  1. would prefer NOT to... ANY HUGE Large Urban area WILL have more than it's fair share of crazies.. the few visits i've made to NYC have been OK but I can live without being there.... be Sure... not to paint ALL of New York State. with the same brush as you would for THAT city... There, in the 21st century...."the melting pot " has turned into a cesspool of "what about ME "??? and " How about MY Culture " and " where can I GO, to get MINE"... idiocy... imo Tooo many people with Toooo many different agendas. Not enough harmony and getting along... NOT enough ELBOW Room... No wonder they live in buildings with 90 floors and they have to ride UNDER Ground >> The Rest of the state consists of lots of decent, sensible, hard working folks who Look out for each other ( Note The current crisis in Buffalo ) and who pay waaaaay tooo much in taxes.. !!!| Some have s aid that NYC should become a new State, Unto itself.... But they'd go bankrupt in 2 weeks from too many takers and not enough givers.....
  2. the thief has brought this upon himself / herself. As riggerrob mentions, run it past the right folks AT the DZ..... They may wind up being your accomplice... Make Damn sure that this persons' Back... is facing away from any "moving parts" and that a pilot chute launch will NOT cause ANY safety issue or likelihood of damage to a plane or person. Turn the person to the correct position,,, if necessary.. Then Pull Silver....... Then it's a SURE thing that he/she won't be jumping Your rig... on That skydive... sometimes you HAVE to take drastic measures.......
  3. Tough situation... sorry to read about this. Thievery sucks , but Thievery among skydivers is simply Unacceptable... A meager payment , or 2 or 3 , for gear worth thousands and then absconding with the rig is pure Bullshit....... forget about police, forget about about a "lawsuit ", forget about "outing the person Here". It's Time for some " Boarding Area Revenge " Find out where the person IS... ascertain IF he/she is Jumping that Rig.... Then enlist someone who can and WILL, approach the deadbeat about the time that the props are spinnin' Up, and the plane is loading... Have them PULL the reserve ripcord. And then Walk OFF with it. Declaring, " this component has just been re-possessed, for NON payment " Simple, safe, no likelihood of getting in a jam, over "a physical assault " AND the person gets OUTTED where it counts..... On the DZ where they may THINK they enjoy some kind of " shelter" from their poor behavior.....Better ( imo ) than posting the name on any internet site.. Good luck.. PS I hope that You have a rig to Jump,,, for yourself,,,, and are NOT without, for when YOU wanna make a couple... jmy
  4. Not offended at ALL Kingsixx...and Hope YOU are Not,,,either... the "douche-baggery" mentioned earlier. isn't aimed at you.. at all... (mostly to be found here,, in Speakers Corner ) A point i intended to make in an edit, as i returned here , just now. I enjoy visiting DZ dot com and reading about many subjects, sport related and otherwise,,,,Sometimes i will comment. All meant in a spirit of conversation and exchange of ideas...Certainly , your thread title, got my attention... I DO appreciate your sensitivity to the issue, ( whether it was intended or Not,,,) upon noting your Service to Our Country... Thank you for That. and Have a great Veterans Day week... jmy
  5. ....as well as On HERE !!! hahahahah Lighten Up Francis !! could be a simple typo ( look and see WHERE the number keys for 1 and for 2 are located ) any chance that the "negative replies " are coming from the same folks who post about " they are Flying AIRPlanes over MY House " ??? !! hahahaha NON jumping nit pickers, who BUY a place under the departure end of a busy runway.... the Only "hot water " and "damage to reputation " that i see HERE,,,, come from Your Original Post.... WHY ?? haven't they "fixed it "...??? Maybe it is simply because they are out SKYDIVING.... Not to mention that There has always been a certain "Ranch sense of Humor ".. P.S. The Father of the DZO(s) is a WW2 Veteran,,,,, and so any INTENTIONAL attempt at disrespect, is HIGHLY unlikely ( imho )
  6. yes... stupid generally does NOT get you tooo Far, in our chosen Hobby. The Trick... is to be able to recognize it...before you step into "quicksand" my list, going mostly from memory. 7. we C and you DO !! good monkey !!! in this sport, you Get what you Give.... good job at Giving... Now,,,enjoy the GETTING.... jmy
  8. W T H ???? it's good to have the clock in synch with a later sunset hour,,, in the summer.... We Don't NEED it to be Light at 4:30 AM in the summer,, IF we can push that clock ahead... Means a couple of extra loads at the end of the day during july august sept..... The REALITY of Darkness at 5 :15 PM nowadays IS harsh... But That's Science Baby...... that's science. jimmy
  9. I was GONNA post a reply, about the Viking costume but Then figured it was BEST.... to just " Leif " it alone we had the usual turnout, maybe 8 or 10 groups of kids, 3 to 6 children per group... and a few singletons....with their parents waiting out on the sidewalk, near the street.... It was chilly and drizzly but we leave the lights On and THEY Are Drawn to it.......Like moths...!!!Handed out small bags of Snyders pretzels and also had a large bowl of skittles , M&Ms and snickers.....If they were polite and excited, I'd say, "you can take 3 or 4 candies" If they were pushy or impatient, I'd say " You can help yourself to One or two "...
  10. Yes i agree with just about everything that was mentioned by Skydivesg, especially early in the post where he says. "someone the student doesn't even Know. "...It IS selfish and intrusive to "ask onto" a tandem, simply because you have manifested as a solo... and then at boarding decide you don't want to BE a solo....It might be acceptable ONLY if the TM and The cameraperson KNOW the singleton, AND trust in his/her abilities....Or if they Invite the solo... There Is however another side to the story... which is when the Student " Does know " the extra jumper ", " Does want to share the skydive " Does understand and accept the added contingencies... Just over a week ago I was able to Join my Son ( 28 years of age ) on his second Tandem jump. We made the request to jump together, of the DZO at the moment we asked about getting Jim on the manifest. I was known to the DZO, and also to the Cameraperson and came to meet the TM and address his concerns, well before we geared Up. The Key , as is Often the case,,, was effective communication, upon meeting and Before boarding , taking into account the cameramans preffered exit position, the TM preffered exit style and My willingness to " follow their requests " I do have the credentials required to make such a skydive...
  11. i had 1,735 skydives when i first "added a video camera"... is THAT more than 200????? It was 1995. 2 or 3 others at nearby DZs were already videoing tandems. We always worked as "teammates " and not adversaries and shared the workload. A few of us videoed Fun Jumps as well, and helped tremendously during de-briefs. Our footage was GOOD, and centered, and creative. it felt Good to be a camera person..... today,,, things are different. Hand Cam and Oh No Go Pro !!!! ..Not so much fun, when EVERYbody is doin' it...imho jimmytavino uspa #9452 A 3914 D12122
  12. OH.... Now i realize that you are asking about The reserve Pilot Chute... sorry... My answer however remains the same.... It's Muscle power..... from the act of Pulling the reserve handle.. IF the deployment begins via AAD..... then it's "computer power "... Of course immediately AFTER.... it Does become the Other choices listed here... jmy
  13. initially it would be "None of the above", since it is the FORCE exerted by the jumpers' hand and arm, as the P C Handle is taken and Yanked.....OUT of the pouch... THAT Muscle power is what Enables the Pilot chute to lay "NEXT TO " the jumper.... for that split second Before the Jumper Falls AWAY from the inflating PC... Think "air anchor " good question. No matter WHAT " force " it IS ,, when you NEED it... May it "Be With You " jmy A 3914 D 12122
  14. Best Cessna jump step ?????? The TailGate of a CASA 212 Aviocar !!!!
  15. lots of great replies here.. Thanks to each of you all. CSpencefly... I will NOt plan anything for mid march....i ALREADY have a destination in mind... We had the chance to Vist The Emerald Isle and then London... Truly great time. The PEOPLE in Ireland are Wonderful....!!! and Rick...Yes. Panama has always been of interest to Me. I have learned that the Atlantic side of the Canal is further WEST, on the globe, Than the pacific side.. Go Figure ! and one of my favorite palindromes is " A man a Plan a canal, Panama " TRY it it works backwards !! It's tough to plan for 10 or 12 or 15 days away... I get calls for work, ( service calls and sales calls ) pretty often... NOT sure How to handle being away for 2 weeks. I notice 4 and 5 day getaways listed in the paper, from "tour groups" Lots of variety for places to go... most of them One quarter to one third the cost of a longer trip.. We have booked a trip for Nancy and Myself and our Son...to Denver, with a well reputed local outfit.. for early Dec... Airfare from Roch on saturday, Game tickets to see The Bills play the Broncos, 3 nights lodging, and visits monday and tuesday to one or another Ski Mountain, and a Pro Hockey game tuesday.... return flight is wed... My son will learn of this,,, about the time he's going out the door to What he THINKS will be a day of work,,, on THAT Sat. Morning.. ( as a welcomed customer where he works, and a guy who is On good terms with both the Owner(s) AND the manager, I shall diplomatically "notify " them, that he deserves 3 days OFF.. and WILL they please NOT schedule him .. He's usually off, on Sundays and tues. so i'll request time off, on his behalf, for sat, monday and wed. ) Don't Tell HIM... it'll be a surprise.. Still gonna plan Something for the late summer months of 2015.... thanks again folks...
  16. Damn !!! I WISH I lived 20 miles from The Ranch...... You're Lucky... A Fine Place....Great facilities, Excellent Staff All around.... nice people, nice landing area, Niiice airplanes. I happily drive 320 miles to visit there.... .....would drive 500 hahahahaha As a Son of the Hudson Valley... (Town of Brewster ) I try to get "downstate " ( where You actually live ) as often as possible, from Upstate ( Rochester ) where I Actually live
  17. HahaHAH!! Andy9o8. you made me Laugh Out Loud !!!! but I DID ask for honest, straightforward replies !!! Yours is taken under advisement. and Duly Noted. Thanks also to every one else. NewGuy2005..... we're thinking towards next june- sept. sorry not to have mentioned that. I like the idea of "off-season " just about anywhere... Smaller crowds are better than Large Crowds...... especially if they are made up of Tourists... The idea of Just going somewhere and creating an open ended adventure is appealing... less luggage to "lug" around is appealing... and upgraded cruises, on Half full cruise ships, is appealing. How about all inclusive type places...?? resorts, where one simply arrives and then enjoys all the local amenities for 7 or 8 days ...?? good deals?? bad deals??.. often there are simply TOO many choices... thanks for the replies jmy
  18. We are a bit overdue for a nice get-away. we can often enjoy "long weekends " and Do so...from time to time, But would now like to take an extended trip somewhere...
  19. Yes to radials and running LOW over the field, gear UP and THROTTLED... AND preferably ATTACHED to a DC-3... which would then Hit The Flight Line !!! you don't have to fly it to 13 Five...price it and charge, according to " 30 minutes of Climb " ....then she turns to jump run, as long as it's above 10 grand.... and everybody gets OUT!!! Toss a few tandems on every load... with special 50 or 100 Dollar Upcharge for The Nostalgia...having those extra funds applied to defraying some of the Ferry Fees... IF i'm a tandem customer and/or a "bucket lister " expecting to make just One jump.... I think I WOULD pay a premium to MAKE that skydive Outta a venerable DC 3.... jus' sayin'
  20. Some of us,,,,, were assholes... WAAAAY before the Muff Brothers made it fashionable ....!! WHAT ????
  21. make an effort to get MANY friends together..... as Balloon pilots generally like to have Multiple loads manifested... First load goes, and then follow up loads "get on the road" and chase the "aircraft ". After load one has exited, and the Balloon descends, Load 2 Meets it,,,,, and it relaunches , as it continues to move downwind, across the terrain. Carry cell phones, arrange for "pick Up vehicles" and friends to retrieve you....consider having pull-up cords with you, so that you can repack, while waiting to be "retrieved" ( easier than lugging your Unpacked gear ) Pay attention to drift and plan the exits soas to allow for sensible landing areas... Watch out for "wires alongside roads " , fences in fields, and YES real LIVE Livestock... which WILL be spooked.... If ya' swoop 'em !! and if you don't SEE them..... it could get even More interesting!!! IF you DO see them..... be sure to watch your step..... as you walk Out of THEIR field have fun.
  22. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H85APaXrJ_Q&feature=player_detailpage if this is what you're talking about.. then i agree... ps Never too early...
  23. it might help to look at your arch as a comfortable, legs back, hips down, and chin UP, event...That can be accomplished if you do your best to SEE the plane as you go..
  24. I do NOT see "PARACHUTE" on the list... My most favorite TOY has always been my parachute
