  1. The specs would be set by the producer of the fabric would be my guess. I'd be really surprised if there was something in the TSO or fabric mfg spec that described what an acceptable level of porosity is before a canopy should be removed from service. Even if there is, if the manual does not point you to this spec, then I contend it is meaningless for the purpose of this discussion. The manual has no procedure, no acceptance criteria, so the rigger can proceed with their own judgement on what to do. Some will choose to send it to the factory, most will do a lot less. 2. How is the procedure and acceptance criteria specified by the requirement in the manual to do a porosity check? 3. Ya, the earth has been handling changes in solar output, with big changes in the climate of the earth! Can anyone estimate the effect of the Kyoto agreement if it had been adopted? Just saying it would have helped has no meaning. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 4. If the Kyoto agreement had been accepted by the US and others, and implemented, what do you think would have been the effect? How much would it have helped? If only the Kyoto treaty was able to control the variations in the sun and volcanic eruptions... 5. Your question sounds simple, but is related to much more complicated and important scenarios that are related depending on whether the PC has come out or not. Since you are wondering about what to do if the PC is not out at all, you really should also cover the PC in tow and horseshoe scenario with your instructors in detail. 6. No, the rigger is not the authority to set the spec. The porosity spec. is by the mfg. only !!! based on the mfg. tests. the no. might NOT be the same for all mfg. Safe Rigging !!! So where does the mfg set the spec? If you have the equipment, what is the procedure and acceptance criteria? It seems that perhaps the requirement to check porosity can be taken to be a general instruction to check the condition of the fabric. Why isn't the good judgement of a licensed rigger after trying to breath through the fabric enough per their instruction. If the manual said check porosity per ASTM test D-1234.5 or send back to the factory for testing, or whatever, then of course the spec is set, but you seem to be extending the meaning of their instruction to mean more than what is stated. You guys know more about this stuff than me of course, but it wouldn't be the first time that an official interpretation by regulatory authorities was needed because of the vagueness of a mfg instruction. 7. I think the fact that Bush was so involved with baseball does make a difference, and I thought he did well. Can you imagine the public relations benefit if he could actually take a few pitches during batting practice and do well at that! It would be much more effective than holding/kissing babies. 8. Quite right. The only time I'm sure nothing terribly stupid has happened like leaving temp pins or molar straps is when I've watched the repack. When those 'witnessed' repacks were due 4 months later, I would have been very happy to just pay something to the same rigger to pencil pack his own job. 9. If the manual says to check the porosity, without specifying how, isn't the rigger left with complete discretion to do so in any way they see fit according to their own judgment as licensed riggers? I think that it is reasonable to assert that the language was left intentionally vague by the mfg. I think it unreasonable to assert that the wording of the manual requires a formal test of the porosity with an expensive and not widely available machine. 10. I just saw today's pitch. It was a lob, certainly, but the way you make it sound, I would have thought it bounced to the catcher like one that Clinton did. You got nothing. 11. Getting a repack can certainly find previous screw-ups, but because screw ups can happen at every repack, how are you better by doing it more often? 12. Kerry's eyes were closed! Bush also threw a first pitch at a world series game, can't remember if it was last year or earlier, and it was a perfect strike thrown all the way from the mound. The catcher didn't even have to move his glove. So, from what I've seen, the count is 1 ball, 1 strike. 13. These kind of stories remind me why I really don't want to have a high performance car. They are just too much fun to drive, and I admit that I find it hard to resist driving such cars aggressively. Of course not all crashes are due to this, but I think it is wise to eliminate that cause by choosing a vehicle that doesn't tempt me. Much better to get our thrills in the air than on the road. 15. Cloudy? You messed up. I made the first 2 loads and left before 3PM. They would have started earlier if more people were out there earlier. I couldn't stay for the next load. 17. Don't expect weather sympathy from much of the rest of the country. To change the subject...do you think you'll ever get 767 tankers. When I left Boeing in '95 they were going to make an internally funded prototype. Sad that the stupid scandals spoiled something so vital to replace the hundreds of old KC135s. The 767 is only being made at the rate of one per month, they will close the production line before too long if the tanker situation doesn't get straightened out. 18. Your container probably has some coded letter/number combination of some kind that indicates the main/reserve size. Look on the container info label, and then you can go to the owners manual, maybe available online if you don't have it, to confirm what it says should fit. It would also help to know if you think the container is loose or tight now with your current canopy. The pack volume numbers can be very misleading, different methods used to measure, identical canopies can vary, and each time a canopy is measured it can be different. 19. In my opinion, the other popular location, on the backpad, is even less accessible. You would still have to take your rig off, and it is harder for another jumper to get to it. The other disadvantage of the backpad location is the extra abuse it gets, always against the floor. 20. There is some good logic to using a non-wing/drag only type of reserve for CRW, especially if it uses a free bag. If you can't get rid of entangled canopies, you don't have to worry about inducing a down plane with a round reserve. 23. So, now the govt is able to get a building to fall faster than it normally would when collapsing. That is a neat trick, if it actually had happened. 25. The diagrams on page 49 of the April mag show a "line of fly trajectory" that is wrong. It shows a trajectory about 30 degrees to the horizontal. This means their horizontal speed is much greater than their vertical speed. No way. The trajectory line is aligned with their body, which is not going to be their true trajectory through the sky. The diagram itself contradicts the trajectory path by including a "no fly zone" because of burble considerations. The guy that is X'd out (in the no fly zone) would cause no problems if his trajectory was along the line shown, but even the article mentions that you have to watch out for causing a burble above you. The pic on page 51 shows a group that seems to be flying at only a very slight angle to the horizontal. The top of the clouds and the color shift of the sky give reliable indication of the horizontal, I think.
