE DVD+ or DVD-, and even down to brand name dislikes. A straight directory of pictures, like a data disc of images, won't normally play though. You will need to do some rendering. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. Aw Dave, I didn't mean to rile anyone personally, I just wanted to make the point that people should think carefully in such a situation. Yep, I am very much aware of the extra training you have done, and I did read your reply. I even added the caveat to the effect that my statements didn't apply to those who have actually saught formal training to support their concealed carry practices. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 3. "Yup - simplistic generalizations are incorrect and hurtful. Here's a couple: All cops are corrupt and bad All dems are closet communists or closet aristocrats All republicans put corporate profits before decency All environmentalists are violent nutjobs" Engineers are boring. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. You are going to be using muscles you aren't used to using, so take your favourite muscle relaxant...whatever form that may be. I found skiing easier to get to grips with than the board, but that's what I learned first. Either way you are going to fall over quite a lot, so leave the ego at home (if you actually have one!) and just enjoy learning a new game.
  5. PAYG, or contract? I got a Motorola V3 about a fortnight ago on contract with O2 and I like it a lot.
  6. "especially after we destroyed them at the world cup....." Some of us a burdened with the curse of supporting Scotland. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 7. "When I'm in a confrontation situation - I'm maintaining the status quo - while thinking of the quickest, safest, easiest way to kill the person confronting me, because I beleive that they're thinking the same way I am. If they're not - then they're in deep shit." Substitute "easiest way to kill the person confronting me" with " easiest way to end the confrontation" and we are on the same page. "I do struggle to identify with being the store keeper though." I really can't visualise you being the store keeper either, I just don't think its in your make up(I mean that in the best possible way).
  8. Just to put in context, the English rugby team have had a disappointing start to their grand slam campaign.... Shame really. Kinda spoils the effect of the attachment -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. "Some people's performance is poor, and some of those die as a result of those poor desisions. Others think very clearly and very fast, and make good, accurate desisions and good judgements with flawless execution of the task at hand." Many people wrongly assess their own skills and abilities, the incidents forum is full of examples. Hell, even professionals can make a questionable judgement call in situations like this. I reckon you and a few of the other posters here have had formal training for the scenario described in the original posting, and as such could be considered 'qualified' to engage a perp in the scenario. I do wonder how many people who have said they would engage actually have formal training though.....and whether their assessment of their own ability to handle such a situation is accurate, and realistic. Lets look at this scenario another way, you are the store keeper being held up, the gun is being pointed at you, do you want someone possibly jeopardising your survival chances because they reckon they could 'have a go'..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 10. "On only one of the flights on 9/11 did they rise up and fight back. " Not many survived although point taken, it could have been worse. Thousands of people have survived hijackings, this is the only recorded instance that I can think of where people 'had a go', everyone died. So I'm trying to follow your rationale....... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 11. "So tell us; how often have people with concealed handgun licenses shot someone wrongfully in the process of defending themselves? " Och come on John, I'm sure you have access to better facts, statistics, and reports than I do.....In fact, I'm willing to wager the ubiquitous pull up cord that you actually have some decent figures at your fingertips. Although, you'd really have to include all accidental and wrongful deaths for such a comparison to mean anything. for example...http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3609598.stm Not really an accident, but not good....whichever way you read it. Have a good hiking trip.
  12. "Thats why I like the idea of training before being allowed to carry." I can accept that, what I can't really accept is the thought of 100 untrained airline passengers, toting firearms on regular flights. Very few people are allowed to carry weapons on board flights, so the 911 comparison is a wee bit asinine, and basically non sequitur. Back to training for firearm concealed carry, wouldn't that require registration, and some form of administration? Again I can cope with that. A whole lot of folk here don't like the idea of it though.. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 13. "but until you come back and get on a motorcycle and go cruising with me through the loop and 45 and 290 on a bike...you ain't seen scary!" Now your talking Bro, me and you and a brace of fine looking cruising hogs....That's definitely scary.
  14. Are Dallas and Chocago similar sized populations and have similar demographics Dave? I'm guessing so... FWIW, I never experienced any stressful situations or feared for my safety whilst in Texas. Apart from driving on the loop. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 15. "There were no witnesses to the shooting, so the case turns on expert medical testimony, very little physical evidence, and whether the jury believes the defense." Surely the burden of proof must lie with the prosecution, and the proof has to be 'beyond reasonable doubt', is that the case here? Based on that, the cop will probably walk. Rightly so in a society where people are innocent till proven guilty. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 16. Should be over mainland USA by now. edit, just checked his progress, should be landing at Salina about 1.17 pm local time. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 17. "Jumping out of a plane puts you at risk of injury or even death every time, therefore it is prudent to have a reserve that might protect you or save your life… " The main problem with this analogy is that the use, or misuse of my reserve is less (ignoring premature deployment scenarios) likely to place others in peril, so its not really a good analogy for concealed carry etc. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 19. "I love them, they crack me up." A while ago, there was a fad over here for kidnapping gnomes and taking them on trips, taking 'tourist' photos of them sending back postcards to their owners saying how they were enjoying their vacation etc. Then secretly returning them, unharmed to their original onwers c/w with holiday pics. Kinda fun.. I like the 'rude gnomes'. http://www.prankplace.com/gnomes.htm http://www.cafepress.com/tbdrunks/35650 -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. "There is practically no good to come from trying to be a hero, however there is a whole lot of bad that can come from it." Its bound to be difficult to resist the urge to 'have a go' though. I know a little of your character, and have a fair idea of your sense of right and wrong (I mean this in the best possible way, you and I share many opinions what is and is not right). So I find it hard to believe that you would not want to remain uninvolved in such a situation. I know I would be in a tight moral spot if I was in a situation to affect the final outcome of the scenario described.... A lot of people here were praising the actions of 'heros' who got involved in the court shooting incident from Texas recently. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1503384;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread As for a self defence situation, we in the UK have 3 tests which must all be satisfied for a claim of self defence to be valid (if I got the Sherriff's[ a Scottish judge] briefing at my recent jury duty correct). You must be in immediate danger, a clear and present threat if you like. You must have exercised every reasonable means to escape or even avoid the situation in the first place. The means of self defence must not be disproportionate to the threat. I'm pretty sure a similar set of qualifications must exist for you guys..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. "Unfortuantely, there are many political groups in this country that do want to take away our firearms." The other issue is that of governments looking to their neighbours to see how they approach issues such as gun control. So you have the resident pro gun folks constantly trying to persuade, say, us Brits to change our laws, so that the US govt won't hold our legislation up as the 'way to do it'. Even though it has been agreed that a great many factors influence any individual society's attitude towards weapons ownership and control. The anti-gunners are guilty of doing this as well. What we need is more tolerance of different approaches, and the realisation that our societies are different, not necessarily any better than each other, just different. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 22. Try http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/videotutorial/tut_premierepro.htm Some folks here seem to think its okay, but I've never felt the need to visit. Alternatively, post specific problems once you have the basics.
