  7. I started skydiving on my 28th birthday.....because I wanted to impress this guy that I had a HUGE crush on.....we went out there together, but he chickened out.....turned out to be gay too.....I made my first static line jump that day. It was kuhl....That was in '94.....so I married the guy who owns the plane.....got a nifty kiddo out of the deal 3 years later. Anyway......I LOVE the advancements in the sport....in terms of flying and equipment. But there are better people than me to give particulars here. I'm still a belly flyer, and though I LOVE my FX, I'm really not educated enough about the finer points of equipment advances to give any intelligent feedback here..... I think we are just on the front-end of advancements, though.....just testing the waters. But I don't know where it's gonna go.....I believe, though, that if we can imagine it, it will eventually be done.... some days it's just not worth gnawing through the straps http://home.earthlink.net/~linzwalley

  10. Ooooh....if they go that route, the really need to turn it into some high drama......like Lizzie catches him as he explores his sexuality with another man....(are he and elizabeth still together?).....she, with dark sunglasses and a marlboro hanging on her lip, slips into the equipment room........ some days it's just not worth gnawing through the straps http://home.earthlink.net/~linzwalley

  17. Bill is definately right about our sexual urges, if unchecked by our higher brain functions, would leave men to rape.....but of course would also lead women to consent.....It's the internal brain structures.....the "old" brain that controls these functions. The human cortex has evolved pathways that inhibit those primal drives. That definately IS what keeps our aggressive sexual urges in check. As far as pedofilia being a mental illness/crime. It is both. The fact that it's a mental illness is based on an adult's sexual attraction to a child....whether it is acted upon or not....if it "causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning." In those terms, it's based on the effect it has on the pedofile. The fact that it's a mental illness, however, makes it no less a crime. some days it's just not worth gnawing through the straps http://home.earthlink.net/~linzwalley

  19. I tried to PM you, but I really don't think it went through.... I'm terribly sorry if I frustrate you, but I tend to not get too uptight about most things....it's just how I am. However, personal attacks are not nice, and it did kind of hurt my feelers.....I'm doing quite well in medical school, and I assure you there is no big IF involved in my finishing..... My grandpa humor is very tongue-in-cheek.... and I assure you he is no danger, as many, many people look after him. The fire department's only had to come once....a few years ago....I'm just being kind of silly..... some days it's just not worth gnawing through the straps http://home.earthlink.net/~linzwalley
  20. I know what ya' mean, Billvon....in my social work world, I have testified many times in court against people who committed sexual crimes against children. Pedophilia is definately considered a mental illness....302.2 in the DSM-IV. However, the fact that there is no effective treatment tends to help in locking these folks up. For instance....people who "accidentallly" run over someone while drunk can often get sentenced to treatment, because effective treatment does exist....and they often reoffend. Sexual predators also tend to reoffend, but when caught, they're a lot more likely to get a prison term. some days it's just not worth gnawing through the straps http://home.earthlink.net/~linzwalley

  24. That's a pretty spooky thought. Another thought I have about it is this: I see SO many people who don't know how to pack a main canopy because the packer will do it.....I think that's incredibly dangerous, for people to know so little about their own gear. People should HAVE to hook up those new main canopies and learn how it's all put together....I think safety is increased more by improving jumpers' awareness and understanding of their gear than by regulation..... some days it's just not worth gnawing through the straps http://home.earthlink.net/~linzwalley
  25. I personally don't think that there is any correct answer to this. I think it's something that, hopefully, every parent who skydives thinks about and makes an informed decision about. For me, though I know there is selfish motivation, skydiving is too great a part of my life to give up....and I do want my child to grow up feeling that he can go out and grab whatever he wants from life....he learns that by seeing how his dad and I live our lives....As long as we survive skydiving, then all's well and good. That argument may not hold water with some 5 y/o kid whose mother died because she had to jump out of that plane.... Skydiving is not something that you pretty much have to do in order to make it in society....it's an extra, added risk (and a pretty huge one) that we take on simply because we want to.... some days it's just not worth gnawing through the straps http://home.earthlink.net/~linzwalley
