  1. There have been a couple of times I had to remove my goggles in freefall so I could see. (Probably shouldn't have been jumping with a cold and sinuses draining.)
  2. Is Minder Binders still there? I spent a lot of time there from '71 to '73. Also a couple of little bars between there and ASU. ...the Library and Freddies. (I'm pretty sure they are gone by now.) I also remember a couple of places in Tempe called the Cave and Casa Loma, I think.
  3. OK ...now I'm just confused. Do we ban guns, physicists, or cat ownership?!? We gotta do something! (this post was intended only as a humorous diversion. No inferred sub-reference to any real person intended ) http://www.santafenewmexican.com/Local%20News/Police-seize-guns-after-Los-Alamos-standoff
  4. There are 56 of them. Nope . . . 6 engines X 28 cylinders/engine X 2plugs/cylinder = 336 plugs Of course, that's not counting the ignitors in the 4 jet engines.
  5. I've seen that movie and liked it. The last B-36 built was moved a few years ago from Fort Worth, TX to Pima, AZ, where it's been restored and is now on display. When I was 5-6 years old that A/C was still on open display in TX and I remember being in the bombadier's station in it. Jimmy was the real deal He insisted on reaching combat in WWII and flew over 30 combat bombing missions in Europe, more than what was required. I wonder how much a set of plugs costs for a B-36? (Trivia question: how many spark plugs would you need to replace all of them?)
  6. SAC was a great flick. Also like John Wayne's Jet Pilot and Wings of Eagles along with several other flying movies. I am a big fan of post WW2 war films. Can't leave out my fav: Dr. Strangelove
  7. Not much different than organizing a typical scrambles meet at the holiday boogie. ...just sayin'

    Phoenix???

I lived there (Tempe) in the early 70's. Loved it out there. I'm sure it is the same as when I left. ...isn't it?
  9. Come on man.. this one is a fake.... EVERYONE knows the Blob is really the red menace Uh-oh! It appears to be green in the telescope. That means ...it's coming towards us .... really, really fast!!
  10. ...Take it easy with the football celebrations. You rocked a seismometer 100 miles away when Lynch did his razzle-dazzle run.
  11. My FB friends are overwhelmingly skydivers and family. Only a very few who are not either. Of the friends who are not jumpers, none have any interest in skydiving other than my brother (who made a jump before I did. I think he's got one S/L and a couple of tandem jumps).
  12. Who was it again that GUTTED the funding for mental institutions accross the USA again. When I was a kid drunks who lived on the streets were known as BUMS and lived on Skid Row. Then thousands upon thousands of menatlly ill people were turned out of institutions. They are the homeless that an exceedingly high number of are mentally ill. About 25% of the prison population should be in mental institutions.. not prison. But then our compassionate conservatives who are far from anything of the sort, want to further cut "social programs" that would have helped those people like Cho or Loughner, there is no program. Ya caint have it both ways councilor. If you want to kepp guns out of the hands of those who are mentally defective... as the law requires... perhaps supporting some of those social programs that would identify.. and heaven forbid TREAT the mentally defective, and let us know who the fuck is out there to NOT sell guns to. The signs were there in the case of Loughner being a nutter. If the college could have reported his eratic behavior to SOME social program to get him some help... maybe 6 people would still be alive. I would say many THOUSANDS of others would It seems that Cho was diagnosed early and treated during his school years. He apparently got the guns as a result of a failure by Virginia to report his illness to the Fed Govt. so no record of his problem was revealed when he purchased the guns. Laws were changed to prevent this from happening. All according to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Tech_massacre Nothing for Loughner yet.
  13. First, this guy and his followers are probably crazy. Second, anyone who thinks his rantings are about religion are deluded. He is about self-agrandizing self-promotion, even if some of his sheep are equally deluded. Unfortunately, he probably already has a gun.
  14. And that works fine for sane people. It's the insane we're talking about in this thread. The people without personal responsibility. People's denial or failure to recognize that is also part of the issue. So do the sane thing at make it harder for the sane to get guns right? You and kallend the this "people dont see" bs is just that, BS. You got a solution? Offer it up Lets see if you got more guts than kallend does today (as he did once) As far as the gun issue is concerned there are really only 3 answers. (1)Ban and confiscation, repeal of the 2nd. Anything short of that will leave a "loophole" for a gun to get loose. Never happen. (2)Hold committers of gun crimes responsible. Never happen. (3)Hold the law-abiding gun owners, politicians, and manufacturers and the advocacy groups responsible for the actions of the criminals. Bingo!....this is the real agenda since #1 is impossible and #2 is never cut and dried. The only way to calm the masses is to "target" wrong-thinking people. Good for a few extra bucks and a new layer of bureaucracy, too. There are no other options ...unless mandatory annual nutter exams are performed on everyone, maybe starting with preschool. Re-education camps could be recommended for borderline cases. ....Nah, never happen. (These exams would neccessarily be very hard to pass since no examiner would want to be responsible for letting a future loonytune be eligible for gun ownership.)
  15. STRAWMAN. No one has suggested any such thing. Post # which support my guesses with your response taken in context with the post you are responding to. Unfortunately, that's all we have to go on ...making inferences as to your thoughts on a solution to a problem when it would be very simple for you to just state the direction you would like to see taken. No specific solution ...just an ideological direction. (1) 79 81 104 129 135 143 150 202 (2) 71 79 108 158 (3) 29 71 79 88 99 104 108 126 128 132 144 149 192 193 206
  16. OK, re-reading all of kallend's posts in this thread gives me this sense of a 3-pronged approach to a "solution" to the problem (defining the problem as nutcases gaining access to guns): (1) Gun owner's should willfully turn in all their guns so that they are not being selfish in asserting their rights to the detriment of victims of gun crimes. (2) The sale of guns should be banned. (3) All right wing political speech should be banned as inciteful and hateful unless it is self-condemning. The simple fact that right-wing politicians have opposing views from the left is in itself proof that the RW'ers are nuts. No further mental evaluation necessary.
  17. So, seriously, who steps in and says this guy can't get a gun? At what point does "someone", by decree, make (or not make) that decision? A government "czar"? A club or other advocacy group (NRA, for example) to be charged with the responsibility to affirm or deny a person his rights? Wouldn't that simply create an entity that can be held liable and be sued if something goes bad? That's the only reason I can think of that an anti-gun advocate can have for the NRA to take control and "self-govern". How about arresting murderers (regardless of weapon) and tossing them in jail (after a fair trial, of course)?
  18. Lets see: John Kennedy assassination - gun Bobby Kennedy assassination -gun MLK assassination - gun Reagan assassination attempt - gun John Lennon - gun Columbine - gun VTech massacre - gun This mass murder and assassination attempt - gun Wow - anyone see a pattern that Kennedy can't fathom? All left-wing nut cases with the possible exception of 1, or maybe 2
  19. I think winsor was being intentionally absurd. But really the only solutions are (a) Ban and door-to-door confiscation. --Most effective. The only "solution" that will work. Direct assault on the 2nd Amendment. (b) Tax the everlovin' dogpoop out of everything that has to do with firearms. --Won't solve the "problem" but the gov't could use the money. This would likely be the remedy with the greatest chance of being implemented. End run around the 2nd Amendment. (c) Criminalize the the transfer of a gun to anyone who doesn't meet a certain arbitrary "profile". --Not enough room in the jails. Too much room for abuse and ultimate tyranny. This would eventually morph into only "carefully selected" (by who?) citizens may have a gun. Again, unconstitutional once a person is denied his rights because of someone else's arbitrary black-listing of him without due process. (d) Vigorously prosecute crimes involving firearms. --Makes the most sense but any incidents that occur would increase more calls to "do something" and create more political fodder to spread about. Also, charging that the wide range of social/economic conditions across the country would place one group more "at risk" for prosecution than another. (Not really his fault! His condition, and suppression by "the man" made him do it!) In other words, business as usual. (e) Another suggestion?
  20. and yours come over as intransigent. Do you have a better solution than the current one, an outright ban, or the future prediction method? Please. Let's work together to solve this problem. What could have been done? Banning guns altogether would be one solution. Then the righties would be forced to use bombs, booby traps and sabotage to induce political change ...you know, just like the lefties. As a plus, all of the work-a-day, regular, non-political gun-using criminals would be forced to switch to knives and blackjacks.
  21. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2009/07/16/2009-07-16_teen_brutally_stabbed_to_death_with_screwdriver.html . . . But he seemed fine until he stabbed the guy . . . There should be at least a three day waiting period on screwdrivers. But, but ...what if something needs screwing right now?!?
  22. Are you saying that the system we have in place now works? The system that we have in place today keeps people who have been adjudicated mentally defective or have been committed to a mental institution from possessing guns. . nice way to avoid the question. Cho, this event, and many others show that the "system" you so stoutly defend simply does NOT work. 6 dead just today. IMO the enablers who defend a clearly nonfunctioning system bear much of the blame. What changes do you think should be made to have a system that functions well (the goal being to keep guns out of the hands of nutcases ...however that is defined.)
