  1. Thanks to you and Arv for the black metal suggestions. I'm alwways looking to check out new metal (new to me anyways). I'll pick up something by Anaal N. and Behexen. As far as workout music, nothing beats Slayer. Here's an old school version of Hell Awaits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=443t5ahxC-w
  2. Due to new regulations at work, I can't take a public stand one way or the other on this issue. But I just thought I'd point out that while most conservatives still seem to be in favor of the "war on drugs," there is a growing minority of conservative thinkers in favor of legalization. http://www.newsweek.com/2010/10/25/the-conservative-case-for-legalizing-pot.html http://old.nationalreview.com/12feb96/drug.html From the National Review article: "Things being as they are, and people as they are, there is no way to prevent somebody, somewhere, from concluding that ``NATIONAL REVIEW favors drugs.'' We don't; we deplore their use; we urge the stiffest feasible sentences against anyone convicted of selling a drug to a minor. But that said, it is our judgment that the war on drugs has failed, that it is diverting intelligent energy away from how to deal with the problem of addiction, that it is wasting our resources, and that it is encouraging civil, judicial, and penal procedures associated with police states. We all agree on movement toward legalization, even though we may differ on just how far."
  3. What in the world is going on with the French team on the hill in Rounds 9 & 10??? I know they are the World Champs and I mean no disrespect, but wow, this was not good. http://www.skyleague.com/pages/news/showArticles.php?story=2139
  4. There is some discussion of techniques for the new blocks here: http://www.skyleague.com/pages/news/showArticles.php?story=2118
  5. Local newspapers (Tribune, Sun-Times), local TV news (ABC or NBC), and google news when I'm goofing of at work.
  6. I played hockey for a lot of years. Never at a high level, I admit, but I was in the sport for a long time. I've been on both sides of blowout games, and virtually every time, the team on top would back off the gas a bit about halfway through the second period. It was never obvious, like the winning team would just play keep-away with the puck or anything, it was just that the winning team would just slow everything down a little. Now I don't know how many of you out there have played men's league hockey, but even at the lower levels, things could get pretty intense. But everyone realized that there was a time to back off. It's amazing to me that the coach of the winning team in this basketball game, and the players, could not see that. I'm not suggesting that they should have quit scoring or intentionally missed baskets. But the fact that they scored so many points indicates that they didn't back off at all. To me, that is bad sportsmanship and a lack of class.
  7. For those who are interested, here is a link to case documents filed in the Illinois Supreme Court. http://www.state.il.us/court/SupremeCourt/SpecialMatters/2011/111773.asp The Ill. Supreme Ct. will hear the case on an expedited basis. Because of new regulations at work, I cannot comment publicly on the merits of this case. In the unlikely event anyone is interested in my opinion on the case, p.m. me.
  8. We have this holiday so that we can honor an American hero. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbUtL_0vAJk
  9. I loved the movies, and thought the TV show was one of the best things out there. It was a shame it got cancelled after only 2 seasons. Just a quick correction, Lena Heady played Sarah Connor in the TV show. Stephanie Jacobson played Jessie, a resistance fighter who was Derek's boyfriend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminator:_The_Sarah_Connor_Chronicles My vote is for Lena Heady. I thought she really showed how heavy the burden of being Sarah Connor would have been, but with a dose of quiet determination.
  10. NASA's report may not be good science. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20101208/sc_yblog_thelookout/scientists-poking-holes-in-nasas-arsenic-eating-microbe-discovery I take no position on the scientific or religious arguments made in this thread.
  11. I'll avoid the political issues here, and just point out that this is a handwritten "pro se" suit. In other words, the guy filed the suit himself, without an attorney. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20022802-504083.html Carry on.
  12. Yeah, Roethlisberger is such a great guy, I can certainly see why you'd root for that team. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/crime/ben-roethlisbergers-bad-play
  13. I believe this was covered in the prior thread, so I won't belabor the point. Dave is right -- you can minimize your liability as an instructor by following the rules and using common sense. But if a student gets hurt on your watch, even if you were doing everything right, even if there is a solid waiver, you can still get sued. You'll probably win, but it may well cost you thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars in attorneys fees to defend the suit. The only way to avoid instructor lawsuits 100% is not to instruct.
  14. The folks at the Creation Museum seriously believe that the earth was created in 6 days, and that human beings and dinosoars coexisted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creation_Museum http://creationmuseum.org/
  15. "Tell me what the acceptable dose would be. Tell me what the maximum dose is. Tell me where there are guidelines to follow. I would like to be as sure as you are." That's really an unfair way to argue. In your initial post, you asserted that the child almost died. Others have argued against your position. The burden is therefore now on you to provide evidence in support of your position. So, what evidence do you have that this child's life was in danger? We are all aware that the child was taken to a hospital. But it does not necessarily follow that the child was in danger of dying. So let's see the evidence in support of your position. A rant by Nancy Grace doesn't count, by the way.
  16. A quick google search indicated that there has never been a death attributed solely to marijuana overdose, and that the amount of marijuana it would take to overdose at all is astronomically high. I don't doubt that the child in the story needed medical attention, but it seems unlikely that the child was near death. http://www.drugwarfacts.org/cms/node/58 http://my.auburnjournal.com/detail/135243.html By the way, I did a Google news search on this incident, and the only report that indicated that the child was near death was the one from Nancy Grace. She has a history of blowing things out of proportion, and you really shouldn't take her seriously. http://www.kval.com/news/national/103887793.html
  17. Here is a thread about instructor liability. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3262506;search_string=liability;#3262506 Yes, it is a real problem, and you should seriously consider the potential risk before instructing students.
  18. Whoever sent you this pm is an idiot. Ignore his "advice".
  19. Here's a story about a guy who racked up about $40K in student loans, which is much less than the girl in the NYT story. But this guy indicates that 4 years at Loyola Chicago costs $125K, not including room and board. If you go to a private school and take out loans for everything, the $170K the girl racked up is well within reach. Of course, whether it's wise to accumulate so much debt is debatable. I'm just saying it's not hard to do. http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2010/05/23/buried-under-student-loan-debt-one-post-grads-story/
  20. I understand that this is a serious problem, and concede the federal government needs to do more to protect Arizona. However, the fact that certain areas are overrun by criminals is not terribly unusual in the United States, particularly in urban areas. I used to live in Chicago, now I'm in the suburbs. There are areas of that city I would never go into, because they are controled by gangs. An old friend of mine lived in the city, in a pretty decent area, but not far from a bad area. Coming home from dinner out once we took a shortcut through a dicey area. A Chicago cop stopped us and told us that a gang war was underway in the area, and that we should not be here. We thanked him and left quickly. My point is, the cop had basically admitted that the area we were in was not safe, and there wasn't much that could be done except to advise people to stay away. Again, I'm not minimizing the problem in AZ. I'm just saying that this is not unusual.
  21. Justice Kagan will almost certainly have to recuse herself from the case when the SC hears it.
  22. Great observations and great questions. I'm posting a link to an article about a case where some Great Lakes states sued Illinois in order to force Illinois to close river locks to keep an invasive species of fish out of Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes. This case went straight to the Supreme Court. Your question as to why the AZ case did not go straight to the SC is a good question, and I don't have the answer. Maybe lawrocket or the other Andy would know more about your question. Anyhow, here's the link. http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2010/01/19/19greenwire-supreme-court-denies-injunction-in-great-lakes-44940.html
  23. Thats what started this thread. Go back and read the entire first post. OK, dude. I was trying to answer your question in a reasonable way, but I guess that didn't work. So here's a new answer. Sure, state militias have the right to wage war. Why don't you start one up and lead the charge over the border into Juarez? Let me know how it goes.
