  1. http://livefreelivenatural.com/celebrated-physician-fukushima-humanity-brink-possible-worldwide-nuclear-holocaust/ "I am not an alarmist" Guys. The guy is a DOCTOR. Of course whatever he says is going to be correct. And another scientifically accurate, documented, and well written article. http://www.dw.de/scientists-downplay-fukushima-radiation-hazards/a-17182633
  2. This is just adorable. Opinion article by extremely biased author. (article has no citations, and her figures are from other non science articles written by herself of her fellow advocates) http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/31/opinion/radiation-fears-are-real.html?_r=0 -SPACE-
  3. If you guys don't stay on topic I swear to god I'll turn this thread around.
  4. 100% agree. Even if that gun is 3/4 scale it still looks real. Also, the main reason I posted the article was to highlight the very gross word choices. The gun is OBVIOUSLY a 'replica'. The photo shows nothing that would at first glance clearly distinguish it from a live firearm. That is not a "toy."
  5. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/24/us/boy-13-carrying-toy-guns-is-shot-dead-by-deputies.html?_r=0 I'm not a huge fan of cops, or guns really, but I'm pretty sure I would think that is a real gun if I saw someone with it.

  7. The last article I posted here was an "opinion piece" but it was written by a guy who makes a living assessing risk of all types. He teaches for Harvard and writes about cool stuff. "Radiation" is extremely complicated to predict how much will actually get into your system. But, generally, it travels and stays with heavy metals and dust. It likes to concentrate in biological systems as with eddies in current, etc. Yes, the further -radiation- travels the less energy it has. But you may be mixing up a few things. "Emitted radiation" follows the inverse square law meaning the intensity of the radiation decreases to the square of the distance. What the "polluted" radiation worries are is from close-contact with radioactive substances. The inverse square law would still apply here, but the worry is more that people ingest or touch/live in proximity to the radioactive source. You could hold a vile of the crappy water around the defunct power plant and have no adverse effects, but if you swim in or DRINK that water is could be bad after a while depending on how much you are exposed to. Radiation exposure is just that, exposure. It is a product of type of radiation, intensity, AND duration of exposure. If you drink glowing* water your exposure to that radiation is for as long as it is in your system. (This is why certain foods are good to eat while there is a chance of radiation exposure, those foods bind to or absorb the particles that are radioactive and your body then spits those out). Also why there are short shifts in certain rescue operations that involve dangerous radiation. *not all radiation visibly 'glows' and not all glowing water is bad. ;-P -SPACE-
  8. An opinion piece by Ropeik. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/22/opinion/fear-vs-radiation-the-mismatch.html -SPACE-

    Cool airdrop

Bad ass complex deployment on those tanks. drag to pilot to a dozen or so reefed mains and then an impact dampener for landing.
  10. It should be a good clue that MOST of the caesium being found around the western US has been there since before even you old-schoolers were born.
  11. Your mom has elevated radiation levels. Better keep your tin foil hat on then. Read*. Absorb. Understand. Think. React if necessary. http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/08/29/2548951/fukushima-radiation-fish/[url] *Read from accurate, credible science-based sources. Not opinion blogs. (Edit to add the *)
  12. Good to see someone else that understands radiation and the exaggerated fear that follows it. Acute radiation exposure sucks, yes, but it's not what most people think. I have posted this chart before here, but it should be posted again. http://xkcd.com/radiation/
  13. I empty my balls around 400' on just about every flight. Totally took that thread title a different way. -SPACE-
  14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2xmAWS4akE Before a bunch of you gullible should-be whuffos post this on your stalkerbook page, be warned it is (obviously) fake. That said, it is only a matter of time before this happens for real. The performance is there. The pilots are there.
  15. Damn. The TFR just *barely* misses KLMO: http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_3_4333.html Yup they changed it. I took my quicksilver up (From KLMO) this morning to survey the high tide and hunt some Care Bears. Pretty devastating to see home from the sky. Then went to work in the BASE Dynamics Loft at BDU. Cop guarding the front gate of the airport, I had to explain my reason for being there with a kayak on top of my car and a BASE jumping shirt on. HOLY CRAP Boulder airport is insane. CH-47s, UH-60s, News whirlybirds doing laps, bringing back hippies, elderly and a impressive and disproportionate large number of cats and dogs. I wandered around like I was important. FEMA is in the DZ packing room and office. Fed crews galore, tents everywhere. EVERY taxiway was packed with delivery rations, water, etc. I got Free lunch with the pilots, tons of Eldorado Water, and a coast guard air show from the front row. Pretty awesome.
  16. I have a house in Longmont, and the flood within 100m of me is iss pretty bad, but a boat load of fun. We got evacuated on thursday night, but nobody left. Left Hand Creek, normally around 10-30CFS went up to about 6000CFS. Ate about 10-30m north of the old creek bed, took out a community outdoor swimming pool, a few bridges, etc. I turned my house into a refugee camp, one guest from Lyons currently, a few more arrive after they get airlifted out today. Quote of the day, Via Matt Ward (from Lyons [Island 4] town meeting yesterday): Lyons resident: Can we flush the toilets? National Guard: Yes. Lyons resident: But... Where does it go? National Guard: Longmont. I have been kayaking around the city, staying away from fast-moving parts. It's nasty. But a lot of fun. "I wonder how bad this would have to get for me to want it to stop" Yesterday I drove around Boulder with helping gear. Spent some time helping people tear carpet out of flooded basements before it molds and becomes a biohazard. But Boulder is mostly contained. Lyons is genuinely fucked though. Game over for that town. Hundreds missing.
  17. Yeah that was me. May 19th 2009. i still have the grass stains.
  18. It is pretty awesome that they found them and they will go into a museum... But i'm a bit on edge because I don't know if you are making a sarcastic comment or not. Please elaborate.
  19. Opt for spaying and neutering.. problem with unwanted offspring solved. Only a vas.
  20. I camped at the gate last april (15 months ago, Georgetown side), first time I had been on that road since, well, 2002. Looks nice. I grew up on the Grant side and always drove from there, but the North side is a much smoother drive. We also did Squaretop Mtn, WSW of the Bierdstadt parking lot. It's not a 14r but nobody ever is up there. Seems more 'out there' than the east side of the pass. #recommended.
