  1. Yet another camera setup question. Picked up myself a PC1000 and gonna get a Cookie Mxv with blackbox. I was trying to decide what components to add on top. I plan to use it on a vast assortment of skydives from wingsuit to RW to freefall, if that makes a difference. Cameye seems cheap and vastly useful, so probably a must. But what about ring sight. Does it seriously improve the learning curve of learning to jump camera? If so, is the articulating bracket worthwhile? Also, is something like Item 'L1237' here necessary with an articulating bracket or at least extremely beneficial? Also, can anyone comment on the quality difference between Items 'L1360', 'L1236', and 'LB1242'? Is there a noticeable difference? Or for that matter, any advice on ring sight hardware is welcome. 2. Tink said a lot that I would just reiterate, so I'll just add a few things. First, if you consider yourself a good runner and have a decent amount of time before you plan to do a tri, then I would recommend an olympic distance tri. I did a sprint tri for my first and was let down. Most of the people doing a sprint are people who just do it for the fun of it and don't train. My first olympic distance tri, which was a month or so later, was more of what I expected and much happier for doing. My two half-ironmans were absolutely miserable, but would probably do one again. My brother has done 4 full ironmans, and I don't know how the hell he does it. As for gear and equipment, there is no need for a tri specific bike. I used a standard road bike for everything up to my last half-ironman. I got a softride, which is a tri specific bike, and it isn't really necessary unless you have a grand burning a hole in your pocket. A must for biking is to get clipless pedals and aero bars. Both are very nice for anything over 10-15 miles and you should be using them from the start of your training if you plan to use them in a race. Some other recommendations would be a trisuit and a heart rate monitor. Trisuits are far better than a separate trishorts and a top in my opion. Finally, a think a heart rate monitor is a must for tri training, if it isn't otherwise for running training. You have to run a 10K or half marathon after already having swam and biked a lot, so proper training is key. No matter what, I somehow loved doing my tris and wish I could do another in the near future.
  3. The company is actually no longer British Petroleum they are just BP or have referred to themselves as Beyond Petroleum now. This is one of many reasons for that name change. Don't think the major oil companies will die with the end of oil. They'll still be just as big. In fact BP is the leading producer of solar panels throughout the world. 6. Financial advice is one thing people should avoid giving when they don't have their facts straight. Publication 590 says the following: "You can make contributions to a Roth IRA for a year at any time during the year or by the due date of your return for that year (not including extensions)." i.e. if your non-extended due date is April 15, which the vast majority of individual filers have, then that is the latest you can fund an IRA. I don't have personal experience with AAII, but there are many brokerage services available (fidelity, vanguard, charles schwab come to mind as good ones) which will not charge for their advice and service. A service like this is better for a beginning investor than something like AAII or fool.com in my opinion, because it is difficult for a $25-50 annual fee to be cost effective on a small investment. 7. Small IRAs are pretty pointless in a stock trading account, by and large. Buy and holding one stock isn't a very good investment strategy for investment accounts, and frequently trading a small IRA reduces the account value each time you buy and sell. Mutual funds are run by people who know what they are doing...most individuals don't. Just my 2c. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  8. The problem with the sited article is we aren't at a peak oil stage. Ask anyone with actual knowledge of the oil industry and they will confirm this. While we have reached the point where our production exceeds our increase in proven reserves (and oil companies are putting a lot of money into exploration, as production is obviously going so well, so the reduction of proven reserves will not be as serious in the next 3-5 years as it has been recently), but that is far different than peak oil. We still have well over 50 years of oil at our current pace (even horribly conservative estimates put this at 25 years). Of course no one believes that an oil economy will last forever, but that is far different than what many academics believe, such as the one sited. Essentially our current problem is our lack of refinability, which fortunately for us living in a capitalistic society, will soon be fixed, because the fields are having no problems in terms of production. Check this out if you want an accurate article on the state of the oil industry, although they still have a very conservative view of the future of oilfield technology with respect to recovery factor, which over the past few years the improvement has been huge, just look at the brownfield (30+ year old wells) technology in the past two years. 9. I looked up my last house and it found the wrong house. Maybe it just did a shotty job of overlaying the diamonds on the map, but it looks like it just doesn't know where the address is at (as the diamonds overlay with the nearby houses, just using the wrong addresses). Also, the neighbors had a house that was considerably nicer and larger, yet it lists $50K less. I know how much the house was listing for a couple months before my house was sold ($70K the other way), so I'd add a vote for bad data. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

  11. Could you be a little more general? I assume you're talking about Reynolds transport theorem (of which the differential forms make up the Navier-Stokes equations, and given you are talking about fluid mechanics, this is probably the case), but who knows. It applies to any logical conservative property, i.e. mass, momentum, energy, heat. I recall it moreso in my thermo classes, but that's probably because I tended to fall asleep in my fluids classes. In fact, you can't destroy a fluid, so this seems more thermodynamically likely unless we are talking theoretically. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  12. How bad can it be, if it doesn't open like a Sabre and you don't hook it in? Oh, you don't mean the canopy. It opens worse! The cobalt is the definition of a two-stage opening. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

  14. You realize that SOS has nothing to do with main deployment, yes? SOS merely means that one handle both cuts away and pulls the reserve ripcord. My DZ has Wings with 2 handle systems that have the SOS system as part of it. Whether they pull cutaway or reserve handle, the system will operate in the order it should. I personally find this to be the best system for students to be on. Because I know of one case in my short career in which a student went straight to reserve when they had a slight nusiance (someone with at least 20 jumps too). Had the main not cutaway, that situation could have been very very bad. As for main deployment. My DZ used ripcords, as we were a static line dropzone, and it was far safer than to use static line assist (i.e. use hand deploy pilot chutes with a static line). I believe that with proper training and instructors who are willing to spend the time with students during transition from ripcord to hand deploy that it isn't a problem. 17. Back when I was at the Air Force Academy the friday night prior to the Navy-Air Force game, a group of five of us completely filled the Naval Academy middie's (who spent a semester with us) room with fish...man that thing smelled horrible. She got us back a few weeks later when she took all the balls from our mice (all 20 something of us in my class) for a week. That's a huge pain when you need to use it everyday. 18. 15K miles every 2 months. I live in a hotel. I have a year round rental with driver. I suppose it's different because I work in the same location for 36 weeks a year! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  19. Without knowing the seriousness of the violations, the people who are concerned with such violations are: FAA regulation violations should be reported to your local FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO). Address and phone number can be found here. USPA BSR violations should be reported to your USPA Regional Director. Check out this to find your RD based on state/region. I might suggest contacting your USPA RD first, as they might be able to put the violation into perspective, but if you disagree with them and feel strongly about it, then of course let your FAA FSDO know. Also, your S&TA should be spoken to, as BSR violations are that individuals responsibility more so than the DZO. I've personally never had to report a violation, but in a sport where student safety could be at hand (in which students may not realize the danger that is involved in a violation that they aren't expected to know) some violations can be very serious. 22. Gotta agree. I went through BCT back in 2000 and some, but not all changed, although I have a bit different perspective as a male christian. Did terms such as "heathen flight" live on? Yes, but I always heard them used in a jokingly, non-derogative manner; I suppose thin-skinned people might be seriously bothered by it. But the feeling of suck it up and drive on left hand-in-hand with the change of training at the academy, and really military wide, because West Point and the Naval Academy beat USAFA to the change by a few years. I was the last smack class to still have the old training and recognition, then again I'm sure you could say I didn't half half of what you did. The academy became much more feeling-friendly as they left their old ways behind, but I certainly never caught any of many of the feelings that so many complain about, nor did my Jewish or Muslim classmates who I've asked about since these religious issues came up. So were there some situations which weren't politically correct? Sure, but I've seen and heard far worse at the dropzone and I make nothing of it. 25. If you like your runwear other than the chaffing it causes, then get some body glide. It's a skin lubricant, that is used by a lot of triathletes, but I also use it just for running, particularly if it's really hot and I'm running long.
