  1. man, that was the most awesome shit i have heard in a while. and then to find out that she shouldn't have been at work that day, and they just put her there at the last minute? i don't think the leos could do the same thing, it was the fact that she was just a regular person who showed empathy and actually cared that did the trick. i have been around mental illness before; if it got this bad, just hearing that compassion can make a difference. or not and people die. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  2. what was that one line from fight club? the one about not being a unique snowflake, the same decaying matter as everyone else? _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  3. eight pages of shit and most of it doesn't even relate to the topic...that being said, simply the act of being black in a black neighborhood would be reasonable suspicion if the person were wearing known gang colors or something. my bad, we were talking about zebras, it's been so damn long since the original post i forgot. i don't think that would be completely correct either. just pointing out that when you start putting exceptions into laws, you gotta be careful, you never know where you may end up going with them. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  4. welcome to the world of being an adult. pretty much 99% of the adult working population (my own numbers) is in the same boat. even if you own your business, you could ask yourself, "can i be replaced?" and the answer would be yes. if you are lucky enough to do what you enjoy as a career, as i do now and i am also a business owner, i am under no illusions that i am the only one in my area doing it. even though i now have 3 employees and am in the process of hiring at least 3 more, it still feels like a house of cards. life is not all about work, family and friends are much more important. if you feel the need to derive satisfaction and self esteem boosts from work, then you need an attitude adjustment. take a vacation and visit friends, or maybe just a camping trip in the woods, they have those everywhere. a little time back to nature always recharges me. anyway good luck with it. and honestly, my first thought of a reply when i started typing this was, "suck it up and drive on" but those words didn't come out when i started typing. that's how i know i'm right on this one, unless you're deathly afraid of camping... _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  5. i think you are missing the point. we don't care too much about zebras doing anything to other zebras. but when a cop stops a person for simply being in a particular place and frisks him, when that person was doing nothing suspicious, it is wrong. now, the terry pat has its place. i have nothing against it when a cop wants to talk to you. but when they abuse this and use anything collected during this pat down to charge you with, this is where it crosses the line. the results of such a search should be thrown out, period. i have no problem with a cop not wanting to get shot, but if they find a pocket full of drugs when ensuring their safety, this should constitute an illegal search without probable cause. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  6. if you're getting a smartphone, get a blackberry. they're getting cheaper now and the camera has a time lapse feature, really cool. and you can put a real password on it, not just a pin number. all the cool security features you would expect from blackberry. i just hope the company survives... _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  7. i wouldn't know anything about wandering a battlefield unarmed and high, but i did do a night combat drop with the 82d one time where myself and most of the plane were trippin'. talk about a time...trying to run off a parachute at about 500 feet in total darkness is hard enough when you're straight, almost impossible while trippin'. i think my chute reinflated at around 50 feet. i just had time to drop my equipment and plf. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  8. since you are a libertarian, please try to explain to me how these dui checkpoints have been proven constitutional? it sounds to me much like a previous post, "show me your papers". just because they stop everyone? bullshit. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  9. this is annoying, when as you say, someone quotes an entire page and all the replies with it, but even worse are the people who say they can't use the url button. "i can't make a clicky" bull shit. f'ing idiots are just too lazy to try. maybe it's just me, but if there were something on a forum that i couldn't do and everyone else could, i would be so ashamed to post anything i would probably leave and never post another thing. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  10. perhaps, but since you are not the only person reading this thread, quade's point is valid. i, for one, didn't click on the link to the reply, and i suspect a lot of others who don't really care that much did either. so for me, and those as lazy or apathetic as me, the clarification was in order. now to the point of the thread, i too loved the show. and it was very cheesy at times. but more to the point, there would have had to be a fundamental shift in thinking well before the constitution was drafted, because as i understand, this was one of the amendments which was not very much debated. for the rest of them to have remained as is would be highly unusual. closer to reality would have been to leave out the bill of rights altogether. this would be closer to the way it would have been, of course this is just an opinion. as for the results of 250+ years like that, that is thinking material. thank you for the exercise to the brain. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  11. thanx to all for the replies. i was thinking as well that as she is just a tad older, she would be a bit safer. very wonderful woman who was a hippie in the late 60's, she actually gave birth to her 3 children on the farm in tn. and the first thing i told her was to check the places you mentioned regarding travel advisories. the main reason for posting here was to get any firsthand accounts of people who actually may have visited the area. my limited research shows me that it is much safer now than in the past, but i wouldn't bet a good friend's safety on internet searches. and then there is the danger of inadvertently running afoul of local laws or customs. she may decide not to go, her son is telling her it's not safe, but her daughters are all for it. i told her to be very careful and not too trusting and to learn a bit of the language first. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  12. i have a friend who is a midwife and she had the chance to take a volunteer job in cambodia. my first reaction was go for it, it's not that dangerous anymore. but then again, i'm not a female whose 50. i was looking for opinions from anyone who has visited recently, mainly on whether it's safe, but if there is anything she should stay away from, that would be nice to know. thanx. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  13. it's called history, and those who don't study it are doomed to repeat it. myself, i would prefer to just overthrow the current administration and start over. maybe get another 100 or so years before the corruption gets too bad. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  14. wtf??? you think he's joking? just ask any of the losers, only the winners write the history books. had it not been for my dad, i'd have believed everything they told us about the indians, etc., etc. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  15. if you look long enough in the right places, you can find reports saying that drinking piss is healthy and good for you. does that mean that i will do it? and it wasn't too long ago that lead in paint was acceptable. and etc, etc, etc. dumping any kind of chemicals far under the ground is not smart. it doesn't take too much common sense to realize that some of them will seep into ground water, however long it may take. and intentionally causing the ground that far down to move around is not too smart either. but, if you can find studies that show it's safe, then i'm ok with it, and you should be too. the govt wouldn't lie to us, right? _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  16. typical of the attitude of today's society of "not my fault". _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  17. doesn't really matter whether he chose it or not, he got stuck there. and it wasn't his fault. but he got his asylum, and good for him. i just today talked to a woman whose son was a uav pilot. she said when he joined, he was super patriotic, but after serving his enlistment, he was almost ready to renounce his citizenship. it's typical of what happens to people with morals when they finally find out what goes on at the highest levels of govt. at least when i went in, i listened to my dad who warned me about it. and you can tell the ones who have no morals. they go really far in politics. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  18. i am pretty sure that you don't have to swear an oath to work for a security contractor. there are all kinds of other things you do, but swearing an oath is not one of them. and he is a traitor to his country exactly like a long list of people like jefferson, franklin, washington, etc. i just read an article on boing boing that talks about the fbi buying malware to put on smartphones. reported by the wall street journal. http://boingboing.net/2013/08/02/fbi-pays-for-malware-so-it-can.html and this whole thing they dreamed up about closing embassies in the middle east, it is way too neat, too much like a movie script. and one comment, "when we put out this information, they usually decide not to do the attack". i can't remember who said it, but it tells me that they put out misinformation, and when nothing happens, they say "we stopped them by using the surveillance you are trying to stop." _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  19. do you have an idea that will actually work? if so, let me hear it. i'd love to be wrong about this one, however, history will back me on it. there are too many examples for me to start listing any of them here. and if you don't believe me, well it's still a free country in your head, if not anywhere else. for the time being. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  20. get real. letters are going to do nothing for anyone. look at how the govt is spinning the snowden thing out of control, they actually have most of the people believing them, or had until this latest revelation proves him right about what he could do. the federalist papers did the trick before the revolution, right? they didn't actually have to fight anyone, did they? didn't old king george say we were right and just granted us freedom? what a bunch of sheep. you write some letters, i'll make sure to prepare myself. and in 20 years, let me know how those letters went. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  21. well, at least you've finally realized that all of them are basically the same. now, when can we count on you to join the revolution? that's the only way to actually change anything for the better. of course, it probably won't go anywhere. americans are too weak now, bunch of fucking pussies. oh, well. at least i can dream... _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  22. this is my fix for it, as posted in another thread: the only real fix for it is a complete overhaul. we can leave the constitution in place as is, declare a 1 year period of martial law, do away with the electoral system(not needed in this day of instant communication), scrap the two party system, eliminate all lobbyists, and hold general elections. the only addition needed is the elimination of any financial gain from a politician while in office. all investments cease, all interest is frozen, and no additional investments can be made for two years after leaving office. my original solution to the government problem called for a special session of congress where all elected officials in dc were in the same place at the same time and a couple of teams of seals were sent in to eliminate them all. then after the elections, the newly elected were warned that if they fucked up too bad, another "special session" would be called. that would do the trick. at least for a little while. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  23. i don't know of anyone in this country that doesn't believe it. do you? this government is so fucked up right now it's pathetic. the only real fix for it is a complete overhaul. we can leave the constitution in place as is, declare a 1 year period of martial law, do away with the electoral system(not needed in this day of instant communication), scrap the two party system, eliminate all lobbyists, and hold general elections. the only addition needed is the elimination of any financial gain from a politician while in office. all investments cease, all interest is frozen, and no additional investments can be made for two years after leaving office. my original solution to the government problem called for a special session of congress where all elected officials in dc were in the same place at the same time and a couple of teams of seals were sent in to eliminate them all. then after the elections, the newly elected were warned that if they fucked up too bad, another "special session" would be called. that would do the trick. at least for a little while. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  24. it isn't like it actually has changed at all. the only difference is now it is more widely known. remember the detainment camps in ww2? or the treatment of former slaves after the civil war? or the trail of tears? etc, etc.... _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  25. wow. just because you think it can't be done, you think we shouldn't even try? fucking pathetic approach to any sort of change. and do you really believe anyone in the us has any more concern for the environment than anyone else? i could show you lots of coal mines around here that prove otherwise. if they can get away with ignoring the rules, they can. it's too expensive. and every once in a while you hear about the results. and if yu have been keeping up with any of the latest advances in 2d materials, you wouldn't be nearly so quick to say there is no alternative to fossil fuels. the technology is not here yet for some things, but to quit trying is just wrong. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
