I happen to think this was a bad idea.... In this country unlike France, you are innocent until proven guilty. I would say in the US the term Tidal wave is still the most common term. In the Pacific rim they are called Tsunami. We call Hurricanes hurricanes, but in the Pacific they call them Typhoons... In England maybe something different. A puma is a mountain lion is a cougar... Different names for the same thing. PS- yes, the under water structure could cause a giant wave... All I was saying is that typically those Giant waves form when there is a DEEP bay or harbor. Interesting that they used to call these things tidal waves when I was a kid, I never heard the word Tsunami back then. We've seen video of the attenuated peak amplitude wave in other places (that was preceeded by a smaller waves and immediately before by a receeding tide) and we've seen the devastation, missing bridges, destroyed buildings scoured land and missing solid congrete harbor walls, missing landmass and the thorougly scoured remains in places. A big frikin wave like you imagine from your nightmares seems to be about right for some places, maybe with some persistence. As waves hit shallower water they tend to form steeper fronts, it's just how fluid dynamics works, so if the seabed was sloping that's what you'd tend to get. Mind you even if it wound up looking deceptively like a rapid tide, as the water broached the land you would get incredibly rapid currents as water rushed onto land with the wave. What starts out as a nice large shallow wave out in the ocean can turn into a wall of water preceeded by a receeding tide depending on the shape of the seabed. Just watch the surf at Mavericks on a big day for a picture. What someone sees even for the same event at roughly the same distance and approximate location from the quake could depend a lot on the seabed at their location. Again...yes that can happen, but in most areas and most times that is not the case. Bill you are right.... Many people tend to think it is the beginning of Hawaii 5-0 with this huge wave... Not usually the case, however, that can happen. Cases with a huge wave a typical only when the geography allows. Let's pretend there was a very large deep bay or inlet exposed to the area of the wave. As the sea-level rise entered the "V" shaped bay the water would be pinched off into a smaller and smaller area. Since the Bay is deep, the break of the wave would not occur until the shore line when the bottom of the roll contacted the bottom of the sea floor. This is quite rare, however, it does happen. In most cases "Tidal Wave" as they are called more resemble a very fast moving HUGE tidal surge many feet above normal. The other word Tsunami means "Harbor wave" which is self explanitory.... For the record I sent a PM to a MOD. I asked him not to ban John. The reply was basicly that they have a list of folks that have been pushing the edge so long that they are close to being kicked out of SC forever. John was on that list, and they are sick of the hidden attacks. They are holding peoples history's against them. Funny thing is they as of yet do not have a way to track a ban after it has expired, so they are going on feeling, not fact. A way to track the reason for a ban, and who banned them would be a great step in checking to see if a MOD is showing a bias. I have been told this has been discussed. yes and No..... The TMU/ TMC's of the ATC have plenty of time if using and Nexrad, however, most of their weath radar input is from ASR9 which is a fan beam radar. One would need a pencil beam TDWR to detect it. It is possible, but not probable. In some cases Radar can detect lasers.... Everyday I pick up the sunrise and sunset on the 6 Doppler radars I have here at work. There is also Lidar which would be characterized as a radar. One must realize that we are talking about the the same spectrum.... all light and radio and microwaves are part of the same array of information, just in different frequencies. Lasers are focused, but they may give off microwave radiation in an non-unidirctional fashion. I am not up to speed on laser radiation, but I do know there is ambient radiation from a laser. That is an easy prediction to make but not for the alll the reasons you stated. That fact is, there are more Homeowners now than ever. So, statistically there will probably be more foreclosures than ever in the not too distant future. The one perk is that for the first 5 years or so of renting the house I may be buying, I will be able to rent the upstairs. It is a Mother-daughter which I would separate, and in this market could easily get 1400-1600/mo in rent for the upstairs. That would help with the morgage in the beginning, unfortunately it will negate the tax savings I would have received on the interest. Yeah, I was weary of buying a house last year because I wasn't sure if I would be staying in the area, but I do plan to stay around for 10+ years I hope.... BTW - no ARM for me. I rates stay low, I am locking that thing in even if it cost more initially. Unfortunately the house I live in now and I am renting is the one I may be buying. It maybe that for the most part the country has always been split on many issues, but now more people are involved in politics and more people vote. In the past many people maybe didn't feel the issues were important enough to affect them, so they didn't vote. There are stats on groups of people who always vote, and groups who tend not to vote. I am posting this poll because I am curious what the housing situation of skydivers is. I am looking to buy in the next year or so, and here on Long island am amazed to see how much the prices have gone up over the past 4 years since I have been here. When I first moved here, the average price for a 3 bdrm 1 bath single story house on a 75'x100' lot was about $220,000 USD. Now that same house goes for about $350,000 USD. That is about a 60% increase in 4 years. Anyway I was just curious as to the results. It will not effect AQ at all. The majority of those fighting the Us don't read the papers, and those that do will not share that information, or will distort it. The US will help, like it always has.
