    pilot handle?

There are different designs for different sizes. Some companies have a soft "handle" on the apex so there is something to grab onto when you reach back and some have the pvc attached. Some have nothing. I would take pictures but I am already in my pajamas.
  2. There is already a list of the jumpers that have died in this activity. Nick does a great job doing it. The awareness of the known fatalities, I think, more than covers the unknowns. I am sure Nick has a lot of bases covered throughout the world. The opportunity for notification is there. If an Unknown BASE Jumper memorial were established I think it should be an original idea and not attempt to trace lineage to something already established just because it is an honorable and obvious sure thing. It would lessen the meaning and alienate the survivors of both memorials. I vote no! We can all chip in for our own object if we get tired of flicking others’. We already have a Tomb of the Unknowns and it doesn't need anything drawing severity and reflection from it through name recognition.
  3. After a strike there isn't much you can do. I tried taking a large portion of the impact with my legs as evident by the huge disfiguring scar real close to where it broke. Dude real glad to hear you are still kickin'. Good luck on your recovery.
  4. You can't turn around without bumping into a Skymonkey at any of the Fayetteville area dropzones. Plus a lot of us/them frequent the happenin' joint known as Aviators. Look at the list of dropzones in the Fayetteville area and give them a try. If you will be in the town for a few days try
  5. Jason, I think the list has it's place right where it is. Every single activity in the world has a list: Member Lists, Success Lists, and Fatality Lists. All of these lists are useful for reflection and research. Keeping a fatality list, in my opinion, at the very least will open some eyes for those that are interested in that side of the story. If not then it is a very one sided story and those that don't care can have a great BASE jumping career. If the NPS and other organizations are only looking at the list for guidance for the sport then there opinion is one sided and nullified at that. The lists possess an awareness that can only be provided by it’s presence publicly. I am glad there are these lists around. I reflect on many lists and just because it brings extreme awareness doesn't mean it's a malign thing, in my opinion. Safe jumps man…..Matt

    radios

Unless the rescue service has the same preset radio you will need an Icom or another radio that you can tune for the frequency, power, and modulation(am or fm). If you are talking about a certain southern European valley, I remember the rescue guys wanting a cell number or one of your radios.
  7. This has been talked about a few times so more answers could be had through a search. On the thread topic, everytime I fly I take all of my gear with me. I usually check it but I did carry my BASE rig once with no problems. Like I said a thousand times, if they want to take anything off of it like a H/K or whatever that you ask to mail it or break it right in front of them. I truly hate airport security and there "calibrated" senses of dangerous materials. They are below the mall cops in my security hierarchy. edit: I have flown through france a few times and there hasn't been any issues with it. They almost knew what color my bag was by their "thorough" search.
  8. Natural selection man. I wish the "mentor" would be at as much risk as the "student".

    Well . . .

Same here Nick. I only met you once two years ago but that was a shock. Don't go away.
  10. Now BASE 813, you know what happened last time a new BASE jumper was criticized. You and I were in the dog house. You remember? Yeah you remember.
  11. I got insurance through the local rescue service once. They said it was good for a year but I couldn't stand the wait and used it right away.
  12. For static line jumps I have found that using a cornish hen and a whole tube of shoe goo works great. As an added bonus at the end of the jump the bird is already plucked on one side. They sell tiny bottle of Tabasco and BBQ sauce to keep in your saddle/stash bags.

    oops (2-18-05)

Ray, I think you are all over the don't get caught point of view. I am not sure of all the endangered/protected species issue there but if you're not getting caught then it will never be known.
  14. I totally agree that assistance is needed in some instances. The risk calculation in the situation you state is the instructor. Also in that case the skydive isn't the problem the skydiver is. It doesn't mean that the sport is not safe. Cars have brakes, Chutes have reserve handles, and people have brains. If we don't use any of them then the situation changes due to the person not the activity. I think we need to define safe or this will turn into a Clinton deposition. Skydiving isn't for everyone and that is why the sport has implemented the training and safety that is has.
  15. Wow, I guess I am jsut as amazed as those college kids. Maybe we are all ignorant to the way they feel about us and need to get in touch. Oh wait, no we don't. I didn't know that BASE jumping made me gay though. I do see my buddies in a different light now but never made the connection. Also I am neither Jewish nor Canadian. Is this one of those new requirements made by the commies in the higher ups? Also I am glad I can now defy physics and am also a jerkface moron. I already knew the last two but for the most part this is a very informative article that really openned my eyes. I guess we will just have to go on with our lives making our structure jumps.
  16. Since doing anything that requires actions to keep you alive is dangerous, skydiving doesn't fall into the not safe realm to me. In my opinion skydiving is a dangerous but a calculated risk. To determine the safety level of the sport you need to evaluate the risks and the actions taken to mitigate the risk. Less performance/malfunction knowledge/training=more dangerous. Once these actions are performed to the current standard or above the activity can then be deemed "safe" even though it is still really dangerous. I think everyone knows the risks of skydiving through the first jump course. If the current standard was jumping one rig all the time or a separate reserve then you can say that skydiving is complicated and dangerous but as long as the training and technology increases along side of the activity you can most likely deem it safe. The pioneers of parachuting did some really funky stuff at first testing new rigs and gear. Skydiving has been an ever changing sport and has become safer. BASE jumping started the same way by the pioneers and safety has improved along with it. To me as long as safety training and R&D continue to increase on pace with the sport then it will remain "safe" jsut really dangerous when all the safety measures have been employed and you still have a big wad of fabric over your head. A lot has to do with your own knowledge and trust in your instructors. Don’t take a tool for his word. All of this of course hinges on the pioneers claiming it is safe to begin with. I don’t think anyone has made that claim about BASE jumping yet. I think I heard about skydiving being safe at safety day one time as I remember
  17. Good Leroydb. I am looking forward to it. Chill the fuck out.
  18. I don't know. Let me see it Leroydb. You can call me Matt.
  19. Thanks Jason. If they need anything please post it here. Our community needs to be self contained and that is what Jon was helping us with.
  20. Nick we all know the honor and success of the SEALs. Don't get caught up in this man. This is not a thread about SEALs. I have demonstrated in another post on this thread that SEALs are on here and have posted properly. This is a troll call for SEALs disguised with the properties of a god discussion that the god believers have taken hook, line, and sinker.
  21. Chuckie I am really trying. I sure as hell wouldn't want any paper cuts or lost pay inquiries to ever happen here.
  22. I don't understand either. I think the thread creator knows though lets ask him about his experience level on this. Maybe he can clear this up because I am REALLY curious.
  23. Hey man, I thought I was the P@#$Y. Are you thinking higher of me now? How you doin' man? I always evaluate the situation and I'm not even a SEAL! I think that is a "being alive" kind of thing. Like look right grab right and so on and so on.
