  1. If your not worried about presentation, 1 or 2 kitchen trash bags work well. You can also use a vacuum to suck out all the air in the bag to make it as small as possible. Getting a 170 in a medium flat rate box is usually not a problem and anything bigger fits in a large flat rate with that system. 2. They are actualyy shot and a half capwells and they don't release them and activate their reserve. They just pull their reserve if they have a malfunction. I'll just say you'll probably use your reserve before he does! We're not fucking flying airplanes are we, no we're flying a glorified kite with no power and it should be flown like one! - Stratostar
  3. I'll share the details when I get them, it was a fairly normal online transaction with the seller that did not know much about it, but his brother might. He is suppose to call me in a few days with hopefully more insight. I will be posting more pics soon as well. Glad you all have enjoyed the rig! 4. First of all, DZs have weight limits for the training for a few reasons, one of those being safety and not breaking the law. The majority of skydiving harness and containers have a max exit weight of 254lbs. Some are certified for 300lbs, it just depends on what they have. So if you think you are going to go in there and "fudge" the numbers a little, think again, most DZ's put you on a scale to verify what you wrote. Secondly and this maybe harsh and completely unfounded, but being 6'2" and 245 is probably not from lifting weights at 17. There are not that many big guys that jump and at your weight you will find a lot of challenges in buying gear or fitting on small planes to name a few. Stop watching YouTube videos and get outside or to a gym and excercise more than a "smidge", it will be a lot easier to lose the weight now than later and will make learning to skydive easier, you will be more comfortable, more flexible, and lesson the chance of you being injured. 5. Ok, Ok good job guys! It is in fact a Russell "Lobe" Parachute, made by the Russell Parachute Company, San Diego, CA. I have a lot of research to do on this, without very much info to be gained from the previous owner. I can't confirm the DOM since I have not opened it up yet to see if the canopy is marked in any way, I also do not know if it is silk or the cotton variety of canopy yet. The carry bag it came in (and I guess spent its ENTIRE life in) is marked with a different serial # than what is on the container. I'm not sure if the container stamp is factory russell, or the servicing dealer that packed it stamped it. I can tell you this for certain, it was packed in 1936 only once form the parachute dealer and has been like that way for up to 83 years! (If in fact built in 1930 like the carry bag states). The way the ripcord opens up the container with no pilot chute is very interesting. I would have (tried to) stow the ripcord, but the bungee inside the ripcord pocket has long since given up the fight to hold anything, so the ripcord will not stay in unfortunetly. The other interesting note about this container is the D-rings on the main lift webs, I initially thought this was a PEP, but after looking in Poynters, I noticed Russell had made a "Trainer" container that allowed a chest reserve to be fitted on the front!!! So could this be one of the oldest "dual" parachute skydiving rigs in existance?!? Maybe! I haven't figured out when/where/how I'm going to open it up to inspect it, but if/when I do it will be fully documented since I do not think another one of these, in this conditon/state will be found anytime soon. Has anyone ever seen a Russell Lobe in person, either in a museum or personal collection? It would be interesting to know. 6. I've bought a few things from him. I think its not his full time job, but thats still no excuse for not getting any information about your helmet. I'm sure you will be ok, he has been around for quiet a while, just doesn't sell a whole lot. If you paid by paypal, you are fine for getting your money back. 8. Well I'd like to share with my fellow History and Trivia forum enthusiasts something pretty cool. I'll let you guess as to what it is, since most of us like the chance to test the 'ol brain matter or find a reason to pull out our poynters manual. I know who made it, thats all I'm saying! Have fun! http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e280/Gearpics/Vintage%20Parachute/ We're not fucking flying airplanes are we, no we're flying a glorified kite with no power and it should be flown like one! - Stratostar
  9. Well it turns out I had the wrong Bob Pope! I'm actually looking for Bob "Tree Bob" Pope, used to jump at Skydive Texas. No help so far from the Skydive Texas Alum Facebook page and called Skydive Dallas. Anyone? 10. It sounds like you have a communication problem. If you owe money to someone, keep them up to date on the situation and your progress/plan/timeline to repay them. Keeping all the info to yourself, making THEM call you or not returning their calls is what started this thread in the first place and makes you look like (or actually are) a thief. 12. Per your link: Our Pledge To You Every dollar contributed through this campaign will go toward funding the FlyNY project. If, for any reason, we are unable to go forward with the project, every contribution at and above the $250 level will be refunded pro rata. So your gonna keep my $100 if this does nothing...um, no thanks. 13. I've sent out a few messages, but have not got a reply for anyone. Does anyone know how to get a hold of Bob Pope D-2162, I'm guessing the one from TX. Thanks! 14. If they ship it out of state, then you save the taxes, close family member/ friend in a nearby state? Just a thought. We're not fucking flying airplanes are we, no we're flying a glorified kite with no power and it should be flown like one! - Stratostar
  15. If you can try on an Infinity, or better yet jump one that fits you, you would be doing yourself a service. My experiences were that an Infinity i bought was longer than the Javelin I was used to jumping (both made to fit me) both fit a 170 main/160 reserve. The Infinity was pretty bomb proof and you could pick up the rig by the main closing flap and it wouldn't open (but opens like a charm in the air). I ended up sticking with the Javelin, I like the the shorter rig for my body style. Try before you buy will go a LONG way, no matter what anyone says on here. 19. Some people would hear jumped for 4-5 years, probably making 300-350 jumps and not give to much credit. In those days though, with the planes and the gear, he did good. Blue Skies Mr. Springer! 20. I've done them in the air, but the wind tunnel is also a good place to practice them. You can only help your buddies until pull time, hopefully they studied. We're not fucking flying airplanes are we, no we're flying a glorified kite with no power and it should be flown like one! - Stratostar

  22. I've taken a guy on his 11th tandem before. He had also done some tunnel time, but of those 11 only 3-4 were "learning" jumps. I was more than happy to teach him everything I could. You really just have to ask and if you don't get the response you like, then find another TI, or find another DZ. Maybe go during the week if they have that option when things are a little slower. You said it best here, don't settle for a ride, it is your money! Does the DZ or one in the area offer Static line or IAD (Instructor Assisted Deployment) as a means of learning? It is a little slower paced than AFF and you don't have to worry about the free fall/ deploying for yourself part right off the bat. You may want to check it out. I generally recommend the option if someone is not ready for the multi-tasking of AFF or needs to learn in smaller chunks. 24. The camera man was more than likely on his main as you can see a frame with the cutaway cable going up the back of his yellow risers. Also, the color of the main (multi-colored) usually means a main, although some older reserves (Raven for example) could be used as both a main and reserve, but most reserves are a solid color. My search foo is weak tonight, I'm pretty sure I've seen this posted on here, but I can't find the thread.
