  1. So then.., you agree that an even trade doesn't produce taxable income. What about an even trade where I trade my time for it's value($40.00 per hour)? I haven't gained anything , i've simply made an even trade. My time for someone elses money. Has that even exchange produced taxable income? Peace, Jim B. DJ! ...Is that you!?!
  2. Now that was different but ...not folk! Yeah, I've heard some snippets of some excellent Christian musicians. But as far as "Gospel" goes I prefer more of a bluegrassy slant ...like Ralph Stanley, the Carters, etc. But here I'm more interested in the music and the "sound" rather than the song. ...same for folk.
  3. I remember that! Nice try! ...But that's more like "gospel" music ...not folk.

  6. Just kickin' back this morning doing some paperwork and listening to some good music and it dawned on me ....Why are there not any good folk songs for conservatives? What up w'dat? No one has ever thought to document the dog-eat-dog plight of conservs in acoustic music? My favorite music has always been traditional and folk music and I always find myself singing along with artists who write about "social injustices" and sticking it to (insert the conservative boogyman du jour here). Would it have been too much to ask for Woody to have written just one conservative folk song? This land is our land, too!

  10. Just to answer the question in the thread title (from the horses mouth): "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union, ..... ......I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free." ~ A. Lincoln, letter to Horace Greeley, Aug 22, 1862 Another quote somewhat relevant to the thread: “Human action can be modified to some extent, but human nature cannot be changed.” ~ A. Lincoln
  11. I have never driven a real world Late Model, Nationwide, Camper Truck or Sprint Car (and chances of me driving one of these in the real world is slim to nil). But thanks to www.iracing.com I have driven the virtual versions and one thing I did learn driving these cars in iRacing was going around in circles making only left hand turns was easy. But going around in circles making only left hand turns and being fast was not so easy. Oh and NASCAR may not rule supreme on ESPN anymore, but it is king of the hill on Speed TV. Of course Speed TV is owned by NASCAR. LOL I've never raced cars but I do have a lot of respect for the skills of all these guys and all classes of racing. But I did some powerboat racing years ago and sometimes you would find yourself making a (very) hard left turn even when you didn't want to.
  12. Yep! If you can't run with the big dogs get back on the porch PS: IIRC, a lot of snowbird BillyBobs were more than a little ticked off when they couldn't get their NASCAR fix on ESPN a couple of years ago .....eh? Edit to add: It might be fun to get a bag of popcorn and watch a few of these people who disparage NASCAR get into a 3400 lb. car and try to make a left turn at 190+ (that's 305+ kph for our northern friends). ...just sayin'
  13. Absolutely not. We can infer from previous polls that it's likely the overwhelming majority are. Exactly. Those who think this is "Republican vs. Democrat" are so overdosed with the standard news-network tenor of American discourse that they're missing the point. Maybe you could point that out to the Original Poster who quoted only the Republican results without question while lamenting the failure of the Civil War to completely wipe out these toothless, back-country rubes. But ...IMO, the whole purpose of this "poll" had nothing to do with interracial marriage per se. The purpose was to directly tie racism and intolerance to Repubs and more specifically to possible Republican presidential contenders. Again, speculating and IMO, the poll backfired when the results for the Dems bombed and now they are to be released "in the coming weeks" (never) with the hope that it will be forgotten. Or they could just lie. The problem with lying about those results is that another poll done by others might consistently show their BS and render even the Repub results as unbelievable. Better to just keep quiet and not publish uncomfortable results. The fact that the respondents are now labeled Repubs and "non-Repubs" is one clue. If the Democrat results were any less intolerant by even a little they would have published results for all demographic groups for comparison. Maybe we got the truth and nothing but the truth ....but we didn't get the whole truth.
  14. Thanks, all! Yeah, beer is on the short list. Also, I was planning to go out tonight and get a couple of beers to celebrate but I decided to stay in and watch PBS. (good grief! what the hell happened to me!?)
  15. Yeah, I only scanned a couple of the headlines but I could see where that was going.
  16. Oh ..don't misinterpret my response. I've not disputed, nor am I in a position to dispute any of the "facts" or results published by the group. I haven't even questioned their methodology or selection process. And I haven't commented specifically on the groups suspected ideological bias. I am only commenting on their omission of "facts" that would give the published "facts" some actual relevance with respect to the population at large. I am good with waiting for the results for the "Non-Repub" sample. Not gonna hold my breath, though. Call up FAUX NEWS... or the C of CC... they LIVE for shit like that... You're still pissed because I called you a conservative, aren't you? It really wasn't a PA ...no, really! (OK ..brainlock! WTF is C of CC?) Oh Gee now how do we solve this dilema Oh, OK ...kinda like the right-wing version of the Daily Kooks. Never heard of 'em. BTW- thanks for the google help.

  19. Quote..... And the poster who noticed how easy it was to put out the results for Republicans, and harder to do for the Democrats -- good catch, unless there are undisclosed extenuating circumstances (e.g. they only conducted the poll at Republican precincts). My guess is that the results for "non-Repubs" were equally embarrassing and the hope is that that poll will be forgotten over time ...but the so-called results that were published will hopefully be remembered. Also, what is this Republicans and "Non-Republicans" BS? The southern US had a long history of being Democratic, because in part Lincoln's party, and the party of Reconstruction, were Republicans. In the late 1970's and after, this overwhelming democrat-ness of the southern US began to fall, as people began to align via actual ideology, and not memory. There are still plenty of bigoted southern Democrat rednecks in these here parts ....and this is Florida! not "the South".
  20. "The firm also conducted a separate poll of non-Republican voters, asking them the same question about interracial marriage. Those results are expected to be released in the coming weeks,...." Maybe it will take a few weeks for PPP to figure out how to "spin" the "non-Repub" poll results to impart a result that will blow smoke up peoples' asses without being obvious. Or maybe they think everyone will have forgotten about the poll in a few weeks and only remember the GOP poll "results". Edit to add: It only took PPP 10 days to tally the GOP poll results and reach the stunning conclusion that they are a bunch of racist rednecks that are also supporters of Barbour, Gingrich, Huckabee and Palin. They made a special point of singling out Palin as a favorite of the Mississippi hick contingent. I'm sure it'll take weeks to figure out the nuances of the Dems answers and massage them to arrive at a result showing their superior, progressive attributes. Remains to be seen ...or more likely, not.
  21. Well, I would have a different opinion depending on whether this is a physics or math instructor. Physics is supposed to model reality to some extent. I would think the runner would hit top end waaayy before the 175 ft. mark (really in just a few feet), reducing the top end speed but maintaining it for longer. The 9.7 in itself is not unrealistic for a 325 ft. sprint.
  22. Although I'm getting an uneasy feeling that I'm missing something in the first leg I just assigned the average speed there as half of the top speed since we're assuming the acceleration from 0 to top speed is a straight line. so 175/(9.7-t) fps for the 1st leg = 150/2t fps for the 2nd leg. That gives t=2.91 sec for the 2nd leg. FWIW - I think the world record for the 100 yd dash is still 9.0 flat held by Ivory Crocket since the 70's. He was supposed to do a demo shortly after he set that record at a local high school but he was not able to do it because of an injury or illness. The club (Chicago Track Club, IIRC) substituted 3 other runners for the demo and I never saw anyone run that fast. I was sure they broke the record. Their times were 9.3, 9.4 and 9.4. I can only imagine what 9 flat looks like!
  23. Yesterday, my post to the "goat" thread included the number "389". About 6:30 this evening at the grocery store I bought "Cash 3" Quick Pick ticket (numbers picked by the computer) and the number came out "389". I thought to myself, "What a coincidence!" A couple of hours later, after the numbers were drawn I checked the draw results for this evening and the numbers "389" hit for $500. Like I said, WOOHOO!
  24. Is this a cheetah? I'm getting 6.79 sec to the 175 mark and a top end of just over 35mph. (assuming constant acceleration from 0 to top speed in the first segment.)
  25. Thanks for bringing back nightmares of FORTRAN. ...which led to more about COBOL. And then came IBM ...which led to keypunching. ...after all those years thinking I had successfully obliterated all that from memory. Thanks, dude. Ah! Yes! FORTRAN IV...I remember standing in line with my stack of cards at 2am patiently waiting my turn at the IBM 1130. The operator would neatly place my cards in the reader and then ....the dreaded "Syntax error line 278"! Then, dejected, trek back to the dorm to fix line 278 and go through the rest of the cards to try to find any other errors. Reschedule another time slot, maybe days later. Repeat.
