  1. Do your instructors have a vested interest in selling a smaller canopy? I've known instructors who are morons. When I witness someone who makes a mistake while landing I often ask them if they wish they had a smaller canopy. You can imagine the responses but none have ever said yes. Larger lower-wing-loaded canopies (in general) will always be more forgiving than smaller heavier loaded ones. We all make mistakes while under canopy even those of us with thousands of jumps. Until you have the experience to deal with those mistakes it's wise to have a parachute that is more forgiving of the mistakes. I can name at least 6 people in the last couple of years who no longer jump because they made mistakes while landing. In all of these cases a larger - slower - more docile canopy would have given them the added margin of error so that they would likely have gotten up bruised, scraped and embarassed instead of the hospital trip that ended their skydiving. It's your body. Do what you think is right. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

  3. I also find it useful to have a back up switch so I can just plug and go. In fact I keep one rolled up inside the lining at the top of my helmet. For some reason when one goes bad it's often while I'm in the plane. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

  5. Just as NW Flyer said, Dont' wear your helmet until you're on jump run and don't close the lens until you're near the door for exit. Let the heat and moisture escape from your head during the climb to altitude. I've been doing it this way for 15 years and it works. I jump in the Midwest ( Iowa - Illinois ) 90-100 degrees and 60-80 percent humidity. My hair is always wet from sweat when I get in the plane. I am also reposting something (below) I posted a few weeks ago. ************************* I've been jumping full face helmets since they first came out. I definitely like them but I will only wear one with a flip up visor now. There is no doubt (to me) that the G3 is the best choice out there (obviously others will disagree). There is no loss of peripheral vision and with the new lens they started using recently the fogging issue is mostly gone. I still use an anti fog wipe from Fogtech which has completely illiminated the fogging. I jump in the Midwest of the US and I don't think anyone get's a worse combination of temps and humidity than we. One Fogtech wipe usually lasts me about 25-30 jumps. As stated up thread - add new distractions incrimentally and spend lots of time on the ground becoming totally familiar with the new piece of gear to the point you can operate it with out thought.   10. When I sell a Vector I always suggest that the buyer have the rig rsl ready even if they choose not to use it (mainly for resale). Last fall a customer ordered one and did not want the rig rsl ready. If he ever wants to sell it and the new buyer wants to have an rsl then someone will have to pay to have it retrofitted. They are normally standard equipment for no charge. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  11. Since the poster has not responded to our request for his list of countries I decided to check it out myself. I just got off the phone with Vigil USA. The only country that has not approved the Vigil for use is Norway. AAD which makes the Vigil has been working with the federation that controls skydiving in that country to get the Vigil approved but the process is quite long and arduous. The only people who can not use the Vigil are residents of Norway. Visiting jumpers are allowed to use the Vigil. So if you live somewhere other than Norway you can jump and travel with your Vigil world wide. So there you have it; another mis-statement clearified.   13. Or you can get in the habit of opening your visor at a higher altitude. Some visors are easier to open than others. Personally I have found that the ones which are easier to open are more likely to open up when you don’t want them to. I don't want my visor to open up before I'm ready so I prefer something that may a bit tougher to open under canopy (two hands instead of one) but is much less likely to open prematurely. Because I use the Fogtech wipes my visor does not fog up so I do not have to be in a hurry to open my visor. Instead I clear my airspace of other canopies before I do my house cleaning; open visor, collapse and stow my slider, expand my chest strap etc. I use a flip up visor because I do not like to have anything in front of my eyes while flying my canopy including goggles and sun glasses. Most goggles distort your vision to some degree. Most people who use a flip up visor will open it fairly soon after canopy opening and certainly not wait until in they are in the pattern. Otherwise what's the point of a flip up? Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  14. I'm once again looking forward to this boogie. I will be organizing horizontal FS again this year and over this past winter have been designing some very challenging 10 way dives.   17. This elderly jumper just filmed 18 tandems over the weekend packing my own rig (Katana @1:1.75). Yeah Baby! I would have chimed in sooner but I've been busy doing out door stuff. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  18. To be clear I think it's important to know what type of aircraft on which these events happened. Most Otters - Pacs - and King Airs do not seal up enough to hold the pressure inside the plane. The doors also do not just pop open. They usually require two people to slide the the door open or at least someone in the optimal position to do so. In a thread from 2010 someone named Bill posted that a door opened suddenly but when asked to clearify on what airplane this happend there was no further response. I could be wrong but common sense says that for a door to suddenly pop open it probably has to be a Cessna with a flip up under-the-wing door. One which has a tight enough seal to hold in some internal pressure which when suddenly released will cause a sudden and rapid change in pressure. I jump this type of plane quite often and I sit by the door a lot. In every one of these planes there is a back rest and/or you sit with your back to the firewall. There is never a good time for an AAD to fire in the plane but if mine were to fire while sitting by one of our doors, the possibility of my pilot chute even getting away from my container much less out the door is nil. This is no reason to loose situational awareness, just my thoughts. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

  20. I too switch my AAD on each morning just prior to the first jump. I also do a reserve pin check prior to each jump and I look at the AAD to be sure it is still in working mode before each jump. If I ever don't remember turning the unit on, I cycle it off and back on. This takes just less than 30 seconds. Seems fairly simple to me. Know your gear or don't jump it. I pin checked a guy at a recent boogie who's RSL was hooked to the reserve cable housing. I asked if that was on purpose. He told me no and that he was jumping a rental rig. He was a fairly new jumper and had already made one jump in that configuration. Needless to say he was a bit shocked. We had a nice conversation about knowing your gear.
