  4. I suppose it is possible, but I'd guess it's more likely he pushed it in himself while checking his PC before getting in the door after being checked ("oh, that seems a bit far out, let me tuck it in") or he wasn't actually checked in the plane.

  7. Yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean ride a mal to your hard deck. I'm of the opinion that you try things twice (if you're above your deck) and if it doesn't clear get rid of it. Depending on the canopy and wingloading I may not even get that far with a spinning mal, I don't want to get to the point of cutting away only to find myself starting to get g-locked.

  9. In order to responsibly use this data to draw conclusions we really should qualify whether the collision occurred between members of the same group or between members of separate groups. ETA: Also, are those canopy collisions, freefall collisions, or both?
  10. It's incorrect either way. While tracking up or down jump run is the easiest way to get into someone's canopy, it's not unheard of to have people sliding (particularly backsliding) close to the next group. You can get backsliding pretty quickly, especially if it's a less experienced jumper(s) who may not necessarily have the best awareness of where they're at in the sky. I'm sure it's a similar case for folks learning to freefly, which is why they'll usually be advised to face perpendicular to jump run when trying out something new.

  13. I wouldn't think it really matters, provided you meet the other requirements you cut out: It is an interesting question though.
  14. I think that's backwards. Remember that you're pushing your handles down, so moving the handles up to shoulder level is going to make it a two stage process. First stage is going to be almost all triceps to move your lower arm into a strong second stage pushing position. Either that or you're going to have to do some weird arm rotation to clear your handles. Either way, I'm going to get a far stronger & faster (the important one) push down with the handles where they are currently. Not to mention a handle up on the shoulder like that is going to be super easy to snag on things.
  15. Not really. The reason you see errors as you shift it around the body is because you're shifting it between different pressure regions in the wake. If you keep the location of the sensor consistent (like a belly or equipment pouch), you won't see these errors. It's not going to be the perfect results you'd get from video telemetry or LIDAR systems (both expensive to get time with), but in my experience there is reasonable agreement in the data. Though I wouldn't use it as a primary source, GPS altitude can also be used as a sanity check, the altitudes may not be consistent due to the sensor calibration, but the deltas should be.
  16. Opening times can be determined using a pressure altimeter and video to corroborate. This is done routinely and is not a difficult problem. The difficult problem, as yourself and others have already pointed out, is defining a reasonable scope for the study.

  20. Ok, my bad. If the reason you have for not spiraling during a skydive above the briefed cutoff altitude is because you think your AAD will fire, you don't understand your equipment.
