  1. Too bad more people don't have this attitude. Not to critisize by any means, but why don't you have a RSL? Do you have a specific reason for not having or detaching yours? I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  2. I jump at Archway in Illinois and RW by far takes the win. Occassionally there are a few freefliers who do some small way stuff, but more often than not our freefly organizer is organizing RW loads instead. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  3. Maryland guys are fans of pop tops I see. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  4. While that may all be valid for controllers, it doesn't necessarily hold for pilots. The FAA publishes no specific hours, aside from the alcohol one, so the only published guidance (officially from the FAA) is what is provided above. Recommendations will be all over from flight surgeons to AOPA, but that doesn't equate to FAA ruling. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  5. I think ash dives have shown this not to be true. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  6. btw, codeine is a 3-6 hour drug, so this would indicate 12 hours. Again this isn't the FAA ruling, you will never know their ruling until they yank your license. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  7. The only thing you'll get in writing from the FAA is FAR 91.17 : "No person may act or attempt to act as a crewmember of a civil aircraft while using any drug that affects the persons faculties in any way contrary to safety." The same FAR uses the 8 hour bottle to throttle rule, where as the military uses a 12 and (as I understand it) commercial airlines a 10. Up to you to decide when you can safely fly. 8. In all honesty, the only thing that can fix that problem without new hardware is new software....linux. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  9. Your response was argueably insulting to the vast majority of riggers in the US who charge $45 or more for a repack; did you think this is perhaps why Sparky responded as he did? Personally, my local rigger charges $45. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  10. Gravity definitely is necessary for determining terminal velocity, even if it isn't necessary for determining the ratio between two objects. Like others have said, a body at terminal in freefall with be at the speed in which "lift" (the drag force) is equal to the weight of the body. Different bodies end up with different drag forces, which is why terminal velocity varies slightly between people (sometimes significantly). This is equally due to the mass difference as it is to the different body surface areas and slickness of suit. The link to another thread above covers two different ways of going about determining terminal velocity, but I still disagree with one of them. 11. I had a similar problem on a borrowed netpune for a night jump. I jumped out and looked down at the neptune and it hadn't turned on the backlight. I just pushed the button that I was told to if it didn't light up like it was supposed to and the light turned and stayed on. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  12. How long has it been since it has expired? Less than one year: Make one evaluation jump with a I or I/E who has been a Course Evaluator, assist in a FJC, and attend the seminar portion of the Coach's course. Between one and two years: Retraining from a Course Director, and then complete the above three items for less than one year. More than two years: your rating is completely invalid and you need to retake the course. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  13. Geek warning....aircraft designing with Kelly Johnson...although if I get that job from Scaled, then I'll be working with Burt Rutan, which is the next best thing. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  14. As opposed to the less famous Bill's list? I went through his list for each of the sabre and sabre2. Felt a little rushed with only 50 jumps at that 1.1, but given I was able to complete his list without feeling that I was in over my head is why I felt fine with getting the sam. Trying to go through everything on the sam now; I figure that one should be able to do the list while the canopy is your canopy of choice, instead of before you get a new one. Being able to flare turn your canopy before downsizing doesn't help you 100 jumps before hand when you couldn't and need to. The only thing I have yet to do is the flat turn on the sam...I have planned to do it a number of times, but the wind conditions I have been dealt did not feel comfortable trying it, so hopefully one of these days. None the less, I love the sam (much more than the equal sized stilleto I have tried a few times), so don't intend to get rid of it for a long while. 15. Since it looks like Freddie got his question answered, I figure it's not so bad to semi-hijack his thread. Do people think a samurai is a good learning canopy? I'm not personally all that interested in becoming a "swooper" persay, just interested in becoming an all-around canopy pilot. My progression was sabre at 1:1 for about 150 jumps then sabre2 around 1.1:1 for probably 50 jumps then my 1.22 samurai for the past 50 jumps and hopefully using it until 500+. Is this a good progression? I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  16. Plannin' a few demos in the near future? I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  17. I'm curious what the problem is? (from the FAA's viewpoint) I should have my DER in a couple months, which could certainly be of help if it is a certification issue. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  18. Jay did my coach's course and is a great guy. He blames the record for his being short; I guess he used to be taller. And you have to realize how coordinated this all was. The porters made it to 2000' in about a minute and there were people on the ground helping him in and out of his rigs. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  19. Congrats....now it's time to start learning!
  20. I don't know about that....I still have graduate level engineering courses that have us use spherical cows! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  21. Then you had a nearby pass by 28000 or 29000. The aircraft does not get the designation Air Force One unless the president is on board. Air Force Two with the VP. Didn't really get held up, but I looked out to spot once right as a four ship of C-130s passed over the DZ at probably 4000'. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  22. If something else happens to your gear, then can bad karma follow the gear and/or seller? I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  23. My samurai 150 is nociceably tighter than a stilleto 150 I have jumped. I would personally take this to mean that if a stilleto 107 was tight as mentioned above, then a samurai 105 will be even tighter, but I don't have personal experience with it. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  24. More appropriately, this and this indicate that you can as long as the cutter is field replaceable. What year is the cypres? I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  25. Am I looking at the wrong document, because the PIA one does not have any pack volume for the smart. In addition, the document lists four different pack volumes for the PD 143R, which have a variance of 6% between them, which is like comparing a 150 to a 140 almost! Seems like the document can be easily misused. Edited for bad wording of the last sentence. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
