  1. no... the use of deadly force wasn't called for from every account I have seen. The witness I saw this morning said he didn't even know who started the pushing and shoving or who threw the popcorn. -- Rob
  2. apparently the ex-cop (shooter) left the theater to complain to management, and upon his return the texter confronted the old guy about it. words were exchanged (loudly), there was some pushing and shoving, and popcorn went in the air. Then the old guy shot the texter. (this from an eyewitness account I saw on TV this morning) -- Rob
  3. In my experience, people who can't be bothered to write properly are also unlikely to have taken the time or trouble to research the content of their posts, to have read other people's posts with any comprehension, or to have thought seriously about the subject on which they comment. see? Neither of our responses here were meaningful to the topic. Wasn't that fun? -- Rob
  4. How about working in a school for spelling, grammar and punctuation? In my experience, grammar nazis usually ignore the content and focus on the syntax because they don't have a meaningful response to the message. -- Rob
  5. 2 years ago in china I had to carry lots of cash because many places didn't have mag stripe readers. A hotel that did have one required I leave cash with the front desk for 2 days in order to run the card through their mag stripe reader and their clearing house could verify it wasn't a stolen card. I'm waiting for the chips in the cards. -- Rob
  6. Many years ago execution was cheaper than a life sentence. But it's reversed. Between the extensive appeals before and legal ass covering that happens during the execution, It's more expensive to execute someone than to house them for the rest of their natural life (assuming average age of an incarcerated convict, average age of those receiving the death penalty, fewer appeals, and other sundry crap). I did the numbers once in the late 80's (89-ish I think) and once again in the early 2000's (03?). -- Rob
  7. regarding a half-assed apology... doesn't seem it's an apology as much as an explanation of his opinion. -- Rob
  8. None of the proposed laws would have prevented this... 1. Which would have been completely uninformed at the moment I wrote what you just quoted. 2. It is only now with 20/20 hindsight given to you after several days you can even attempt to make this subjective statement. there. you've covered your ass from drawing conclusions in absence of facts (human nature). can we move on and talk about all the things people want to do because "think of the children" and how ineffective they may or may not be? After a few weeks of this Zimmerman will be back in the news or something just as unproductive will come up. -- Rob
  9. It's a shithole of an airport anyway. -- Rob
  10. Absolutely true. A reduction in spending is a vital part of solving our budget problem. Yet, you support someone who is "lashing out" against those would like to reduce spending. Based on what you posted, I can only make assumptions about why you might do that. Untill some one comes along and proposes a straight 50% to 60% cut in Defense (Attack?) spending, I will consider anything else just political gamesmanship. (Obviously along with many other cuts) the last time I ran the numbers it was 56% across the board (excepting self funding items like SS -- if it's self funding, leave it alone) -- Rob

  12. so you back a pro-spending agenda? Do you think we have a spending problem, or a revenue problem? -- Rob
  13. [Devils advocate] Confirmation bias? What if you come into contact with a lot of perfectly normal homeschooled people but the subject never comes up because they're normal?[/DA] On balance, I'm comfortable with my post. See added emphases. this. "vast majority" being the key phrase. I've run into a few who weren't a little strange. I've even run into a couple who were downright normal (more so than their parents who were homeschooling them). but yes... vast majority... weird. yes. -- Rob
  14. sounds like a fun trip. I half expected this to be a rant about the "Merry Christmas" vs "Happy Holidays" argument that happens often this time of year. (and it is SC after all, so here goes...) I was discussing this with a liquor store clerk the other night (she's in a masters program for some sort of studies of religion). When we came upon the same sentiment. Why would anyone be upset at someone for wishing them well during this season of many holidays?? ... idiots ... Enjoy your trip and time off. -- Rob
  15. Moderates are. What the hell do they know? Little weenies. size queen -- Rob
  16. http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/25-most-dangerous-neighborhoods/ and http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/top100dangerous/ world wide? well... google is your friend. But New Orleans and Detroit still make those lists. thank for the data, not being sarcastic. however, my comment was more about the relevance of the article. i dont find it very relevant to my concerns. or IMO most peoples concerns. if my purpose was to deflect attention from urban areas, then its a great article. which i suppose is the purpose of the post and the article. I posted the list of the cities with highest murder rate fairly recently. Here it is again. www.policymic.com/articles/22686/america-s-10-deadliest-cities-2012 And here are the top 100 for all violent crime: www.neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/top100dangerous/ you must be in a hurry this evening... that's a couple of posts this evening in this thread where you've repeated information in the section you quoted (but apparently didn't read) try decaf -- Rob
  17. DC isn't a state so not really comparable. DC is 100% urban. There is no state remotely like that. Apples to tangerines. really... I should have noted that in my post. And perhaps added a caveat that it is just an interesting number because DC isn't a state. Thanks for the correction prof. -- Rob

  19. fair point. with the correlating question: how much of the crime in the 2010 UCR was against residents vs transients (employees and tourists) -- Rob
  20. While it is not a state, it's interesting to note that DC beats out the number 1 on that list by more than a factor of two at 1,330.2 violent crimes per 100K population. -- Rob
  21. Having dealt with parents on some issues (as a scout leader) I agree... parents can certainly be horrible. But I wonder how the behavior in the car pickup line varies. My children's elementary school car pickup line exhibits none of the above referenced behavior. I volunteer at school regularly, and assist often with dismissal (specifically I'm out front working the car pickup line). Yes, the line is quite long. But I've seen no impolite behavior in the line from parents. It makes me wonder what factors lead to a more understanding parent population. -- Rob
  22. yup... there is usually more to the story. True. Can't jump to judgement based on a one-sided article and some assumptions. When I see people jump to conclusions based on a one-sided article and some assumptions they've added on their own I think of the old Benny Hill saying about assuming. At least you seem to acknowledge there is a problem. But it's dubious as it's couched in another assumption. -- Rob
  23. I'm sure you were thinking that they should have upgraded and they wouldn't have been spotted. I have to wonder if an evening overfly with a drop in the yard to be picked up the next day might have been a better plan. I don't know much about the remote drone tech... is there tech for longer flights from electrics available now or is gas the only thing for decently long flights? -- Rob
  24. consider those ironic exclamation points. We would only consider them vaguely warranted if he had more than, say 10,000 rounds. Maybe 50,000 for the weekly shooters here. yeah, more than 10K is plenty. maybe "too much" by some people's standards, but going out and shooting 1000 (or 2000) in a day for training isn't abnormal for someone trying to improve skills. I probably have "too much" by someone's standards. But it's just about right for me. -- Rob
