  1. kind of strange, but they say 100,000 here, but today show says 300,000. and they won't tell anyone how much of it leaked, just that the levels are concerning. and that's after it' s been diluted in the freaking river. you'll have that when you get your drinking water out of a river with that many chemical plants along the banks. and it got dicey last night, there were fights over water at at least three locations i know of. at least we can open our home to our friends and let them wash and fill up jugs at our place. it's unaffected, we get our water from a different river. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  2. man, this sucks. good thing i have city of st albans water. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/w-va-customers-told-water-chemical-spill-article-1.1571664 _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  3. all i know is that it happened and was explained in great detail, you should look it up to see how close you were. it is possible and it does not matter which kind of state you are from. in certain cases, this being one of them, the benefit of the whole far, far outweighs the few. either stay on course to go out in a blaze of glory, or change just a tad now, give up just a little, and fix this thing while we can. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  4. it was in the rolling stone, couple of years ago, way too vague for me to find a citation, i don't care enough to look it up. that should be enough for you to find it if you choose. i don't care because you summed it up right nicely: you said "It is of course much easier for 6 retired legislators with no constituents to represent, and of course no accountability for the near or long term consequences. " that is the point i was trying to make. these asshats need to put everything aside and do their job. so some of them won't get elected next year, and some people may get their feelings hurt, big deal. and it's hard to remember the details, but they didn't touch unemployment, welfare, or social security. lesson here, it can be done. same thing with unemployment benefits. the real world solution is here, right in front of their faces, but they won't do what they are paid to do. they should be fired and banned from politics forever, after having their benefits stripped. and that is a lot nicer than the real penalties i support, those all involve coffins after the penalties. for all of them. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  5. reality is the article i read one time about 6 former congressmen, 3 of each party. they threw out party ideology, and pork, and came up with a balanced budget in 3 days. in 3 fucking days. you can say it's harder than that, and it may well be. but i could do it, have no doubts about that, and it would be completely self funded and fair. but then, so could almost anyone here if there was enough effort put into it. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  6. i strongly recommend malwarebytes and ms security essentials. the only thing with malwarebytes is it stops updating soon after you start using it, unless you pay for it. it is well worth the price, you can get it cheap here: http://discuss.howtogeek.com/t/malwarebytes-sale-price/8905. i use it a lot on virus cleaning, never as a constant thing. never pay for antivirus software, there is no reason to with the good free ones out there. that being said, some new exploits get by all of them at first, some are better than others for updating databases. another good scanner is msert, you can get it from http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx, but you have to get it each time you use it, it's only good for 10 days. i use this and malwarebytes on almost every scan i do for viruses. i recommend never using ccleaner or iobit unistaller, unless you know what you're doing. they can both hose your system with a quickness. and never install more than one antivirus product, they fight each other. hijack this is very good, as is tdsskiller, combofix, roguekiller, gmer and fixzeroaccess. do not use any of these unless you have a recent backup. and also, ms has a bootable scanner that you can download and burn to a cd to get rid of really nasty things. it lets you boot into a cleaner to remove root kits and stuff. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  7. maybe the govt should bring back the ccc. my grandpa used to talk about how much that helped him in the depression. he ended up retiring from a good job and was a very productive member of society, not to mention a true hero from ww2. i would really support a program like that, giving something in exchange for something. if done correctly, this could actually work today. and it would help lots of people, you would just have to expect that a certain number of people would take advantage and ignore those few. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  8. i did not know that. well, then, that changes everything, not. you still have around 85% not unemployed, on a very conservative estimate, that could be used to cover the small percentage of unemployment which goes past the norm to the "emergency" level. again i ask, what is the problem with this system? administration. how much thinking did it take for me to come up with a viable solution? about 30 seconds worth, i can assure you. and this is the reason i advocate putting the government back in the hands of the people. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  9. my condolences. it always sucks when you lose someone. i am glad (though not surprised) that you cared enough to get to know her. it makes it harder when someone dies, but it is well worth it while they are still around. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  10. i think it is all like that, hence the federal unemployment. this is what a lot of people are so easily forgetting to mention, it's not a government funded program. it's funded by employers paying into a fund, the govt just administers (read: steals from) the fund. sure, there are some negligible costs, but hey, it's a government program. i don't agree that it should be permanent, but it can take a year to find a job sometimes, if you hold out for what you are used to. i have taken jobs working at a car wash and at convenience stores to pay the bills, never fast food though. i think 9 months is plenty for unemployment. now, i don't have the statistics, nor do i know where you would find them, but common sense will help out a little here. with around 7 - 12 % unemployment (depending on who you hear) this leaves a bunch of people paying into a fund with a few drawing on it. sounds to me like it should be not only self sustaining, but profitable as well, at least enough to cover administrative costs. if it doesn't, hell let me administer it, i could have it fixed in two years. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes

  13. i don't need help. i can handle myself. while i will admit to not having the same kind of wartime experience as anyone in vietnam, or any of the previous wars, it was no cake walk in the middle east, either in desert storm, enduring freedom, or iraqi freedom. the one thing i miss most is my hearing. that's the only sore spot with me. and it sounds like you are more like me than you would want to admit. it's your attitude that i have issue with. it may be ok for you to just blindly listen to what persons of authority tell you, and you may be alright with giving up freedom in exchange for security, but i assure you sir that i am not. like i said, i have started over 7 times, and not once have i asked for a handout from anyone, nor would i have accepted one. i have had some pretty shitty things going on in my life, but i can't complain. a lot better have it a lot worse. i am in one piece and still have my health (mostly). i'm not asking anyone for anything, except to leave me the hell alone and let me do what i want, until it interferes with others. all i want is for everyone to do their fair share. some make a lot more money, some less. corporations should pay, not move money offshore to dodge taxes. all executives should have to forfeit any bonuses to the government if they have been bailed out. this is not any type of communism, socialism, nor fascism. it is simply common sense. and for all that, your attitude still sucks, but i for one am glad that you are allowed to express it. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  14. you know, after we were done in the desert (desert storm), they were asking for volunteers to stay and ship the vehicles back. this prick actually tried to get me to volunteer. and she actually took the children with her when she left the country. i didn't see them again for 8 or 9 years. but my daughter came to live with me when she turned 16 and we have a wonderful relationship now. i am a grandpa and she has another on the way. my son has one also but i haven't talked to or seen him in 14 years. what can you do? and in true karma form, he was a recruiter after leaving germany, but about 2 years into his tour, he had a wreck and flipped his car while drinking and has been in a wheelchair ever since. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  15. honestly, i have never given it much thought, certainly not enough to search for studies about the effects of thc. i doubt that i will to be honest. and while i realize that self studies aren't really proof of anything, i am also taking into account interactions with a lot of different smokers over the years and common sense (gasp!). and i am not arguing at all that the effects last longer than the time one feels high, just that it certainly does not last overnight. not at all like the effects of alcohol which can last overnight and all day the next day. no self study here (only), studies of a lot of others as well. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  16. having just read the replies here, one thing jumps to the front of my mind. are the surgeries tax-deductable, like donations to charity? if so, then look no farther than that, along with the performing enough to keep his license. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  17. if you actually believe this, then you sir, are a fool who has much greater issues than i can ever hope to address in a simple internet forum. have you ever seen any issue from the side you do not take? i truly hope that anyone with such a narrow minded view such as this did not reproduce in order to perpetuate such draconian views. consider this: one can get a divorce due to a cheating wife (like i did), obtain a great job driving a truck, only to find that he was manipulated by the moving industry which only hired him to handle the summertime influx of people moving only to leave him with no freight or way to pay for his truck in the fall, thereby forcing him into bankruptcy. then, when he seeks to enlist into the military to support himself, he finds that he has to sign away any chance of custody of his his children (and yes, it happened to me just like that). boom, bad credit. i am not crying about it, nor did i ever fall into a self loathing drug induced stupor. hell, i didn't complain much at all, it doesn't do any good. instead, i just quietly picked myself up, dusted myself off, and quietly carried on. i have started over more than 7 times in my life, and now, am a successful (paying the bills) small business owner, with shitty credit. so fuck you for thinking like that. people like you are part of the problem with this country. you sit up in an ivory tower thinking that you're better than anyone else and spout out opinions on how things should work. well, i am here to tell you that there are exceptions to every rule. not every homeless person is there because he can't do anything else, some would but circumstances have dealt them a series of unfortunate events. i know, i have been there. as long as people in charge in this country are being ran by big business and corporate lobbyists then we are doomed. and i for one am going to be quite comfortable when the shit hits the fan and the blood starts flowing. you or anybody else cannot take anything away from me that hasn't already been taken, more than once, i might add. and i bounced back. and if i want to smoke pot to keep me from killing someone or to deal with the ptsd and constant pain that i live with after 9 years of protecting sorry asses like you so that you can have the freedom to say or think what you want, then i will. i want to think that deep down you are not the narrow minded, selfish prick that you come across as on the internet. and due to my capability of placing myself in your shoes, i give you the benefit of the doubt and choose to believe that you are really a nice guy. but again, fuck you for thinking that way. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  18. one would only hope, however, it didn't happen that way. needless to say, as a 21 years old soldier just back from war, i was a little disheartened by the chain of command which knew of this affair and didn't do or say anything. shortly after he pcs'd, she went with him and then i found all this out. i was a little perturbed (to say the least), and i was given an article 15 for some bullshit. i was told by jag that i could have my pov license back, my rank and money restored, an inter-theater transfer, and my co and 1sg relieved. i chose the general discharge due to my views on the army at the time. fortunately, i went into the military 7 years later and had a wonderful time as a ssg in a special forces unit. due to my treatment by the nco corps, i was a much better nco because of it. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  19. yep. i've done both. that's all i need to have to show that there are no measurable effects. and i have done studies on myself to show this. there is a thing called the weaponeer, it is like a big pinball table with an m16 and simulated targets up to 300 m. we had one in the barracks when i was on active duty back in the early 90's. we used to get messed up and play with it sometimes. i have the results from being sober, drunk, and high. sober i got 35 out of 40. drunk, was a 22. high was a perfect 40, all head shots. i still have the printouts of those. and when i was in truck driving school, we had a driving simulator. again, personal experience here, again after hours. again, i was a much better driver high, and i even had a faster reaction time. not by much, but faster. and that was true in all types of weather. and anyone citing wikipedia for anything should search a little harder. there was a study i just read today but i can't find the link, let me look a little more and get back with it. in a nutshell, it showed just the opposite. even explained the reason tolerance builds up and how smoking more got you less high. http://arstechnica.com/science/2014/01/active-ingredient-in-pot-sets-off-a-feedback-that-reduces-intoxication/ and most of the studies up until the last few years are heavily biased and were put out to show how bad pot was, not surprising to find negative results. look at more recent ones, they are much more objective. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  20. and maybe, just maybe an employer has a right to do a background check, but a credit check? man, rights are being violated and people are not only rolling over and taking it, but actually going to great lengths to make up bullshit excuses to justify it. and piss tests are easy to cheat on if you know someone who is clean. unless you're in the military and they actually look at it. then you have to get a prosthetic. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  21. no, the point here was as stated: after smoking a joint at night, there are absolutely NO ADVERSE EFFECTS the next day. ever. at all. after getting drunk at night, there ARE ADVERSE EFFECTS the next day, even up to 20 hours later, depending on the amount that was drunk (drank?). and since there has been so much talk about legalizing, there have been more studies done on thc. i just read about how thc produces more (3000 times the normal amount) of some hormone that actually blocks the effects of thc. this explains why heavy smokers have less of an effect from thc, and also why you build up a tolerance. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  22. yeah, if you're a pilot. but if you work at, say a shoe store, then where is the public outcry and outrage when you sell someone the wrong shoe? and show me how a drug test can tell if you are actually ON drugs AT THAT TIME? you can't because those things don't exist. when they can, i will be a strong supporter of them, provided they are 100% accurate. i stand by my statement that what you do on your own time is your own business, so long as it does not affect others. say you're a pilot, and when you get out of the cockpit for the weekend you want to smoke a joint. you should be able to. if you want to smoke 10, you should be able to. then you should be able to go to work on monday and have no fear that you'll lose your job, because you are not hurting anyone, nor are yo putting anyone in jeopardy. so, yes, it is all about freedom. we have all given up most of our freedoms, little by little, and in the name of safety. it's sickening. kind of like that guy who gave the speech in a meeting on gun control. i loved his statement in the end, "my freedom trumps your dead". and it does. http://conservativepost.com/army-vet-3-minutes-destroy-obama-gun-control-plan-2/ _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  23. you are trying to compare apples and oranges. in the military (not sure about leo's) you give up a lot of rights, one of which says you can't just get up and go wherever you want to, without the proper authorization. another is that you do what they tell you, like piss in this cup, usually at 4 in the morning when they wake you out of bed and make you stand in formation when you have to piss really bad, but the latrines are off limits. i do not remember any cases where average citizens give up rights like this. and the supposition is not testing for drugs because the public is footing the bill, it's because you are in a position of authority, and carry guns, and are allowed to shoot people, so that you shouldn't be under the influence of drugs. now, it has been proven (no citation, experience here) that you can get blackout drunk (legally) and be totally out of commission the next day (legally), and everything is all right; or you can get so high you lay down and go to sleep, and be totally fine the next day. which officer would you prefer in an emergency situation? now, i am talking about mary jane here, not heroin or some other equally nasty substance. but i do not make allowances for those, nor would i provide exceptions for anything. my stance is: every legal citizen should have the same rights as every other legal citizen. no exceptions. what you do on your own time is your own business, so long as it does not affect somebody else. smoking pot at your house? ok. stealing to get money to buy pot? not ok. drinking alcohol? ok. driving drunk? not ok. we could take that bold statement and make it the supreme law of the land, and base all other laws on it, and do away with all lawyers and most politicians on the face of it. it could be applied equally to every person and corporation in this country and we would have a much better place. no more confusion. the only thing courts would be for is to determine if anyone else were affected. would it stop all crime? no. but it would make it pretty clear what is right and what is wrong. the one conflict i can see is abortion. hard to say whether the fetus would be considered "anyone else" and would have rights. i would lean towards if the fetus were able to sustain it's own life, then it's a person with the same rights. but if it had to be in an incubator for weeks in order to live, then no. but that would be a great debate no matter what. keeps it from being a utopian country. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  24. no, you are not remembering correctly. it started with no drug testing before employment, they would ask you if you could do the job and take you at your word that you would follow the rules on the job. then, started drug testing as a condition for employment, some say because people were getting high on the job or whatever. in reality, it was because insurance companies are evil. they say that drug users cost more money, so if you drug test, you won't have to pay as much in premiums. or companies would save money on insurance premiums or it was a requirement for government contracts to have an anti drug program. and i do believe that it was very hotly challenged in courts when first implemented, but i may be misremembering that, it was a long time ago. but to a lot of people now, they don't remember the times before the madness. so it is understandable. but this is what it's like when we start relinquishing our freedoms starting with the ones a lot of people can agree on, like this. you were a fool to argue against drug testing, a monster. then we gave up just a little more, and a little more, etc. until now people can't expect privacy on a phone call. or we can't go outside without someone watching you or tracking your movements with your cell phone. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
